THREE-DIMENSIONAL INFINITE ELEMENTS FOR WAVE FORCE EVALUATION ON OFFSHORE STRUCTURES (해양구조물의 파력산정을 위한 3-차원 무한요소)

  • The finite element technique incorporating infinite elements is applied to analyzing the general three dimensional wave-structure interaction problems within the limits of linear wave theory. The hydrodynamic farces are assumed to be inertially dominated, and viscous effects are neglected. In order to analyze the corresponding boundary value problems efficiently, two types of elements are developed. One is the infinite element for modeling the radiation condition at infinity, and the other is the fictitious bottom boundary element for the case of deep water. To validate those elements, numerical analyses are performed for several floating structures. Comparisons with the results from culler available solution methods show that the present method incorporating tile infinite and the fictitious bottom boundary elements gives good results.

Adaptive Mesh h-Refinement using Compatible Transition Elements in Plate Bending Problems (평판휨 문제에서 적합변이요소를 이용한 적응적 체눈 h-세분화)

  • In this study, an adaptive mesh h-refinement procedure was presented in plate bending problems. By introducing the transition elements for the procedure, same drawbacks due to the irregular nodes are eliminated which are generated in the consequence of local mesh refinement in common adaptive h-version performed by single type of quadrilateral elements. For the above objective, compatible 5-node through 7-node transition plate bending elements are developed by including variable number of midside nodes. Using the Zienkiewicn-Zhu error estimator, some numerical examples are presented to show the effectiveness of the adaptive h-refinement using the transition elements.

  • The near field is discretized into finite elements, and the far field into infinite elements. Closed form far-field solutions to three fundamental problems are used as the shape functions of the infinite elements. Such infinite elements are capable of transmitting all surface and body waves. An efficient scheme to integrate numerically the stiffness and mass matrices of these elements in presented. Results agree closely with those obtained by others.

Machine learning model for predicting ultimate capacity of FRP-reinforced normal strength concrete structural elements

  • Limited studies are available on the mathematical estimates of the compressive strength (CS) of glass fiber-embedded polymer (glass-FRP) compressive elements. The present study has endeavored to estimate the CS of glass-FRP normal strength concrete (NSTC) compression elements (glass-FRP-NSTC) employing two various methodologies; mathematical modeling and artificial neural networks (ANNs). The dataset of 288 glass-FRP-NSTC compression elements was constructed from the various testing investigations available in the literature. Diverse equations for CS of glass-FRP-NSTC compression elements suggested in the previous research studies were evaluated employing the constructed dataset to examine their correctness. A new mathematical equation for the CS of glass-FRP-NSTC compression elements was put forwarded employing the procedures of curve-fitting and general regression in MATLAB. The newly suggested ANN equation was calibrated for various hidden layers and neurons to secure the optimized estimates. The suggested equations reported a good correlation among themselves and presented precise estimates compared with the estimates of the equations available in the literature with R2= 0.769, and R2 =0.9702 for the mathematical and ANN equations, respectively. The statistical comparison of diverse factors for the estimates of the projected equations also authenticated their high correctness for apprehending the CS of glass-FRP-NSTC compression elements. A broad parametric examination employing the projected ANN equation was also performed to examine the effect of diverse factors of the glass-FRP-NSTC compression elements.

  • Because the structural elements used in the automobile, astronautic and ship industries are put in dynamic loading environments, much interest is given to the damping of the structural elements, as well as high flexural rigidity and strength per density. Therefore, in this study, the structural damping value of the aluminum honeycomb sandwich plate(AHCP) has been experimentally extracted, and directly applied to the finite element, for the dynamic analysis of the plate considering the structural damping. The analysis results of this theory was compared with the results of the actual modal analysis method. It was observable that the two analyses concurred, establishing the structural damping and analysis method of the AHSP.

Transverse vibration reduction at navigation bridge deck of the shuttle tanker using structural intensity analysis (진동 인텐시티 해석을 통한 원유운반선의 거주구 횡방향 진동 저감 연구)

  • Structural intensity has been mainly utilized to identify vibration energy flow in a vessel. In this paper, the structural intensity of a shuttle tanker subjected to H-moment of the main engine was calculated using a finite element model. From the analysis, it was found that the top-bracing elements, which support the main engine onto the hull structure to prevent the excessive transverse vibration of the main engine, play the role of the dominant path and sink for vibration energy flow from the main engine. Therefore, the structural intensity was controlled by the modification of stiffness and damping characteristics of the top-bracing elements. As a result, it is observed that the transverse vibration level at the center of navigation bridge deck decreased after the control of structural intensity.

