Purpose: This study was done to provide information on issues of nursing core competencies needed in the fields of nursing practice for graduates in nursing, from the perspective of nursing managers, and to make suggestion for improving nursing education programs. Methods: Ten nursing managers participated in this study. They were in charge of clinical nursing education in the fields of nursing practice. Data were collected using focus group interviews and analyzed with the content analysis methodology of Downe - Wamboldt's. Results: Six types of nursing core competency - therapeutic nursing competency, professional nursing competency, administrative nursing competency, humanistic nursing competency, relational nursing competency, and personal nursing competency - were identified as nursing core competencies needed in the fields of nursing practice for graduates in nursing. Conclusion: Results of the study show important evidence for decision-making about nursing curriculum revision based on nursing core competency, both in the classroom and in nursing practice areas. These results should contribute to the development of evaluation indicators for nursing students or new nurses. Further research is required to measure degree of nursing core competency in graduates of nursing and to identify the effect of competency-based education for improving nursing core competency.

The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between the reading circle management with college students and the participation program in the reading camp. The results show that the participation program in reading camp helps the activation on reading circle. The college students'activity on reading camp increases reading activity because students can work with the graduates and get the graduates'reading activity experience. Also, the activity on reading camp encourages reading circle members to work so that they continue their activity after graduation. Students on reading circle usually work hard during semester but during closing of college, they seldom work. The participation program in reading camp, however, can bridge over the gap during the vacation.
Objectives: This study compared the number of graduates in each region for the past 6 years and the number of dental hygienists working in dental clinics by region to evaluate the trend of dental hygienists moving to work areas after graduation. Methods: Health care big data open system_medical manpower statistics, resident population and household status data by year, and education statistics service were used to calculate the number of dentists and dental hygienists, admission status by region, number of dental hygienists per 100,000 population, number of dental hygienists per number of dentists, and distribution of dental hygienists by region. Results: Although the number of active dental hygienists increased in the metropolitan area, the ratio of dental hygienists to dentists did not improve significantly. In addition, the number of students enrolled in provincial universities decreased, and there were fewer active dental hygienists than graduates in provincial areas. Conclusions: Although the number of active dental hygienists increased due to increase in the number of dental hygiene departments, it was found that rural areas did not have a significant impact on the availability of dental hygienists as the graduates moved to the metropolitan area.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the necessity for the extension of education and the desirable educational period of department of food and nutrition in junior college. Questionnaire was answered by the students, professors, dietitians, and the graduates. The result is summarized as follows: 52.1% of the subjects recognized that 2 year-period of education is too short, and professor group felt significantly shorter than any other groups. Both groups of professors(45.7%) and dietitians(43.5%) had more significantly recognized the necessity for the extended period of education than the groups of students(23.0%) and the graduates(21.5%) As the causes of the necessity for the extended period of education, 48.6% of the subjects answered 2 year-period of education is too short to study and practice on the major, and professor group highly recognized that the students need more time to study and practice for the major than time to prepare for the dietitian's certificates(p<0.001). Both Groups of professors(77.8%) and the graduates(65.1%) had significantly higher answer than groups of dietitians(56.1%) and the students(56.5%) to the question that 3 year-period of education is proper(p<0.001). Therefore the educational system should be reorganized into the three year-period of education as soon as possible for the effectiveness of the education of the dietitians, for the higher acquisition of dietitian's certificate, for the increase of field education, for the development of the student's creativeness and for the various courses after the graduation.
Background : This study aims to examine actual conditions of college students' life, behaviors to prepare for employment, and employment performance, thereby providing basic materials to create efficient measures for college students' employment strategies. Method : The subjects of this study were 207 graduates from the Department of Physical Therapy employed in medical and health institutions in Gyeongsangnam-do and Busan. Aquestionnaire devised by Yu Yeon-wha and Lim Gyeong-ae(2012, 2011) was revised and complemented into a self-reporting questionnaire composed of 29 questions. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS Win 18.00 program. Results : 1) The biggest reason for the respondents' selecting physical therapy as a major was bright prospect for employment, and the largest percent of the respondents answered that they started to prepare for employment in the second semester of junior year. 2)Regarding behaviors to prepare for employment, those who largely provided information on employment were the respondents' seniors and friends. 62.3% of the respondents owned certificates and diplomas. 59.9% took part in programs related to employment in order to prepare for employment. Their weakest area was English and what they wanted to know most was annual salaries provided by companies. They put self-development and growth potential before everything as what should be considered in priority when getting a job. 3)The most frequently asked question in their interviews for employment was the motive for application. The biggest reason for their employment at their current institution was their good personality and manner. 4)As for employment performance, they were unsatisfied with their current average annual salary. Conclusion : School should provide consciousness education and employment coaching so that students can early prepare for employment with an active attitude. In particular, educational environment where many students can gain easy access to information about employment in diverse areas should be provided and student coaching should be actively conducted.
