This paper presents a time-domain Gauss-Newton full-waveform inversion method for the material profile reconstruction in heterogeneous semi-infinite solid media. To implement the inverse problem in a finite computational domain, perfectly-matchedlayers( PMLs) are introduced as wave-absorbing boundaries within which the domain's wave velocity profile is to be reconstructed. The inverse problem is formulated in a partial-differential-equations(PDE)-constrained optimization framework, where a least-squares misfit between measured and calculated surface responses is minimized under the constraint of PML-endowed wave equations. A Gauss-Newton-Krylov optimization algorithm is utilized to iteratively update the unknown wave velocity profile with the aid of a specialized regularization scheme. Through a series of one-dimensional examples, the solution of the Gauss-Newton inversion was close enough to the target profile, and showed superior convergence behavior with reduced wall-clock time of implementation compared to a conventional inversion using Fletcher-Reeves optimization algorithm.

This paper introduces a mesh continuation scheme for a one-dimensional inverse medium problem to reconstruct the spatial distribution of elastic wave velocities in heterogeneous semi-infinite solid domains. To formulate the inverse problem, perfectly-matched-layers(PMLs) are introduced as wave-absorbing boundaries that surround the finite computational domain truncated from the originally semi-infinite extent. To tackle the inverse problem in the PML-truncated domain, a partial-differential-equations(PDE)-constrained optimization approach is utilized, where a least-squares misfit between calculated and measured surface responses is minimized under the constraint of PML-endowed wave equations. The optimization problem iteratively solves for the unknown wave velocities with their updates calculated by Fletcher-Reeves conjugate gradient algorithms. The optimization is performed using a mesh continuation scheme through which the wave velocity profile is reconstructed in successively denser mesh conditions. Numerical results showed the robust performance of the mesh continuation scheme in reconstructing target wave velocity profile in a layered heterogeneous solid domain.
In this paper, an integrated optimal design software system for structural components has been developed which interfaces existing commercial codes for CAD, CAE and Optimization. They include specialized optimal design software codes such as iSIGHT and VisualDOC, optimization module imbedded in CAD software developed by CAD developers, and optimal design software systems based on API of commercial CAD software. The advantages of the CAD imbedded optimal design approach and those of specialized optimal design software are taken to develop the system. The user defines optimal design formulation in the user interface for problem definition in the CAD control stage, where design variables are directly selectable from the CAD model and various properties and performance functions defined. The commercial CAD codes, Open I-DEAS are used for the development. The resulting software is minimally connected to CAD and CAE systems while keeping maximum independence from each other. This assures flexibility and freedom for problem definition. Fatigue life optimization is taken as a nontrivial application area. As a specific example, the shape design of a knuckle part of an automobile is performed, where the minimum fatigue life over the material domain in terms of the number of cycles of a curb strike are maximized under the constraint of not exceeding the current mass. The fatigue life has been improved by four times of the initial life. The developed software is illustrated to maintain the advantages of existing optimal design software systems while improving independency and flexibility.
Modern swarm intelligence heuristic search methods are widely applied in the field of structural health monitoring due to their advantages of excellent global search capacity, loose requirement of initial guess and ease of computational implementation etc. To this end, a hybrid strategy is proposed based on butterfly optimization algorithm (BOA) and differential evolution (DE) with purpose of effective combination of their merits. In the proposed identification strategy, two improvements including mutation and crossover operations of DE, and dynamic adaptive operators are introduced into original BOA to reduce the risk to be trapped in local optimum and increase global search capability. The performance of the proposed algorithm, hybrid butterfly optimization and differential evolution algorithm (HBODEA) is evaluated by two numerical examples of a simply supported beam and a 37-bar truss structure, as well as an experimental test of 8-story shear-type steel frame structure in the laboratory. Compared with BOA and DE, the numerical and experimental results show that the proposed HBODEA is more robust to detect the reduction of stiffness with limited sensors and contaminated measurements. In addition, the effect of search space, two dynamic operators, population size on identification accuracy and efficiency of the proposed identification strategy are further investigated.