  • This study deals with displacement analysis of anisotropic folded structures with triangular elements and quadrilateral elements. When folded plates are analyzed, triangular elements as well as quadrilateral elements are needed for conveniences of modelling. However, using triangular elements is not a simple problem. A simple formulation is presented which allows a quadrilateral element to degenerate into a triangular element. Therefore it can easily be used for computational simplicity and avoided complexities on mixed use of triangular element and quadrilateral element. In this paper, a high-order shear deformation theory using only Lagrangian interpolation functions and drilling degrees of freedom for folded plates are utilized for more accurate analysis. Especially, various results of anisotropic laminated and folded composite structures with triangular element and quadrilateral element show the structural behavior characteristics of them.

  • This research analyzed the contents of the elementary and middle school home economics textbooks within the 7th Curriculum from two theoretical Perspectives: structural functionalism and healthy family. A quantitative and in-depth content analysis was carried out with the five elements of family structure, family role, family relation, communication, dating and pregnancy. A healthy family Perspective was found in relation to the elements of family type and family role from the in-depth analysis of the elementary school practical arts textbook. In the middle school textbooks, the five elements reflected a strong structural-functionalist tendency. In both levels, the quantitative content analysis indicated that a structural-functionalist viewpoint was prevalent in the graphical components of the textbooks, including pictures, diagrams and graphs.

An algorithm to simulate the nonlinear behavior of RC 1D structural members under monotonic or cyclic combined loading

  • Interaction of lateral loading, combined with axial force needs to be determined with care in reinforced concrete (RC) one-dimensional structural members (1D SMs) such as beam-columns (BCs) and columns. RC 1D SMs under heavy axial loading are known to fail by brittle mode and small lateral displacements. In this paper, a macro element-based algorithm is proposed to analyze the RC 1D SMs under monotonic or cyclic combined loading. The 1D SMs are discretized into macro-elements (MEs) located between the critical sections and the inflection points. The critical sections are discretized into fixed rectangular finite elements (FRFE). The nonlinear behavior of confined and unconfined concretes and steel elements are considered in the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm has been validated by the results of experimental tests carried out on full-scale RC structural members. The evolution of ultimate strain at extreme compression fiber of a rectangular RC section for different orientations of lateral loading shows that the ultimate strain decreases with increasing the axial force. In the examined cases, this ultimate strain ranges from 0.0024 to 0.0038. Therefore, the 0.003 value given by ACI-318 code for ultimate strain, is not conservative and valid for the combined load cases with significant values of axial force (i.e. for the axial forces heavier than 70% of the ultimate axial force).

Optimization of structural elements of transport vehicles in order to reduce weight and fuel consumption

  • In global competition manufacturing companies have to produce modern, new constructions from advanced materials in order to increase competitiveness. The aim of my research was to develop a new composite cellular plate structure, which can be primarily used for structural elements of road, rail, water and air transport vehicles (e.g. vehicle bodies, ship floors). The new structure is novel and innovative, because all materials of the components of the newly developed structure are composites (laminated Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) deck plates with pultruded Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) stiffeners), furthermore combines the characteristics of sandwich and cellular plate structures. The material of the structure is much more advantageous than traditional steel materials, due mainly to its low density, resulting in weight savings, causing lower fuel consumption and less environmental damage. In the study the optimal construction of a given geometry of a structural element of a road truck trailer body was defined by single- and multi-objective optimization (minimal cost and weight). During the single-objective optimization the Flexible Tolerance Optimization method, while during the multi-objective optimization the Particle Swarm Optimization method were used. Seven design constraints were considered: maximum deflection of the structure, buckling of the composite plates, buckling of the stiffeners, stress in the composite plates, stress in the stiffeners, eigenfrequency of the structure, size constraint for design variables. It was confirmed that the developed structure can be used principally as structural elements of transport vehicles and unit load devices (containers) and can be applied also in building construction.
