  • Carbon nitride has drawn broad interdisciplinary attention in diverse fields such as catalyst, energy storage, gas adsorption, biomedical sensing and even imaging. Intensive studies on carbon dioxide (CO2) capture using carbon nitride materials with various nanostructures have been reported since it is needed to actively remove CO2 from the atmosphere against climate change. This is mainly due to its tunable structural features, excellent physicochemical properties, and basic surface functionalities based on the presence of a large number of -NH or -NH2 groups so that the nanostructured carbon nitrides are considered as suitable materials for CO2 capture for future utilization as well. In this review, we summarize and highlight the recent progress in synthesis strategies of carbon nitride nanomaterials. Their superior CO2 adsorption capabilities are also discussed with the structural and textural features. An outlook on possible further advances in carbon nitride is also included.

  • This study examined the efficacy of various chlorinating agents in partitioning light water reactor spent fuel, with the aim of optimizing the chlorination process. Through thermodynamic equilibrium calculations, we assessed the outcomes of employing MgCl2, NH4Cl, and Cl2 as chlorinating agents. A comparison was drawn between using a single agent and a sequential approach involving all three agents (MgCl2, NH4Cl, and Cl2). Following heat treatment, the utilization of MgCl2 as the sole chlorinating agent resulted in a moderate separation. Specifically, this method yielded a solid separation with 96.9% mass retention, 31.7% radioactivity, and 44.2% decay heat, relative to the initial spent fuel. In contrast, the sequential application of the chlorinating agents following heat treatment led to a final solid separation characterized by 93.1% mass retention, 5.1% radioactivity, and 15.4% decay heat, relative to the original spent fuel. The findings underscore the potential effectiveness of a sequential chlorination strategy for partitioning spent fuel. This approach holds promise as a standalone technique or as a complementary process alongside other partitioning processes such as pyroprocessing. Overall, our findings contribute to the advancement of spent fuel management strategies.

  • In footwear manufacturing systems, the upper parts of the shoes are manually sewed on a sub-line while bottom parts are produced by machines such as injection and molding machines on a sub-line before these two parts are combined into complete shoes on a final assembly line. The manual operations for the upper parts lead to a large variability in processing times, resulting in higher work-in-process inventory. In most footwear industries, production lines have been controlled by MRP-based push systems. Some industries attempt to introduce Kanban-based pull systems. This paper identifies the characteristics of the footwear manufacturing processes, and discusses the problems of the current control systems. As an operational alternative, a CONWIP-based control strategy is presented. Simulation experiments are performed to examine the performance of the control strategies.

  • This work focuses on current sharing between punch-through insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) connected in parallel and evaluates the mechanisms that allow overall current balancing. Two different control strategies are presented. These strategies are based on the modification of transistor gate-emitter control voltage VGE by using an active gate driver circuit. The first strategy relies on the calculation of the average value of the current flowing through all parallel-connected IGBTs. The second strategy is proposed by the authors on the basis of a current cross reference control scheme. Finally, the simulation and experimental results of the application of the two current sharing control algorithms are presented.

  • Silicon-based materials are one of the most promising anode active materials in lithium-ion battery. A carbon layer decorated on the surface of silicon particles efficiently suppresses the large volume expansion of silicon and improves electrical conductivity. Carbon coating through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is one of the most effective strategies to synthesize carbon- coated silicon materials suitable for mass production. Herein, we synthesized carbon coated SiOx via pilot scale CVD reactor (P-SiOx@C) and carbon coated SiOx via industrial scale CVD reactor (I-SiOx@C) to identify physical characteristic changes according to the CVD capacity. Reduced size silicon domains and local non-uniform carbon coating layer were detected in I-SiOx@C due to non-uniform temperature distribution in the industrial scale CVD reactor with large capacity, resulting in increased surface area due to severe electrolyte consumption.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify whether there is a mediating effect of self-efficacy in the relationship between self-leadership and organizational commitment, self-leadership and job satisfaction. Specifically, hypotheses were established and a research model was established that behavior-focused strategies, natural reward strategies, and constructive thought pattern strategies have a significant positive (+) effect on organizational commitment, self-efficacy among these variables. In order to analyze this, 239 copies of survey data were collected from general domestic companies and analyzed through SPSS 25.0. The mediating analysis was conducted in the manner proposed by Baron & Kenny(1986). As a result, among the sub-factors of self-leadership, behavior-focused strategies and natural reward strategies had a significant positive (+) effect on organizational commitment, but constructive thought pattern strategies had no causal relationship with organizational commitment. In addition, in the relationship between these variables, self-efficacy showed a partial mediating effect. On the other hand, in the relationship between self-leadership and job satisfaction, only the natural reward strategies among the sub-factors of self-leadership showed a significant positive (+) effect, and behavior-focused strategies and constructive thought pattern strategies showed no causal relationship. Among these variables, self-efficacy was found to show partial mediation. Details and implications of the analysis results were dealt with in the conclusions and discussions of the study.

  • This study analyzed characteristics of ozone (O3) formation regimes in Busan over a period of recent five years (2015~2019) and compared the findings with those obtained in Seoul. We employed four observed variations: early morning commuting-hour (i.e., 06:00-09:00 LST) nitrogen dioxide (NO2), peak-hour (i.e., 12:00-16:00 LST) O3, 8-hour average O3 (MDA8 O3), and △O3 (=O3_max- O3_min) in Busan and Seoul. In addition, the NO2-O3 relation was assessed to interpret which of NOx-limited or volatile organic compound (VOC)-limited was dominant. In Busan, the annual mean O3 concentration was relatively higher than in Seoul, whereas there were fewer high-concentration days. The Pearson correlation coefficients (R) between Early morning-hour NO2 and the Peak-hour O3 was positive (but close to zero) in Busan and negative in Seoul. Likewise, the R between the Early morning-hour NO2 and the △O3 showed a relatively considerable positive correlation (R=+0.4~0.5)(R=+0.4~0.5) in Busan, while a weak positive correlation (R=+0.1~0.2) in Seoul. From this result, it can be inferred that the O3 formation regime in Busan was intrepreted to be nearly neutral or relatively closer to the NOx-limited regime than Seoul, while Seoul to the VOC-limited regime. The study findings imply that O3 control strategies should be applied differently in Busan and Seoul. The results here were inferred from surface NO2 and O3 observations, and the varification studies based on in-situ VOCs measurements would be needed.

  • Korea is currently developing country-specific emission factors to support the 2050 zero-carbon campaign. Dairy cattle represent one of the largest livestock industries in Korea, and the industry is estimated to continue increasing because of an increase in milk demand. However, country-specific emission factors for dairy cattle are currently only available for calculating methane (CH4) emissions from enteric fermentation. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate CH4 and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes from sawdust-bedded barn in dairy cow and steer, as well as dairy cattle manure composting lots. The greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes were quantified using the open-chamber method and gas chromatography. CH4 fluxes from steer, dairy cow, and manure compost were 27.88 ± 5.84, 36.12 ± 10.85, and 259.44 ± 61.78 ㎍/head/s, respectively. N2O fluxes from steer, dairy cow, and manure compost were 14.04 ± 1.27, 4.11 ± 1.57, and 3.97 ± 1.08 ㎍/head/s, respectively. The result of this study can be used to construct country-specific data for GHG emissions from manure management. Thus, the application of mitigation strategies can be prioritized based on the GHG profile and targeted source.
