In this paper, a multi-step optimization using genetic algorithm with variable penalty function is introduced to the structural design optimization of a grinding machine. The design problem, in this study, is to find out the optimum configuration and dimensions of structural members which minimize the static compliance, the dynamic compliance, and the weight of the machine structure simultaneously under several design constraints such as dimensional constraints, maximum deflection limit, safety criterion, and maximum vibration amplitude limit. The first step is shape optimization, in which the best structural configuration is found by getting rid of structural members that have no contributions to the design objectives from the given initial design configuration. The second and third steps are sizing optimization. The second design step gives a set of good design solutions having higher fitness for lightweight and minimum static compliance. Finally the best solution, which has minimum dynamic compliance and weight, is extracted from the good solution set. The proposed design optimization method was successfully applied to the structural design optimization of a grinding machine. After optimization, both static and dynamic compliances are reduced more than 58.4% compared with the initial design, which was designed empirically by experienced engineers. Moreover the weight of the optimized structure are also slightly reduced than before.
A hybrid approach of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Swallow Swarm Optimization algorithm (SSO) namely Hybrid Particle Swallow Swarm Optimization algorithm (HPSSO), is presented as a new variant of PSO algorithm for the highly nonlinear dynamic truss shape and size optimization with multiple natural frequency constraints. Experimentally validation of HPSSO on four benchmark trusses results in high performance in comparison to PSO variants and to those of different optimization techniques. The simulation results clearly show a good balance between global and local exploration abilities and consequently results in good optimum solution.
The joined-wing is a new concept of the airplane wing. The fore-wing and the aft-wing arc joined together in the joined-wing. The range and loiter are longer than those of a conventional wing. The joined-wing can lead to increased aerodynamic performances and reduction of the structural weight. The structural behavior of the joined-wing has a high geometric nonlinearity according to the external loads. The gust loads are the most critical loading conditions in the structural design of the joined-wing. The nonlinear behavior should be considered in the optimization of the joined-wing. It is well known that conventional nonlinear response optimization is extremely expensive: therefore, the conventional method is almost impossible to use in large scale structures such as the joined-wing. In this research, geometric nonlinear response structural optimization is carried out using equivalent loads. Equivalent loads are the load sets which generate the same response field in linear analysis as that from nonlinear analysis. In the equivalent loads method, the external loads are transformed to the equivalent loads (EL) for linear static analysis, and linear response optimization is carried out based on the EL.
SGA (Single Genetic Algorithm) is a heuristic global optimization method based on the natural characteristics and uses many populations and stochastic rules. Therefore SGA needs many function evaluations and takes much time for convergence. In order to solve the demerits of SGA, $\mu$GA(Micro-Genetic Algorithm) has recently been developed. In this study, $\mu$GA which have small populations and fast convergence rate, was applied to structural optimization with discrete or integer variables such as 3, 10 and 25 bar trusses. The optimized results of $\mu$GA were compared with those of SGA. Solutions of $\mu$GA for structural optimization were very similar or superior to those of SGA, and faster convergence rate was obtained. From the results of examples, it is found that $\mu$GA is a suitable and very efficient optimization algorithm for structural design.
In this paper, a Cloud Model based Fruit Fly Optimization Algorithm (CMFOA) is presented for structural damage identification, which is a global optimization algorithm inspired by the foraging behavior of fruit fly swarm. It is assumed that damage only leads to the decrease in elementary stiffness. The differences on time-domain structural acceleration data are used to construct the objective function, which transforms the damaged identification problem of a structure into an optimization problem. The effectiveness, efficiency and accuracy of the CMFOA are demonstrated by two different numerical simulation structures, including a simply supported beam and a cantilevered plate. Numerical results show that the CMFOA has a better capacity for structural damage identification than the basic Fruit Fly Optimization Algorithm (FOA) and the CMFOA is not sensitive to measurement noise.
The structural design problems are acknowledged to be commonly multi-criteria in nature. The various multi-criteria optimization methods are reviewed and the most efficient and easy-to-use Pareto optimal solution methods are applied to structural optimization of a truss and a beam. The result of the study shows that Pareto optimal solution methods can easily be applied to structural optimization with multiple objectives, and the designer can have a choice from those Pareto optimal solutions to meet an appropriate design environment.

Concepts, methods and tools for interactive CAD-based concurrent engineering design optimization of mechanical/structural systems and components which are critical in terms of cost development time, functionality and quality, are presented. The emphasis is on implementation of methods and capabilities for the optimization of composite structural system, and the integration of design process and manufacturing process of composite structures into standard CAD-based concurrent engineering environment The optimization of composite fuselage structures are performed under concurrent engineering environment for the example.
Structural sizing is a rewarding task due to its non-convex constrained nature in the design space. In order to provide both global exploration and proper search refinement, a hybrid method is developed here based on outstanding features of Evolutionary Computing and Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization. The new method introduces an observer phase for memory exploitation in addition to vector-sum movements in the original teacher and learner phases. Proper integer coding is suited and applied for structural size optimization together with a fly-to-boundary technique and an elitism strategy. Performance of the proposed method is further evaluated treating a number of truss examples compared with teaching-learning-based optimization. The results show enhanced capability of the method in efficient and stable convergence toward the optimum and effective capturing of high quality solutions in discrete structural sizing problems.
The great advantages on the Genetic Algorithms(GAs) are ease of implementation, and robustness in solving a wide variety of problems, several GAs based optimization models for solving complex structural problems were proposed. However, there are two major disadvantages in GAs. The first disadvantage, implementation of GAs-based optimization is computationally too expensive for practical use in the field of structural optimization, particularly for large-scale problems. The second problem is too difficult to find proper parameter for particular problem. Therefore, in this paper, a Distributed Hybrid Genetic Algorithms(DHGAs) is developed for structural optimization on a cluster of personal computers. The algorithm is applied to the minimum weight design of steel structures.
