  • As a governmental plan for real estate revitalization, remodeling vertical extension has been permitted. Thus, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport preannounced proclaiming the revised Housing Act and establishing the remodeling basic plan, and it is anticipated that the remodeling market will be revitalized in earnest after the enforcement of remodeling vertical extension(April 25th. 2014). As vertical extension is applicable up to 3 stories, the safety of building for remodeling is becoming important, so most remodeling construction works use various methods for structural reinforcement. In this process, the selection of structural reinforcement method has depended on structural engineer's experience and knowledge and there has been a limitation in selecting the optimum structural reinforcement method which considers remodeling project characteristics. Therefore, this study analyzed the factors to determine the kinds of structural reinforcement method in a remodeling project and suggested a process to select the best structural reinforcement method of remodeling construction.

  • This paper described a method for analyzing the structural performance of a metal container used for disposing radioactive waste generated during the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant, and numerical analysis results of a method for reinforcing the container. The containers to be analyzed were those that can be used in near-surface and landfill disposal facilities scheduled to be operated at the Gyeongju radioactive waste disposal facility. Structural reinforcement of the container was performed by lattice reinforcement, column reinforcement, and bottom plate reinforcement. Accordingly, a total of 14 reinforcement cases were modeled. The external force causing damage to the container was set equivalent to the impact of a 9-m fall, accounting for the height of the vault at the near-surface disposal facility. The reinforcement methods with a high contribution to the structural performance of the container were concluded to be lattice and column reinforcements.

  • Recently, the educational facilities were 45% among total damaged facilities from the Po-Hang earthquake. Consequently, the seismic reinforcement of existing educational facilities were ended up attracting people's interesting. However, research is insufficient to consider that how far technology has been developed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the level of domestic guideline research by comparing to foreign guidelines in regard to seismic reinforcement methods applicable to existing educational facilities. To achieve the objective, first, the current status of seismic reinforcement projects in domestic educational facilities was analyzed. Second, the domestic and foreign seismic reinforcement methods guidelines for structural, non-structural was compared. Third, the improvement directions for future guidelines were suggested. As a results, the improvement directions of domestic seismic reinforcement methods guidelines were proposed. First, the structural seismic reinforcement strategy needs to be segmented. Second, it is necessary to analyze about non-structural guidelines based on additional cases. In the future, this study can be used as a basic material for developing seismic reinforcement methods guidelines in domestic existing educational facilities.

  • The modern automotive industry develops innovative vehicle designs to meet increasing stability of car and performance demands of their customers. The improvement of frame rigidity by the structural foam is thought to be an effective means to improve the performance because of high applicability and minimum weight. The object of this paper is to examine the use of structural foam in a hat section as an optimum reinforcing means, to compare the reinforcing performance of structural foam versus a plastic reinforcement. The result of this paper indicated that reinforcing efficiencies are achieved by structural foam and plastic reinforcement shape.

  • This paper presents special-purpose design program and plastic design results for hollow RC bridge columns with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction. The developed reinforcement details has economic feasibility and rationality and makes construction periods shorter. This study documents the economic evaluation of hollow reinforced concrete bridge column systems with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction and presents conclusions based on the application findings. As a result, the proposed reinforcement details for material quantity reduction were designed prior to the existing reinforcement details in terms of structural rationality, constructability, and economic.

  • The presence of reinforcement has a significant influence on the stress-strain behaviour of reinforced concrete structures, expecially when the failure stage of the structures is approached. In the present paper, the constrained and non-constrained zones of concrete due to the presence of reinforcement is developed and the stress-stress-strain behaviour of concrete is enhanced by a reinforcement confinement coefficient, Furthermore, a flexible method for the modelling of reinforcement with arbitrary orientation and not passing the nodes of concrete element is also proposed. Numerical examples and laboratory tests have shown that the coefficient and the modelling technique proposed by the author are satisfactory.

  • This study was made to examine the motion characteristics according to the reinforcement of the reinforcement length and stiffener reinforcement for shear reinforcement to the foundation structure reinforced with shear reinforcement steel plate. Experimental study was made after specimen was installed on the ground as the same as in the practical site. Reinforcement lengths of the steel for shear reinforcement are divided into 1,000 mm, 1,200 mm and 1,400 mm in the specimen and as for reinforcement method of the stiffener, 4 stiffeners with interval of 100mm reinforced with the same materials as the shear reinforcement were manufactured for the experiment. Considering result of the experiment, it is expressed that no effect of the stiffener reinforcement was found and regarding the reinforcement length of shear reinforcement material the crossed point of the two converted lines of the value that the shear force is expressed in the bearing power in the expanded dangerous section and the value that the shear capacity receivable by the reinforcement materials in the dangerous section is proposed as effective reinforcement length.

  • The objective of this study is to understand the variables affected the confinement for the transverse reinforcement of the reinforced concrete structural walls with the T-shaped cross section subjected to cyclic lateral loads. The structural performance of T-shaped walls was advanced by the transverse reinforcement which restrained the concrete subjected to compressive stress. If the arrangement of transverse reinforcement was not suitable for the confinement, T-shaped walls happened the brittle failure by web crushing or bucking of vertical reinforcement at the compression zone. It is necessary to confine transverse reinforcement in order to prevent the these failure. But the location of neutral axis and the magnitude of ultimate strain vary according to the section shape, a ratio of axial load, a ratio of wall cross sectional area to the floor-plan area, an aspect ratio and the reinforcement ratio. Therefore, the objective of this research is to grasp the location of neutral axis and the range which needs for the confinement of transverse reinforcement through the results of the sectional analysis which varies the ratio of axial load and the ratio of vertical reinforcement.

  • From the development of residential flat plate system, continuously bended shear reinforcement is developed for the prevention of punching shear. To know the punching shear capacity of developed shear reinforcement in slab-column joint, structural test is performed. The testing parameters are shear reinforcement types, such as no reinforcement, bended shear reinforcement, and head stud reinforcement. To verify the lateral capacity, cyclic load is applied under the constant vertical load condition. The results of tests are compared to as global displacement, slab-column joint strength. From the test results, the resisting capacity of developed shear reinforcement system has a good performance in the story drift ratio.

  • Investigations of low-rice unbounded reinforced concrete shear walls with or without openings are performed with comparison of analytical and experimental results. Theoretical analysis is based on nonlinear finite element algorithm, which incorporates concrete failure criterion and nonlinear constitutive relationships. Studios focus on the effects of height-to-length ratio of shear walls, opening ratio, horizontal and vertical reinforcement radios, and diagonal reinforcement. Analytical solutions conform well with experimental results. Equations for cracking, yielding and ultimate loads with corresponding lateral displacements are derived by regression using analytical results and experimental data. Also, failure modes of low-rise unbounded shear walls are theoretically investigated. An explanation of change in failure mode is ascertained by comparing analytical results and ACI code equations. Shear-flexural failure can be obtained with additional flexural reinforcement to increase a wall's capacity. This concept leads to a design method of reducing flexural reinforcement in low-rise bounded solid shear wall's. Avoidance of shear failure as well as less reinforcement congestion leer these walls is expected.