DMAIC is the most familiar problem-solving methodology to battery manufacturing-related engineers, but continuous problems such as task delay, insufficient performance, and partial optimization are occurring due to indiscriminate application to various tasks of battery production system developers. In order to secure an "optimized model for DMAIC methodology" that can effectively respond to battery production system developers' tasks, a three-stage research model was used to derive the required characteristics of the production system developer task methodology, analyze the suitability of DMAIC, and conduct optimization modeling by supplementing the shortcomings. It was confirmed that the DMAIC methodology can be more suitable by applying the "system structural seven-step methodology", which is the result of this study, to developer tasks. It is expected that it will be applied to various industrial fields in the future by making it easier to learn and allowing differentiated operations according to the characteristics of various industries.

The finite element analysis (FEA) is widely used in modern structural dynamics because the performance of structure can be predicted in early stage. However, due to the difficulty in determination of various uncertain parameters, it is not easy to obtain a reliable finite element model. To overcome these difficulties, a updating program of FE model is developed by consisting of pretest, correlation and update. In correlation, it calculates modal assurance criteria, cross orthogonality, mixed orthogonality and coordinate modal assurance criteria. For the model updating, the continuum sensitivity analysis and design optimization tool(DOT) are used. The SENSUP program is developed for model updating giving physical parameter sensitivity. The developed program is applied to practical examples such as the BLDC spindle motor of HDD, and upper housing of induction motor. And the sensor placement for the square plate is compared using several methods.

Differential shortenings of columns in a highrise building must be considered in the design process to avoid unexpected damages in structural and nonstructural elements. While research activity has been reported in the literature on the development of estimation algorithms or prediction procedures of elastic and inelastic column shortenings, no algorithms or methods for compensation of differential shortenings. In this paper a compensation method for differential column shortenings in a high-rise is formulated as an optimization problem The simulated annealing algorithm is used to find optimal solutions. The performance of the proposed method is presented by using the well known examples developed by PCA.

The concept of VDD(Virtual Design & Development) based on high performance computing technology is introduced. The whole process of design and development could be carried out in cyber space through VDD technology in which high-precision simulation technology is combined with virtual reality technology. Therefore, time for design and development of a new product can be shorten and quality of product can be also improved. However, efficient simulation technology must be developed and appropriate supercomputing system must be available to realize VDD technology. In this work, several technologies for obtaining cost-effective supercomputing systems for VDD technology are introduced and investigated. The detail informations about optimization technology for PC(Personal Computer) computing, clustering technology, Internet Supercomputing technology, and Piggyback technology are provided and numerical results are also presented.

The useful method for determining parameters of weighting functions used to design the $H_{\infty}$ current controller for attenuating the current ripple due to saliencies which SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) also incorporates is described. To analyze the effect, the current ripple due to the structural and the saturation saliencies, the SPMSM model with nonlinear inductance function depending on the two independent variables, rotor position and stator current is simulated. After analysis, parameters of the weighting functions for $H_{\infty}$ current controller is selected to satisfy the robust stability, robust performance and specific performance in time and frequency domain by using the PSO(Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm in the linear SPMSM model. Especially, the robust performance is proved that the selected weighting functions play a role in reducing the current ripple caused by the saliencies of SPMSM at the desired frequency range by the simple experiment.
H-infinity norm relates to the maximum in the frequency response function and H-infinity control method focuses on the case that the vibration is excited at the fundamental frequency, while 2-norm relates to the output energy of systems with the input of pulses or white noises and 2-norm control method weighs the overall vibration performance of systems. The trade-off between the performance in frequency-domain and that in time-domain may be achieved by integrating two indices in the mixed vibration control method. Based on the linear fractional state space representation in the modal space for a piezoelectric flexible structure with uncertain modal parameters and un-modeled residual high-frequency modes, a mixed dynamic output feedback control design method is proposed to suppress the structural vibration. Using the linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique, the initial populations are generated by the designing of robust control laws with different H-infinity performance indices before the robust 2-norm performance index of the closed-loop system is included in the fitness function of optimization. A flexible beam structure with a piezoelectric sensor and a piezoelectric actuator are used as the subject for numerical studies. Compared with the velocity feedback control method, the numerical simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
