  • Two phase simulated annealing algorithm is presented as a structural optimization technique and applied to minimum weight design of space trusses subjected to stress and displacement constraints under multiple loading conditions. Univariate searching algorithm is adopted for automatic selection of initial values of design variables for SA algorithm. The proper values of cooling factors and reasonable stopping criteria for optimum design of space truss structures are proposed to enhance the performance of optimization process. Optimum weights and design solutions are presented for two well-blown example structures and compared with those reported in the literature.

  • In this paper, we develop continuum-based design sensitivity analysis (DSA) methods using both direct differential method (DDM) and adjoint variable method (AVM) for non-shape design problems. The developed DSA method is further utilized for the topology design optimization of 3-dimensional structures. In numerical examples, the analytical DSA results are verified using finite difference ones. The topology optimization method yields very reasonable results in physical point of view.

  • The objective of this paper is to suggest the technique of program to perform structural optimization design after reliability analysis to consider the uncertainties of structural reponses. AFOSM method is used for reliability analysis then, structural optimization design is developed for 10-bar truss and 3 span 10 stories planar frame model is subject to reliability indices and probability of failure by reliability analysis. SQP method is used for optimization design method, this method has many attractions. As a result of analyzing with having and not having constraints and uncertainty, the minimum weight of truss and planar frame increased respectively 20.92% and average 8.08%.

  • It is difficult to have the existing structural optimization using coupled field analysis from CFD to structure analysis when the structure is influenced of fluid. Therefore in an initial model of this study after doing parameter design from the background of shape using topology optimization. and it is making a approximation formula using by the CFD-structure coupled-field analysis and design of experiment. By using this result, we conducted multi-objective optimization. We could confirm efficiency of stochastic method applicable in the scene of structure reliability design to be needed multi-objective optimization. And we presented a way of design that could overcome the time and space restriction in structural design such as the butterfly valve with the less experiment.

  • The results of optimum design by the deterministic approach adopted in the current design codes depend upon the safety levels of the applied code. But, it is now generally recognized that structural problems are nondeterministic and, consequently, that engineering optimum design must cope with uncertainties. Therefore, it is not an overstatement to affirm that the combination of reliability-based design procedures and optimization techniques is the only means of providing a powerful tool to obtain a practical optimum design solution. In the paper, reliability based optimum design procedure as a rational approach to optimum structural design is presented. The design constraints are formulated based on the ASD, LRFD and reliability theories. The reliability analysis is based on an advanced first-order second moment approach. Uncertainties in the structural strength and loading due to inherent variability as well as modeling and prediction errors are included in failure due to combined bending and shear. For the realistic reliability-based optimization of continuous steel box girder bridges, interactive non-linear limit state model is formulated based on the von Mises's combined stress yield criterion. Comparative results are presented when the ASD criteria are used for the optimum design of a structure under reliability constraints. In addition, this study comparatively shows the results of the optimum design for various criteria of design codes.

  • In this paper, using an adjoint variable method, we develop a design sensitivity analysis(DSA) method applicable to heat conduction problems in steady state. Also, a topology design optimization method is developed using the developed DSA method. Design sensitivity expressions with respect to the thermal conductivity are derived. Since the already factorized system matrix is utilized to obtain the adjoint solution, the cost for the sensitivity computation is trivial. For the topology design optimization, the design variables are parameterized into normalized bulk material densities. The objective function and constraint are the thermal compliance of structures and allowable material volume respectively. Through several numerical examples, the developed DSA method is verified to yield very accurate sensitivity results compared with finite difference ones, requiring less than 0.25% of CPU time for the finite differencing. Also, the topology optimization yields physical meaningful results.

  • Recently, the importance of multi-objective optimization techniques and stochastic search methods is increasing. The stochastic search methods have the concepts of the survival of the fittest and natural selection such as genetic algorithms(GA), simulated annealing(SA) and evolution strategies (ES). As many accidents of oil tankers cause marine pollution, oil tankers of double hull or mid deck structure are being built to minimize the marine pollution. For the improvement of oil tanker design technique, an efficient optimization technique is proposed in this study. Multi-objective optimization problem of weight and cost of double hull and mid deck tanker is formulated. Discrete design variables are used considering real manufacturing, and the concept of relative production cost is also introduced. The ES method is used as an optimization technique, and the ES algorithm was developed to generate a more efficient Pareto optimal set.

  • ESO(Evolutionary Structural Optimization) method is known that elements involved low stress value are removed from the previous model or that elements are added around elements involved high stress level on it and then the optimized model is obtained with required weight. Rejection ratio/addition ratio and evolutionary ratio are predefined and elements having lower/higher stress than reference stress, which average Mises stress on edge elements times rejection ratio, are deleted/added. In this study, when the plate having a cutout is subjected various in-plane load, a cutout shape is optimized using ESO method. ANSYS is used to analyse a finite element model and optimization procedure is made by APDL (ANSYS Parametric Design Language). ESO method is useful in rather than a complex structure optimization as well as a cutout shape optimization.

  • More often a commercial package for the structural analysis is necessary in the structural optimum design. In this case the task of combining the package with an optimization program must be required, hut it is not so simple because interchanging some data between them is difficult. Sequential approximate optimization is currently used as a natural way to overcome the hard task. If sequential approximate optimization has wide side constraints that the lower limit of design variables is very small and their upper limit is very large, it is not so easy to obtain approximated functions accurately for the whole design domain. This paper proposes a sequential design domain method, which is very useful to carry out sequential approximate optimization in this case. In this paper, the response surface methodology is used to obtain approximated functions and the orthogonal array is used for design of experiments. The sequential approximate optimization of 3-bar and 10-bar trusses is demonstrated to verify the reliability of the sequential design domain method.

  • Among the ULSAB methods for the lightweight automobile body, Tailor Welded Blank(TWB) is adopted and the design process is developed for the existing component. Topology optimization conducted to find the distribution of the variable thickness. The number of parts and the welding lines are determined from it. In the detail design, size optimization is carried out to find the optimum thickness of each part and then, the final parting lines are tuned by shape optimization. A commercial optimization software GENESIS is utilized for the optimization processes.
