Nonlinear analysis for seismic performance evaluation of existing building usually takes 4~5 times more than linear analysis based on KBC code. To obtain accurate results from the nonlinear analysis, there are a lot of things to be considered for nonlinear analysis modeling. For example, reinforcing layout, applied load and seismic details affect behavior of structural members for the existing building. Engineer-oriented computerized system was developed for engineers to evaluate effective seismic performance of existing buildings with abiding by seismic design principles. Using the engineer-oriented program, seismic performance evaluation of reinforced concrete building was performed. Nonlinear hinge properties were applied with real time multiple consideration such as section layout, section analysis result, applied load and performance levels. As a result, the building was evaluated to satisfy LS(Life Safety) performance level. A comparison between engineer-oriented and program-oriented results is presented to show how important the role of structural engineer is for seismic performance evaluation of existing buildings.
Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are one of the most ancient yet essential cofactors mediating various essential biological processes. In prokaryotes, Fe-S clusters are generated via several distinctive biogenesis mechanisms, among which the ISC (Iron-Sulfur Cluster) mechanism plays a house-keeping role to satisfy cellular needs for Fe-S clusters. The Escherichia coli ISC mechanism is maintained by several essential protein factors, whose structural characterization has been of great interest to reveal mechanistic details of the Fe-S cluster biogenesis mechanisms. In particular, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic approaches have contributed much to elucidate dynamic features not only in the structural states of the protein components but also in the interaction between them. The present minireview discusses recent advances in elucidating structural features of IscU, the key player in the E. coli ISC mechanism. IscU accommodates exceptional structural flexibility for its versatile activities, for which NMR spectroscopy was particularly successful. We expect that understanding to the structural diversity of IscU provides critical insight to appreciate functional versatility of the Fe-S cluster biogenesis mechanism.
This paper presents a thorough investigation into the structural performance of cold-formed steel column bases using double lipped C sections with bolted moment connections. A total of four column base tests with different connection configurations were carried out, and it was found that section failure under combined bending and shear was always critical. Moreover, the proposed column bases were demonstrated to be structurally efficient attaining moment resistances close to those of the connected sections. In order to examine the structural behaviour of the column base connections, a finite element model was established using shell and spring elements to model the sections and the bolted fastenings respectively. Both material and geometrical non-linearities were incorporated, and comparison between the test and the numerical results was presented in details. The design rules originally developed for bolted moment connections between lapped Z sections were adopted and re-formulated for the design of column base connections after careful calibration against the test data. Comparison on co-existing moments and shear forces at the critical cross-sections of the column bases was fully presented. It was shown that the proposed design and analysis method was structurally adequate to predict the failure loads under combined bending and shear for column bases with similar connection configurations.

In evaluating explosion-protection capacity, safety distance is broadly accepted as the distance at which detonation of a given explosive causes acceptable structural damage. Safety distance can be calculated based on structural response under blast loading and damage criteria. For the applicability of the safety distance, the minimum required stand-off distance should be given when the explosive size is assumed. However, because of the nature of structures, structural details and material characteristics differ, which requires sensitivity analysis of the safety distance. This study examines the safety-distance sensitivity from structural and material property variations. For the safety-distance calculation, a blast analysis module based on the Kingery and Bulmash formula, a structural response module based on a Single Degree of Freedom model, and damage criteria based on a support rotation angle were prepared. Sensitivity analysis was conducted for the Reinforced Concrete one-way slab with different thicknesses, reinforcement ratios, reinforcement yield strengths, and concrete compressive strengths. It was shown that slab thickness has the most significant influence on both inertial force and flexure resistance, but the compressive strength of the concrete is not relevant.

In the framework of the SPEAR (Seismic PErformance Assessment and Rehabilitation) research Project, an under-designed three storey RC frame structure, designed to sustain only gravity loads, was subjected, in three different configurations 'as-built', Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) retrofitted and rehabilitated by reinforced concrete (RC) jacketing, to a series of bi-directional pseudodynamic (PsD) tests under different values of peak ground acceleration (PGA) (from a minimum of 0.20g to a maximum of 0.30g). The seismic deficiencies exhibited by the 'as-built' structure after the test at PGA level of 0.20g were confirmed by a post - test assessment of the structural seismic capacity performed by a nonlinear static pushover analysis implemented on the structure lumped plasticity model. To improve the seismic performance of the 'as-built' structure', two rehabilitation interventions by using either FRP laminates or RC jacketing were designed. Assumptions for the analytical modeling, design criteria and calculation procedures along with local and global intervention measures and their installation details are herein presented and discussed. Nonlinear static pushover analyses for the assessment of the theoretical seismic capacity of the structure in each retrofitted configuration were performed and compared with the experimental outcomes.

As the half-depth precast concrete decks are increasingly applied to the construction sites, researches on connection details have been increased. For design of concrete bridge deck with half-depth precast panels, it is required to provide appropriate details of transverse loop joints between panels. In this paper, the structural performance of precast decks was evaluated to investigate continuity of the proposed loop joint details. From the results, the validity of the joints for the continuity of deck was observed in the aspect of flexural strength and crack control. The ultimate strength increased 1.52 times as the reinforcement spacing in the joint was reduced. In terms of crack control, direct crack width calculation for the loop joint showed appropriate results comparing with measured crack width.

Steel frame-type retaining walls(SFRW) are constructed by on site bolting of prefabricated steel frames and internal filling of materials such as rocks with the size of 150-300mm. Easy & fast construction, superior drainage performance and structural performance to rigorous site conditions are some of the merits of applying the SFRW to various construction sites. After the development of the structural details, a test construction of SFRW, with the height of 6m and 30m in length, was carried out at an apartment site. After completion, several months of monitoring was carried out on the structure to check displacement, tilting, settlement, soil pressures and drainage characteristics. The results of the structural behavior of SFRW along with its construction methods are presented in the paper.
An expert system for the preliminary design of the building structures, which is most important in the design stages, is modeled in this paper. Considering various factors such as structural safety, constructability, and architectural spacing as well as material cost, this expert system serves as a starting point for the building details.
Before incorporating the earthquake-resistance design in design standard (1988) in South Korea, most of existing residential buildings were built without having lateral resistance capacity in addition to their structural peculiarity, such as exterior stair ways, exterior elevator room. For these reasons, the demands on retrofitting research for existing buildings arise recently and many retrofitting methods are proposed. These tasks are important to reduce the enormous economic loss and environmental issues. As the main purpose, this study was intended to examine the performance improvement in terms of ductility and strength in the wake of retrofitting and to suggest retrofitting details.
