  • The tribrachial flame has attracted interest as a basic structure of the flame edge. This flame structure helps understand stabilization of laminar flames and re-ignition of turbulent flames. A number of analytical and experimental studies have been carried out on the tribrachial flame. However, the effect of the variation of the flammability limits on the structure of the tribrachial flame has not been studied in detail. In this study, the effect of non-symmetric flammability limits on the flame structure was investigated by adopting a simple numerical scheme based on several laminar flame theories. A fixed velocity field was considered and boundary matching algorithm was used on the premixed branch. The variation of the diffusion branches under the non-symmetric flammability limits and heat loss was investigated. The formation and extinction of the diffusion branch behind the premixed branch were successfully described. This basic study can help understand the fundamental structure of the flame and can form the basis of subsequent detailed studies.

  • We investigated the genetic structure of Korean and Japanese ayu Plecoglossus altivelis populations by examining 669 individuals from 14 populations using three microsatellite loci. Genetic variation did not differ significantly among the populations examined in terms of allelic number and heterozygosity. Korean populations were genetically close to each other, implying that persistent gene flow has occurred in these populations. This suggests that eastern populations in Korea form a single large population and all of the Korean populations are distinct from the Japanese populations. Pairwise population $F_{ST}$ estimates, principal component analyses, and a neighbor-joining tree showed that genetic separation between the southern and pooled eastern coast populations was probably influenced by restricted gene flow. Hierarchical analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed a weak but significant genetic structure among three ayu groups (eastern and southern coasts of Korea and the Japan coast), and no genetic variation within groups. The estimated genetic population structure and potential applications of microsatellite markers may aid in the proper management of ayu populations.

  • Variation in the microbial biomass and community structure found in sediment of heavily polluted bays and the adjacent unpolluted areas were examined using phospholipid fatty acid analysis. Total microbial biomass and microbial community structure were responding to environmental determinants, sediment grain size, depth of sediment, and pollution due to petroleum hydrocarbons. The marker fatty acids of microeukaryotes and prokaryotes - aerobic, anaerobic, and sulfate-reducing bacteria - were detected in sediments of the areas studied. Analysis of the fatty acid profiles revealed wide variations in the community structure in sediments, depending on the extent of pollution, sediment depth, and sediment grain size. The abundance of specific bacterial fatty acids points to the dominance of prokaryotic organisms, whose composition differed among the stations. Fatty acid distributions in sediments suggest the high contribution of aerobic bacteria. Sediments of polluted sites were significantly enriched with anaerobic bacteria in comparison with clean areas. The contribution of this bacterial group increased with the depth of sediments. Anaerobic bacteria were predominantly present in muddy sediments, as evidenced from the fatty acid profiles. Relatively high concentrations of marker fatty acids of sulfate-reducing bacteria were associated with organic pollution in this site. Specific fatty acids of microeukaryotes were more abundant in surface sediments than in deeper sediment layers. Among the microeukaryotes, diatoms were an important component. Significant amounts of bacterial biomass, the predominance of bacterial biomarker fatty acids with abundance of anaerobic and sulfate-reducing bacteria are indicative of a prokaryotic consortium responsive to organic pollution.

  • A study for the structural strength evaluation of doubler plates subjected to the in-plane combined load and lateral pressure load has been performed through a systematic evaluation process. In order to properly estimate the static strength of doubler plate, elasto-plastic large deflection analysis is introduced including the contact effect between main plate and doubler. The characteristics of stiffness and strength variation are discussed based on the analysis results. Also, in order to compare the doubler structure with the original strength of main plate without doubler, a simple formula for the evaluation of the equivalent flat plate thickness is derived based on the additional series analysis of fiat plate structure. Using this derived equation, the thickness change of a equivalent flat plate is analyzed according to the variation of various design parameters of doubler plate and some design guides are suggested In order to maintain the original strength of main plate without doubler reinforcement. Finally, correlation between derived equivalent plate thickness formula and the developed buckling strength formulas for intact plates by author et al. is discovered and these relations are formulated for the future development of simple strength evaluation formula of doubler plate structure.

