Low-density silica gel monolith was synthesized at ambient pressure by surface modification with TMCS and sub-sequent heat treatment. The mechanical thermal and optical properties of gel were studied. Compressive strength and modulus of compression of 350$^{\circ}C$-heated gel with the density of 0.24g/cm3 were 250kPa and 0.2MPa respectively. The thermal conductivity of silica gels synthesized at ambient pressure exhibited 0.02 W/m$.$K for the density of 0.24g/cm3 which is similar to that of the gel via supercritical drying and their main thermal transfer mechanism is considered to be solid and radiation conduction at room temperature. Ambient-dried silica gels were transparent blue showing about 60% of transmittance in the wavelength of 1500-2100nm and typical absorption bands of existing bonds under heat treatment at 350$^{\circ}C$. Medium scale monolity(${\Phi}$=50mm) at ambient pressure could be successfully prepared through total 5-month process period.
Ion beam processing is one of the key technologies to realize mastless and resistless sub 50nm nano fabrication. Unwanted effects, however, may occur since an energetic ion can interact with a target surface in various ways. Depending on the ion energy, the interaction can be swelling, deposition, sputtering, re-deposition, implantation, damage, backscattering and nuclear reaction. Sputtering is the fundamental mechanisms in ion beam induced direct patterning. Re-deposition and backscattering are unwanted mechanisms to avoid. Therefore understanding of ion beam-solid interaction should be advanced for further ion beam related research. In this paper we simulate some important interaction mechanisms between energetic incident ions and solid surfaces and the results are compared with experimental data. The simulation results are agreed well with experimental data.
$Ho^{3+}/Yb^{3+}/Tm^{3+}$ tri-doped $NaY_{1-x}(WO_4)_2$ phosphors with proper doping concentrations of $Ho^{3+}$, $Yb^{3+}$ and $Tm^{3+}$ ($x=Ho^{3+}+Yb^{3+}+Tm^{3+}$, $Ho^{3+}$=0.04, 0.03, 0.02, 0.01, $Yb^{3+}$=0.35, 0.40, 0.45, 0.50 and $Tm^{3+}$=0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04) were successfully synthesized via the microwave sol-gel route, and their upconversion properties were investigated. Well-crystallized microcrystalline particles showed fine and homogeneous microcrystalline morphology with particle sizes of $1-2{\mu}m$. The optical properties were comparatively examined using photoluminescence emission and Raman spectroscopy. Under excitation at 980 nm, the doped particles exhibited white emissions based on blue, green and red emission bands, which correspond to the $^1G_4{\rightarrow}^3H_6$ transitions of $Tm^{3+}$ in the blue region, the $^5S_2/^5F_4{\rightarrow}^5I_8$ transitions of $Ho^{3+}$ in the green region, the $^5F_5{\rightarrow}^5I_8$ transitions of $Ho^{3+}$, and the $^1G_4{\rightarrow}^3F_4$ and $^3H_4{\rightarrow}^3H_6$ transitions of $Tm^{3+}$ in the red region. The pump power dependence of the upconversion emission intensity and the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates of the phosphors were evaluated in detail.
Characterization and in vitro inhibition studies of protease inhibitor from the mushroom Pleurotus floridanus (PfTI) towards the pest Papilio demoleus is studied. The addition of 1 mM Mn2+, Na2+, Ba2+ and Ni 2+ enhanced the PfTI activity. The ICP-atomic emission spectrum showed the presence of Ca2+, Mg2+ and Zn2+ in the PfTI. Surfactants SDS and CTAB at a concentration of 1% reduced the PfTI activity whereas, the nonionic detergents Triton X and Tween 80 increased the activity. The inhibitory activity gradually decreased with increase in concentration of DMSO and H2O2. The activity was increased by dithiothreitol up to a concentration of 80 μM and inactivated at 140 μM. The activity of PMSF modified PfTI was drastically reduced to 0.234 U/mL at 4 mM concentration and similar results were obtained for modification of cysteine by N-Ethylmaleimide at slightly higher concentrations. The complex of trypsin and PfTI showed complete loss in fluorescence intensity at 343 nm compared with control. In vitro inhibition studies of PfTI with midgut proteases isolated from citrus pest P. demoleus with protease activity of 1.236 U was decreased to 0.613 U by 50 μL (0.1 mg/mL) of the inhibitor. Inhibitor was stable up to 0.04 M concentration of HCl.