In order to enhance basic competencies for freshmen at engineering college, whose learning ability is gradually declining, a new course was developed to review basic mathematics and physics through a process of collecting opinions from fellow professors. Tests in six fields of math and physics with the same problems showed the correct answer rate rose from 24.8% at the beginning of the semester to 59.0% at the end of the semester after operating the course developed. According to the survey, the students' self-evaluated confidence on the basic competencies in 16 fields of math and physics showed a significant increase. Students with high confidence in basic competencies also received high actual grades. General high school graduates' confidence point in basic competencies improved from 54.7 at the beginning to 75.3 points at the end of the semester, while specialized high school graduates' enhanced from 38.3 to 64.0 which is higher than that of general high school graduates at the beginning of the semester.
This study investigated various attributes that contributed to successful employment in order to develop employment support programs, especially for female engineering students. We surveyed engineering students who graduated between 2006 and 2011. The 401 employed graduates participated in an online survey. The surveys inquired about their attachment towards their major, participation in various academic and non-academic activities, and their participation's contribution to their successful employment. In regards to their majors, women, in general, had lower levels of satisfaction, confidence, attachment, and motivation to succeed in their fields when compared to their male counterparts. These results show that engineering colleges still need to work on empowering female engineering students to gain confidence in their engineering major and attachment. The graduate school experience was highly rated by both men and women, whereas double majors exhibited somewhat lower scores. Among academic activities, part-time work experience and major-related internships were rated as the most helpful, and among extracurricular activities, study-abroad for language training and participation in student council or clubs received high scores. There was little difference between men and women in study-abroad participation, and women participated more actively in student councils. However, women had much less major-related work experience, reaffirming that colleges need to expand internship and field experience programs for female students.
Pusan National University School of Medicine (PNUSOM) began analyzing the cohort of pre-medical students admitted in 2015 and has been conducting purposeful analyses for the past 3 years. The aim of this paper is to introduce the process of cohort establishment, cohort composition, and the utilization of cohort analysis results. PNUSOM did not initially form a cohort with a purpose or through a systematic process, but was able to collect longitudinal data on students through the establishment of a Medical Education Information System and an organization that supports medical education. Cohort construction at our university is different in terms of a clear orientation toward research questions, flexibility in cohort composition, and subsequent guideline supplementation. We investigated the relevance of admission factors, performance improvements, satisfaction with the educational environment, and promotion and failure rate in undergraduate students, as well as performance levels and career paths in graduates. The results were presented to the Admissions Committee, Curriculum Committee, Learning Outcomes Committee, and Student Guidance Committee to be used as a basis for innovations and improvements in education. Since cohort studies require long-term efforts, it is necessary to ensure the efficiency of data collection for graduate cohorts, as well as the validity and ethics of the study.
Each year research institutions such as the Korea Employment Information Service(KEIS), a government institution established for the advancement of employment support services, and Job Korea, a popular Korean job website, announce first job waiting times after college graduation. This provides useful information understand and resolve youth unemployment problems. However, previous reports deal with the time as a completely observed one and are not appropriate. This paper proposes a new study on first job waiting times after college graduation set to 4 months prior to graduation. In Korea, most college students hunt for jobs before college graduation in addition, the full-fledged job markets also open before graduation. In this case the exact waiting time of college graduates can be right-censored. We apply a Cox proportional hazards model to evaluate the associations between first job waiting times and risk factors. A real example is based on the 2008 Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey(GOMS).
The purpose of the present study was to identify the charateristics and social activities of graduates from a School of Public Health in Seoul and to provide basic information which might contribute to the improvement of new established Schools of Public Health in Korea. The Subjects were composed of 199 persons who graduated from a School of Public Health in Seoul during the period of 1987 through 1989. The response rate was 59.8% (199 graduates). The survey was conducted from December 1st 1991 to the end of February 1992 with a self-administered questionnaire by mail. Descriptive analysis with Chi-square test was employed for analysis. The major results were as follows : 1. 462% of students were the group aged 24-28 and 76.5% of them were married at the time of entrance to the School. 2. The major motives to come to the School were continuous study in a graduate school(41.2%), and strengthening of job opportunities(35.3%). 3. The major expectation of students were to acquire new professional knowledge(31.9%), to improve present work performance(22.7%) and to become an educator(22.7%). 4. 84.9% of students had some kinds of expectation at the entrance to the School, but only 48.8% of them met their expectations they had had. 5. The most preferred subjects were Health Statistics and Epidemiology in order. 6. 59.7% of students insisted that a professor should advise 4-5 students in maximum for a thesis. 7. Students suggested that the candidate for scholarship should he selected from those who had earned high credits in the previous semester(33.6%), who were low economic status(31.l%) or who were recommended by academic adviser(24.4%). 8. 57.1% of students were positive in utilizing their major subjects studied in their current works. 9. Students expressed that if the School of Public Health is to be further developed full-time professors should be added (37.9%) and excellent students be secured (33.6%). 10. After graduation from the school, some of the respondents changed their job placement, the number of persons working in research institutes increased from 6 to 14 persons, those working in educational institutes from 16 to 35, and Ministry of Health and Social Affairs and its affiliated organization from 10 to 13.
