Computer-based analysis tools for forensic assessment of reinforced concrete structures are presented. The analysis tools, mostly in the form of nonlinear finite element procedures, are based on the concepts and formulations of the Modified Compression Field Theory. Relevant details regarding their formulation are provided. Development of realistic constitutive models and corroboration of the analysis procedures, through comprehensive experimental programs, are discussed. Also presented are graphics-based pre- and post-processors, which are of significant aid in structural modeling, input of data, and interpretation of analysis results. The details and results of a case study, illustrating the application and value of such analytical tools, are also discussed.
An uncoupled computational model for analyzing the hygrothermal dynamic response of composite laminates has been developed. The constitutive equations, expressed in an integral form, and involving relaxation moduli are adopted, to describe the non-aging hygrothermorheologically simple materials. A Prony series represents the relaxation moduli is exploited in order to derive a recursive relationship, and thereby eliminate the storage problem that arises when dealing with material possessing memory. The problem is formulated in a descritized variational form. Mindlin and higher order finite elements are employed for spatial descretization, while the Newmark average acceleration scheme is exploited for temporal descritization. The adopted recursive formula uses only the details of the previous event to compute the details of the current one. Numerical results of the displacement fields of both thin and thick viscoelastic laminates problems are discussed to show up the effectiveness of Mindlin and higher-order shear theories.

There is a growing need of seismic retrofit of existing non-seismically designed structures in Korea after the 2016 Gyeongju and 2017 Pohang earthquakes, especially school buildings which experienced extensive damage during those two earthquakes. To this end, a steel multi-slit damper (MSD) was developed in this research which can be installed inside of partition walls of school buildings. Full-scale two-story RC frames were tested with and without the proposed dampers. The frames had structural details similar to school buildings constructed in the 1980s in Korea. The details of the experiments were described in detail, and the test results were validated using the analysis model. The developed seismic retrofit strategy was applied to a case study school building structure, and its seismic performance was evaluated before and after retrofit using the MSD. The results show that the developed retrofit strategy can improve the seismic performance of the structure to satisfy a given target performance level.
Many image edge details are easily lost in the image denoising process, and the smooth image regions are prone to produce jagged. In this paper, we propose a wavelet-based image global k- singular value decomposition variational method to remove image noise. A layer of wavelet decomposition is applied to the noisy image first. Then, the image global k-singular value decomposition (IGK-SVD) method is used to remove the random noise of low-frequency components. Furthermore, a constructed variational denoising method (VDM) removes the random noise in the high-frequency component. Finally, the denoised image is obtained by wavelet reconstruction. The experimental results show that the proposed method's peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) value is higher than other methods, and its structural similarity (SSIM) value is closer to one, indicating that the proposed method can effectively suppress image noise while retaining more image edge details. The denoised image has better denoising effects.

In this study, the displacement dependence, strength, and energy dissipation capacity of the steel rod damper were evaluated. The test variables are the number of steel rod dampers and the lateral deformation prevention details. From test results, it was evaluated that the displacement dependence conditions in the structural design code were satisfied. The maximum strength and energy dissipation capacity increased linearly as the number of steel rod increased. In addition, the maximum strength and energy dissipation capacity were evaluated by more than 20 times increased by using of the lateral deformation prevention details.

The application of the diagrid structural system has increased of late, but cyclic loadings such as winds and earthquakes cannot be fully understood through only an analytical study due to the difficulty of considering its welding property. In this study, diagrid nodes that had been scaled down to 1/5 of their full sizes were tested to find out their structural behavior under seismic or wind loads. Four specimens were used with five parameters, including the welding method and the design details. Cyclic loading tests were carried out, where a tensile load was applied to one brace member and a compression load to the other. The major failure modes in the tests were only failure of bending with tensile stress and tension failure. The welding method and the design details had no effect on the initial stiffness and yielding stress but play a significant role in the failure mode and energy dissipation, respectively.
This study was evaluated in the performance of the connection according to the details of the concrete casing segment in the prestressed composite girder by fabricating and testing specimens with different segments. A total of four comparative specimens were fabricated by using the variables of general composite girders, reinforcement or non-reinforcement, and details of reinforcing bars in the segments so as to evaluate the structural behavior of steel girders. In addition, the possibility of non-cracking grade design of segmented composite girders as well as the effects of stiffness and strength according to the loop connection types after cracking were analyzed, and the appropriateness of the crack width control both the embedded steel plate and the concrete surface were evaluated.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the structural performance of doubly reinforced composite beams with steel fiber concretes and steel angles. For this purpose, total 6 specimens whose variables are shear span-to-depth ratio, existence of shear reinforcement, and shear reinforcement details, are made and tested. All specimens are constructed of steel fiber concretes with specified compressive strength of 30 MPa and steel fiber volumn content of 1%. From the experimental results, structural performance of doubly reinforced composite beams are evaluated in terms of strength, stiffness, ductility, and energy absorbing capacity. For the better structural performance, it is recommended that the composite beam is designed with diagonal shear reinforcement.

Present research target to develop the procedure of long-term fatigue analysis of the structural details near the upper rolling chock of IMO type B tank by using the time domain modal analysis technique where both the contact and friction behavior can be accurately simulated. In order to perform the time domain analysis focused on the contact and friction, the entire model of the hull and tank was condensed with DOF reduction technique, which is obtained by transforming the global finite element model into its quasi-static modal coordinate. Modal analysis using the quasi-static deformation modes is chosen as a cost effective time domain simulation method and this is based on the fact that the structural response of the tank is quasi-static. Based on the developed cost effective time domain simulation method, the long-term fatigue analysis procedure for the structural details near the rolling chock and key of independent type tank is targeted to be established. The developed fatigue assessment procedure takes into account, wave induced stress and both contact and friction induced stress without loss of accuracy.

This paper presents analytical methodologies for remaining life prediction of plain concrete structural components considering tension softening and size effects. Non-linear fracture mechanics principles (NLFM) have been used for crack growth analysis and remaining life prediction. Various tension softening models such as linear, bi-linear, tri-linear, exponential and power curve have been presented with appropriate expressions. Size effect has been accounted for by modifying the Paris law, leading to a size adjusted Paris law, which gives crack length increment per cycle as a power function of the amplitude of a size adjusted stress intensity factor (SIF). Details of tension softening effects and size effect in the computation of SIF and remaining life prediction have been presented. Numerical studies have been conducted on three point bending concrete beams under constant amplitude loading. The predicted remaining life values with the combination of tension softening & size effects are in close agreement with the corresponding experimental values available in the literature for all the tension softening models.