Fe-based oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) powders were produced by high energy ball milling, followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) for consolidation. The mixed powders of 84Fe-14Cr-$2Y_2O_3$ (wt%) were mechanically milled for 10 and 90 mins, and then consolidated at different temperatures ($900{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$). Mechanically-Alloyed (MAed) particles were examined by means of cross-sectional images using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Both mechanical alloying and sintering behavior was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). To confirm the thermal behavior of $Y_2O_3$, a replica method was applied after the SPS process. From the SEM observation, MAed powders milled for 10 min showed a lamella structure consisting of rich regions of Fe and Cr, while both regions were fully alloyed after 90 min. The results of sintering behavior clearly indicate that as the SPS temperature increased, micro-sized defects decreased and the density of consolidated ODS alloys increased. TEM images revealed that precipitates smaller than 50 nm consisted of $YCrO_3$.

The Zn1-xMnxO ($0.00{\leq}x{\leq}0.06$) samples have been synthesized in the form of powder by the coprecipitation method at low temperature using $Zn(CH_3COO)_2$. $2H_2O$ and $Mn(CH_3COO)_2$. $4H_2O$ powders, as well as HCl and $NH_4OH$ solutions as starting materials. Characterization was conducted using XRD, TEM, XRF, FTIR and VSM. The result shows that the $Zn_{(1-x)}Mn_xO$ ($0.00{\leq}x{\leq}0.06$) nanoparticles have the wurtzite phase with a hexagonal structure and particle sizes ranging from 17.48 to 118.83 nm. In a qualitative analysis of XRF, the peaks that confirm the existence of the manganese element in Mn-doped ZnO samples were observed. Meanwhile, FTIR test result shows that there are peaks at around $500cm^{-1}$ and $400cm^{-1}$ in the FTIR spectra for Mn doped ZnO samples which clearly reveal the existence of the (Zn, Mn)-O strain mode. The (Zn, Mn)-O absorption peak positions have shifted to a lower wave number with increasing Mn doping content. The peak intensity is also lower if compared to that of the ZnO sample without doping. From the VSM test, it is shown that $Zn_{(1-x)}Mn_xO$ ($0.00{\leq}x{\leq}0.06$) nanoparticles are all paramagnetic having monotonically increased susceptibility as increasing Mn content.
Surface alloying using TiC, $TiB_2$ and VC ceramic particles on carbon steel has been performed using high voltage electron beam. Each type of ceramic particles was mixed with flux of Al and $MgF_2$ in 1 to 4 ratio. The microstructures of the surface alloyed layers consisted of melted region, interface region. heat affected region and the unaffected matrix. The surface layer of the TiC surface alloyed had a cubed primary and a eutectic type of TiC. $TiB_2$ in surface layer of $TiB_2$ surface alloyed were incompletely melted with$ TiB_2$ particles as observed before the alloying. On the surface layer of the VC surface alloyed, very well defined cell structure was observed with VC on the cell boundary. In addition, ~50 nm in diameter VC particles in high density were ubiquitous in the matrix. Those fine VC particles prominently improved the hardness and wear resistance of the surface layer of the VC surface alloyed.
$TiO_2$ thin films for high energy density capacitors were prepared by r.f. magnetron sputtering at room temperature. Flexible PET (Polyethylene terephtalate) substrate was used to maintain the structure of the commercial film capacitors. The effects of deposition pressure on the crystallization and electrical properties of $TiO_2$ films were investigated. The crystal structure of $TiO_2$ films deposited on PET substrate at room temperature was unrelated to deposition pressure and showed an amorphous structure unlike that of films on Si substrate. The grain size and surface roughness of films decreased with increasing deposition pressure due to the difference of mean free path. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed the formation of chemically stable $TiO_2$ films. The dielectric constant of $TiO_2$ films was significantly changed with deposition pressure. $TiO_2$ films deposited at low pressure showed high dissipation factor due to the surface microstructure. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor of films deposited at 70 mTorr were found to be 100~120 and 0.83 at 1 kHz, respectively. The temperature dependence of the capacitance of $TiO_2$ films showed the properties of class I ceramic capacitors. $TiO_2$ films deposited at 10~30 mTorr showed dielectric breakdown at applied voltage of 7 V. However, the films of 500~300 nm thickness deposited at 50 and 70 mTorr showed a leakage current of ${\sim}10^{-8}{\sim}10^{-9}$ A at 100 V.
We studied InP etching in high density planar inductively coupled $BCl_3$and $BCl_3$/Ar plasmas(PICP). The investigated process parameters were PICP source power, RIE chuck power, chamber pressure and $BCl_3$/Ar gas composition. It was found that increase of PICP source power and RIE chuck power increased etch rate of InP, while that of chamber pressure decreased etch rate. Etched InP surface was clean and smooth (RMS roughness <2 nm) with a moderate etch rate (300-500 $\AA$/min) after the planar $BCl_3$/Ar ICP etching. It may make it possible to open a new regime of InP etching with $CH_4$$H_2$-free plasma chemistry. Some amount of Ar addition (<50%) also improved etch rates of InP, while too much Ar addition reduced etch rates of InP.
