버밍엄 문화연구에 대한 재고찰과 '비재현적 문화연구'의 필요성 -스튜어트 홀과 주요 연구자들의 사유와 방법론을 중심으로 (Re-reading Birmingham Cultural Studies for 'Non-representational Cultural Studies' in South Korea -with Stuart Hall's Philosophy and Methodology)

  • 이 글은 '비재현적 문화연구'에 대한 소개와 필요성, 시급함에 대하여 버밍엄 문화연구의 재고찰을 통하여 이야기한다. 더불어 어떻게 비재현적 문화연구라는 지적 기획이 추상적 구분과 재현적 담론이 주도했던 그 동안의 주된 문화연구적 사고와 방법론에서 빈번히 배제되었던 세계의 양식들에 강조점을 두어 이를 읽어 내는지 살펴본다. 대표적으로 스튜어트 홀의 주요 저작과 후기 생애에 대한 실천적 모습을 통해 비교적 익숙한 모습의 버밍엄 문화연구 한계를 극복하면서 궁극적으로 문화연구, 특히 한국의 문화연구를 현재 시점에서 다시 한 번 생각해 보고자 했다. 이 글에선 주로 후기 스튜어트 홀의 사유와 현실에 밀착된 방법론의 관계성 그리고 그 방향성을 주목하여 살펴보았다. 사실 한국 문화연구는 버밍엄 문화연구와 특별히 연구 방향성과 주제의 부분에서 거의 같은 것으로 여겨져 왔고, 우리 비판언론학계에서 이러한 이른바 '전통적 영국 문화연구'의 영향력은 여전히 매우 강력하지만, 오히려 어떤 면에서 이는 매우 한국적이며 특수한 현상일 뿐이다. 그 점을 스튜어트 홀의 대표 저작들에 대한 재독해와 이에 기반을 두어 후기 삶의 실천적 자취를 따라가 보면서 조금이나마 발견해 보고자 했다.

Accessibility of Korean Cultural Values at Screens: Decoding Patterns of North American Audiences

  • This research investigates the accessibility of Korean modern values at screens from the perspectives of North American audiences while consuming Korean films and TV dramas. In order to decode Korean cultural values at screens, this study collects the data of 266 Korean films and TV dramas distributed in North America from IMDb platform, unlocking that the success of box office for Korean projects in North America is positively correlated with the characteristics of Violence & Gore and Profanity. Meanwhile, the audiences' positive responses to the violent project mainly depends on the degree of "Sex and Nudity", the plots of "social groups". The current success of Korean cultural and creative industry as well as the future global markets strengths are analyzed in this research. Stuart Hall's cultural studies approach and cultural psychological account theory are applied to discuss the success of Korean entertainment industry in the transnational cultural communication.

A Study on Motives of Chinese Female Audiences for Watching Korean Fantasy TV Dramas

  • With love as the theme and mythology, ghosts and magic as elements, Korean fantasy TV dramas have set romantic and beautiful plots and attracted a large number of Chinese female audiences. Based on Melodramatic Imagination and Stuart Hall's theory of "encoding/decoding", this paper investigated Chinese female audiences' motives of watching Korean fantasy TV dramas Hotel Druena through the form of focus group interviews to interpret reasons for the popularity of Korean fantasy TV dramas and Chinese women's overall cognition of Korean TV dramas from the perspective of female audiences. Thinking that South Korea's fantasy dramas are good at women's pursuit and desire for emotional elements, women who watch this type of south Korean TV dramas are temporarily relieving pressure of real life, thus satisfying the needs of female gaze and consumption.

흑인 문화의 특수성을 내재한 미국의 캐주얼 패션디자인 특성 (The Characteristics of Black Culture Inherent in the American Casual Fashion Design)

  • This study aims to identify the elements of black culture and use it to analyze the formative characteristics of casual fashion items as well as the symbolic meanings presented in the graphic designs of the items. First of all, in order to distinguish the identity of black culture, this study made a division into racial, social, and artistic aspects based on cultural specificities of Stuart Hall, a culture theorist. This was for a theoretical review and based on this review, a theoretical framework was developed to analyze the characteristics of American casual fashion design of black people. The case study selected 1719 fashion images of 137 male brands and 33 female brands from websites of companies manufacturing casual wear of black people in America. The following is a summary of the study results. The conceptual characteristics based on specificities of black culture can be categorized into ten attributes: playfulness in order to digest human grief and emotion positively, satire of the mainstream society, spontaneity through emotional expression from the heart, abstractness of various emotions elating suffering, humor trying to express negative aspects as the meaning of light and innocent laughter, dependence with passive attitudes toward discrimination and master-slave relationships in history, resistance against discrimination and disadvantages, African orientation and primitiveness pursuing natural conditions, aggressiveness against violence and unfair treatment, and confidence and defiance against social deprivation and corruption. Based on the results of an analysis through formative classification system founded on racial, social, and artistic aspects of black people, specificities of black culture are of formative characteristics of their casual fashion design. These elements are presented on graphic t-shirts through strong colors, loose silhouette, and details with many pockets. These characteristics were reflected in symbolic meanings presented in the graphic.