  • When industrial by-products like slag and fly ash are using in concrete with cement, it improves strength and durability against external deterioration factors by densifying the structure through potential hydraulic and pozzolanic reaction. But it has been pointed out that high dependence on the quality variation and the curing condition using a admixure material for concrete. In this study, the characteristics of internal micropore structure according to curing condition were analyzed for pastes and mortar specimens under using blast furnace slag powder. As a result, the variation of compressive strength and the internal microstructure were observed according to curing conditions by binder type. Particularly, using blast furnace slag powder, decrease in compressive strength were clearly observed in indoor and carbonation curing compared with water curing. The pore structure analysis also clearly observed the decrease of the gel pore existing in the CSH hydrate layer and the increase of the capillary pore in indoor and carbonation curing compared with water curing condition.

  • Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composites (FRCCs) have electrical conductivity by inserting reinforced conductive fibers into a cementitious matrix. Such characteristic allows us to utilize FRCCs for crack monitoring of a structure by measuring electrical responses without sensor installation. However, the electrical responses are often sensitively altered by temperature variation as well as crack initiation. The temperature variation may disturb crack detection on the measured electrical responses. Moreover, as sensing probes for measuring electrical reponses increase, undesired contact noises are often augmented. In this paper, a self-sensing impedance circuit is specially designed for reducing the number of sensing probes. The crack initiation and temperature variation effects on the self-sensing impedance responses of FRCCs are experimentally investigated using the self-sensing impedance circuit. The experiment results reveal that the electrical impedance response are more sensitively changed due to temperature variation than crack initiation.

  • Longitudinal studies repeatedly measure outcomes over time. Therefore, repeated measurements are serially correlated from same subject (within-subject variation) and there is also variation between subjects (between-subject variation). The serial correlation and the between-subject variation must be taken into account to make proper inference on covariate effects (Diggle et al., 2002). However, estimation of the covariance matrix is challenging because of many parameters and positive definiteness of the matrix. To overcome these limitations, we propose autoregressive moving average Cholesky decomposition (ARMACD) for the linear mixed models. The ARMACD allows a class of flexible, nonstationary, and heteroscedastic models that exploits the structure allowed by combining the AR and MA modeling of the random effects covariance matrix. We analyze a real dataset to illustrate our proposed methods.

  • The genetic diversity and population structure of fifteen Potentilla discolor Bunge populations in Korea were determined using genetic variations at 19 allozyme loci. Fourteen of the 19 loci (73.7%) showed detectable polymorphism. Genetic diversity at the species level and at the population level was high ($H_{ES}\;=\;0.215$, $H_{EP}\;=\;0.196$, respectively), whereas the extent of the population divergence was relatively low $(G_{ST}\;=\;0.069)$. Total genetic diversity values $(H_T)$ varied between 0.0 and 0.656, giving an average overall polymorphic loci of 0.292. The interlocus variation of genetic diversity within populations $(H_S)$ was high (0.274). On a per locus basis, the proportion of total genetic variation due to differences among populations $(G_{ST})$ ranged from 0.010 for Pgm-2 to 0.261 for Pgd-2 with a mean of 0.069, indicating that about 6.9% of the total allozyme variation was among populations. Wide geographic ranges, perennial herbaceous nature and the persistence of multiple generations are associated with the high level of genetic variation in P. discolor. The estimate of gene flow based on $G_{ST}$ was high among Korean populations of P. discolor (Nm = 3.36).

  • The genetic diversity and population structure of Potentilla freyniana in Korea were determined using genetic variations at 19 allozyme loci. Thirteen of the 19 loci (68.4%) showed detectable polymorphism. Genetic diversity at the population level was high ($H_{EP}$ = 0.270). Total genetic diversity values ($H_T$) varied between 0.190 and 0.584, giving an average overall polymorphic loci of 0.371. The interlocus variation of genetic diversity within populations ($H_S$) was high (0.354). On a per locus basis, the proportion of total genetic variation due to differences among populations ($G_{ST}$) ranged from 0.008 for Fe-2 to 0.310 for Gpi with a mean of 0.065, indicating that about 6.5% of the total allozyme variation was among populations. Wide geographic ranges, perennial herbaceous nature and the persistence of multiple generations are associated with the high level of genetic variation in P. freyniana. The estimate of gene flow based on $G_{ST}$, was high among Korean populations of P. freyniana (Nm =3.57). Although P. freyniana usually propagated by asexually-produced ramets, I could not rule out the possibility that sexual reproduction occurred at a low rate because each ramet may produce terminal flowers.
