  • In this work, we prepared epoxy/BMI composites by using N,N'-bismaleimide-4,4'-diphenylmethane (BMI), epoxy resin (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA)), and 4,4'-diamino diphenyl methane (DDM). The thermal properties and water sorption behaviors of the epoxy and BMI composites were investigated. For the epoxy/BMI composites, the glass transition and decomposition temperatures both increased with increasing BMI addition, which indicates the effect of BMI addition on improved thermal stability. The water sorption behaviors were gravi-metrically measured as a function of humidity, temperature, and composition. The diffusion coefficient and water uptake decreased and the activation energy for water diffusion increased with increasing BMI content, indicating that the water sorption in epoxy resin, which causes reliability problems in electronic devices, can be diminished by BMI addition. The water sorption behaviors in the epoxy/BMI composites were interpreted in terms of their chemical and morphological structures.

  • Fe-Ni has been of great interest because it is known as one of low thermal expansion alloys as various application areas. This alloy was fabricated by electroforming process, and effect of heat treatment on thermal expansion and hardness was investigated. Nano-crystalline structure of 13.3 - 63.5 nm in size was observed in the as-deposited alloy. To investigate the effect of heat treatment on grain growth and mechanical/thermal properties, we conducted hardness and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). From this, we confirmed these properties were varied by heat treatment. In this nano-crystalline alloy, we could observe abnormal behavior in thermal expansion between $350-400^{\circ}C$. Additionally, an abrupt change in hardness has also been observed. However, once the grains grow up to micro-sized the mechanical and thermal properties mentioned above were stabilized similar to those of bulk alloys due to heat treatment.

  • It is well known that poly(cyclohexylene dimethylene terephthalate) (PCT) is used as the engineering plastics with high melting temperature and fast crystallization rate compared with poly(butylene terephthalate)(PBT). However, poor thermal stability of PCT has limited its practical application due to the drastic decrease of molecular weight during the processing temperature. In order to improve the thermal stability of PCT homopolymer, the copolymer of PCT and PBT was synthesized and the thermal properties of the copolymer have been studied. P(CT/BT) copolymer was obtained by condensation polymerization of DMT, CHDM, and 1,4-butanediol. The chemical structure and composition of the copolymer was investigated by FTIR and NMR analysis. The thermal behavior of copolymer was studied using DSC and it was found that the crystallization-melting behavior of the copolymer was observed for the whole composition range. TGA analysis exhibited that P(CT/BT) copolymer is more stable at the initial stage of thermal decomposition compared with PCT and PBT homopolymers.

  • In this paper, we design a helical fin structure for the heat sink for a high-power LED lighting module, and analyze its thermal properties. By means of the helical fin structure, we can obtain about 14% larger surface area for the limited volume and it can decrease the LED chip temperature by about 12%. Because this helical fin heat sink has 15% less total volume than a conventional one, we can also expect to reduce the production cost due to these structural properties.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the thermal characteristics of men's suits ensembles and their fabrics. For the study, 100% wool fabrics were woven with various fabric structure, fabric density and yam count and With the use of these, 12 men's suits were made with the same design. Physical characteristics that affect thermal transport properties, including drapery, cover factor; bulk density, keeping warmth ratio, vapor permeability, air permeability and porosity of the fabrics were measured. In addition, thermal resistance of men's suit ensembles, including Y-shirts, inner wear and socks was measured on the thermal manikin in the environmental chamber. The result of the study was as follows: 1. In terms of fabric structure, keeping warmth ratio of plain woven fabrics was higher than those of twill and satin woven fabrics and also, vapor and air permeability and porosity of plain woven fabrics were higher than those of twill and satin woven fabrics. 2. The result showed that thermal resistance of 12 ensembles were in the range of 0.77clo~0.97clo. 3. There was little correlation between woven condition such as, including structure, fabric density and yam count and thermal resistance of ensembles.

  • Parameter analysis of mass concrete structures of two types subjected to heat of hydration and surface heat transfer is presented. Thermal stress analysis is conducted through the 3D FEM program. Thermal and mechanical properties of concrete, for example, conductivity, heat capacity, density, thermal expansion coefficient are varied from 80% to 120% of a reference value, and the change of thermal stress against the parameter is achieved respectively. As a result of the analysis, the parameter affecting thermal stress most significantly is an adiabatic temperature rise in the case of wall-type structure, and an initial temperature of concrete in the case of slab-type structure, respectively.

  • Composites based on engineering thermoplastics exhibit excellent mechanical and thermal properties and simple processing and reprocessing attributes, and are widely used in the aerospace, three-dimensional (3D) printing, and automobile industries. Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is one of the most desirable engineering thermoplastics, owing to its superior thermal performance, inherent flame retardancy resulting from the presence of sulfur in its backbone structure, chemical resistance, and satisfactory electrical properties. However, pure PPS resin has limited applicability owing to its brittleness. To compensate for these shortcomings, various filler materials are frequently used in the manufacture of PPS composites. In this review, we would like to present the correlation between the structure and physical properties of PPS composite materials using various fillers.

  • In this paper, we propose thermal resistance compact model of FinFET structure that has hexagon shaped source/drain. The heating effect and thermal properties were increased by reduced size of the device, and thermal resistance is an important factor to analyze the effect and the properties. The heat source and each contact that is moved heat out were set up in transistor, and domain is divided by the heat source and the four parts of contacts : source, drain, gate, substrate. Each contact thermal resistance model is subdivided as a easily interpretable structure by analyzing the temperature and heat flow of the TCAD simulation results. The domains are modeled based on an integration or conformal mapping method through the structure parameters according to its structure. First modeled by analyzing the thermal resistance to a single fin, and applying the change in the parameter of the channel increases to improve the accuracy of the thermal resistance model of the multi-fin/ finger. The proposed thermal resistance model was compared to the thermal resistance by analyzing results of the 3D Technology CAD simulations, and the proposed total thermal resistance model has an error of 3 % less in single and multi-finl. The proposed thermal resistance model can predict the thermal resistance due to the increase of the fin / finger, and the circuit characteristics can be improved by calculating the self-heating effect and thermal characterization.

  • In this study, Mangifera Indica tree sawdust reinforced bisphenol-A aniline based benzoxazine composites were prepared by varying the sawdust from 20 wt% to 45 wt%. Thermogravimetric analysis of composites revealed excellent compatibility between polybenzoxazine and sawdust from the remarkable growth in char yield from 22% (neat resin) to 36% (for highly filled) and glass transition temperature from 151 to 165℃. Ultimate weight loss of the composites evaluated from the Derivatives of TG plots. Limiting oxygen index values of the composites reported considerable growth i.e.,from 28 to 32 along with the increase in filler content. Differential scanning calorimetry results showed that sawdust particles have an insignificant effect on curing temperature (219℃) for the raise in sawdust content. Structure of the sawdust, benzoxazine monomer, polybenzoxazine and composites were studied using Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. Overall, polybenzoxazine composites with sawdust as filler showed improved thermal properties when compared with pure polybenzoxazine.
