  • A system for diagnosing surface defects of long and large pipe inner overlay welds, 1m in diameter and 6m in length, was developed using a Liquid Penetrant Test (PT). First, CATIA was used to model all major units and PT machines in 3-dimensions. They were used for structural strength analysis and strain analysis, and to check the motion interference phenomenon of each unit to produce two-dimensional production drawings. Structural strength analysis and deformation analysis using the ANSYS results in a maximum equivalent stress of 44.901 MPa, which is less than the yield tensile strength of SS400 (200 MPa), a material of the PT Machine. An examination of the performance of the developed equipment revealed a maximum travel speed of 7.2 m/min., maximum rotational speed of 9 rpm, repeatable position accuracy of 1.2 mm, and inspection speed of $1.65m^2/min$. The results of the automatic PT-inspection system developed to check for surface defects, such as cracks, porosity, and undercut, were in accordance with the method of ASME SEC. V&VIII. In addition, the results of corrosion testing of the overlay weld layer in accordance with the ferric chloride fitting test by the method of ASME G48-11 indicated that the weight loss was $0.3g/m^2$, and met the specifications. Furthermore, the chemical composition of the overlay welds was analyzed according to the method described in ASTM A375-14, and all components met the specifications.

  • This study suggested comprehensive structural characterization methods for the commercial blue light emitting diodes(LEDs). By using the Z-contrast intensity profile of Cs-corrected high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscope(HAADF-STEM) images from a commercial lateral GaN-based blue light emitting diode, we obtained important structural information on the epilayer structure of the LED, which would have been difficult to obtain by conventional analysis. This method was simple but very powerful to obtain structural and chemical information on epi-structures in a nanometer-scale resolution. One of the examples was that we could determine whether the barrier in the multi-quantum well(MQW) was GaN or InGaN. Plan-view TEM observations were performed from the commercial blue LED to characterize the threading dislocations(TDs) and the related V-pit defects. Each TD observed in the region with the total LED epilayer structure including the MQW showed V-pit defects for almost of TDs independent of the TD types: edge-, screw-, mixed TDs. The total TD density from the region with the total LED epilayer structure including the MQW was about $3.6{\times}10^8cm^{-2}$ with a relative ratio of Edge- : Screw- :Mixed-TD portion as 80%: 7%: 13%. However, in the mesa-etched region without the MQW total TD density was about $2.5{\times}10^8cm^{-2}$ with a relative ratio of Edge- : Screw- :Mixed-TD portion of 86%: 5%: 9 %. The higher TD density in the total LED epilayer structure implied new generation of TDs mostly from the MQW region.

  • Structural defects such as cracks are the source of local flexibilities and cause deficiencies in structural resistance. In the engineering constructions, structural elements sometimes are subjected to axial loading. Therefore, besides crack ratios and locations, influence of applied load on the stability and dynamical characteristics should also be explored. This study offers a numerical technique for the vibration and stability analysis of axially loaded cracked beams. The model merges finite element and component mode synthesis methods. Initially, stability analysis is completed and then dynamical characteristics of beams are found. Very good conformities between outcomes of the current study and those in literature, give the confidence that proposed method is reliable and effective.

  • Structures obtained with a direct boning of two FZ silicon wafers joined in such a way that a smooth surface of one wafer was attached to the grooved surface of the other were studied. A square net of grooves was made with a conventional photo lithography process. After high temperature annealing the appearance of voids and the rearrangement of structural defects were observed with X-ray diffraction topography techniques. It was shown that the formation of void free grooved boundaries was feasible. In the cases when particulate contamination was prevented, the voids appeared in the grooved structures could be eliminated with annealing. Since it was found that the flattening was accompanied with plastic deformation, this deformation was suggested to be intensively involved in the process of void removal. A model was proposed explaining the interaction between the structural defects resulted in "a dissolution" of cavities. The described processes may occur in grooved as well as in smooth structures, but there are the former that allow to manage air traps and undesirable excess of dislocation density. Grooves can be paths for air leave. According to the established mechanisms, if not outdone, the dislocations form local defect arrangements at the grooves permitting the substantial reduction in defect density over the remainder of the interfacial area.

  • Existing surface defects in structural members often act as sites of fatigue crack initiation, and if undetected, these cracks may grow through the thickness of the member, leading to catastrophic failure of the structure. Thus, in-service monitoring of fatigue cracks through reliable and effective nondestructive techniques is an important ingredient in the leak-before-break (LBB) design and safe operation of defects critical structures. An advanced, waveform-based, acoustic emission (AE) technique has been used in this paper to study the characteristics of the signals emanating from the initiation, growth and through-the -thickness penetration of surface fatigue crack in a 6061 aluminum plate. The goal of this experimental study is to determine whether the evolution of the fatigue crocks could be identified from the properties of the waveforms produced during the tests. The AE waveform signals detected at different stages of crack growth was found to have different temporal and spectral characteristics. The data analysis technique presented here can be applied to real-time monitoring of the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks in structural components.

  • Recently Al alloys are being used gradually for structural materials of transports. In welding of Al alloys used for transports, good weldabilities as well as adequate mechanical properties of the welds should be ensured as structural materials. In this study, the welds formation, macro and microstructural characteristics, generation of defects and hardness distribution in welds of Al alloys of 5083, 6N01 and 7N01 by DCSP- and AC-GTA welding process, were investigated. The deeper penetration was obtained in all welds of the alloys by DCSP-GTAW with He gas, compared with those by using AC-GTAW. The 6N01 alloy showed high susceptibilities to solidification cracking in weld metal and liquation cracking in HAZ of the welding beads of both DCSP- and AC-GTAW process. The cracking ratio of 6N01 alloy was increased with increasing of welding current. The porosity ratios in weld metal of all alloys used were extremely low including all welding conditions of DCSP-GTAW. However, in AC-GTAW process, the porosity ratios of the welds using Ar gas showed much higher values than those using He gas.

  • The utilizations of ceramics in the modern industries are increasing due to the desirable combinations of electrical, mechanical and physical properties found in ceramics. Ceramic materials are brittle, hard, strong in compression, weak in shearing and tension which is prone to affect the defects such as scratch, crack and breakage during the machining. Generally, the defects of the ceramic machining are generated from the structural vibrations of the machine. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of a machining center for ceramic machining were investigated to analyze the structural vibrations for the improved stability. Frequency response test and computer simulation have been conducted for the analysis and the design improvement. The improved design is suggested to suppress vibrations for the higher stability of the machine and further to reduce vibrations. And the result shows that simple design alterations without any change of major parts of the machine can reduce the vibration of the machine effectively.

  • Pipes are widely used in various industries such as automobile, anti-vibration devices, factories and ship building. Chamfering is one of the most critical processes in pipe manufacturing which removes burrs of the pipes for better surface quality. In most cases, the defects of the chamfered surface are originated from the structural vibrations of the chamfering machine. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of a chamfering machine have been analyzed though the experiment and the computer simulation. And the effects of the design parameters affecting the stability of the machine have been investigated to stabilize the machine structure and further to reduce structural vibrations. The result shows that design alterations to stabilize the machine can suppress the defects of the machined surface as well as the vibrations during chamfering.
