  • The bridge type of steel concrete composite rahmen or pre-flex has been applied where a lower depth girder is required due to vertical clearance restrictions caused by the crossing of rivers and roads. On the other hand, because these types are not only complicated to manufacture and construct, but also expensive, void slab bridges may be an alternative. In this study, prefabricated PSC-I shape girder was used to make a void slab and all procedures for bridge development, such as analysis, design, fabrication, and real-scale test, were included in the scope of research. The results of this study will provide sufficient background data to be applied to the field and the structural safety has been verified through experiments.

  • A-pillar is closely related to safety for the purpose of protecting the bodies of passengers by mitigating the impact that may be caused by the vehicle being overturned while driving. Therefore, the A-pillar should protect these parts from a variety of dynamic loads. This study result is thought to contribute for the strength and durability of A-pillar by designing two types of parts before making this product and analyzing the product which thickness is adjusted for the light weight of vehicle. If this study result is practically applied to the parts of A-pillar in a car, it is considered that the damage can be protected by the durability verification of design. By utilizing the data of analysis and design on the strength and durability of automotive A-pillar in this study, the esthetic sense can be given by being grafted onto the real automotive part.

  • Frequent urban floods affect the human safety and economic properties due to a lack of the capacity of drainage system and the increased frequency of torrential rainfall. The drainage system has played an important role in flooding control, so it is necessary to establish the effective countermeasures considering the connection between drainage system and surface flow. To consider the connection, we selected SWMM5 model for analyzing transportation capacity of drainage system and FLUMEN model for calculating inundation depth and time variation of inundation area. First, Thiessen method is used to delineate the sub-catchments effectively base on drainage network data in SWMM5. Then, the output data of SWMM5, hydrograph of each manhole, were used to simulate FLUMEN to obtain inundation depth and time variation of inundation area. The proposed method is applied to Sadang area for the event occurred in $27^{th}$ of July, 2011. A total of 11 manholes, we could check the overflow from the manholes during that event as a result of the SWMM5 simulation. After that, FLUMEN was utilized to simulate overland flow using the overflow discharge to calculate inundation depth and area on ground surface. The simulated results showed reasonable agreements with observed data. Through the simulations, we confirmed that the main reason of the inundation was the insufficient transportation capacities of drainage system. Therefore cooperation of both models can be used for not only estimating inundation damages in urban areas but also for providing the theoretical supports of the urban network reconstruction. As a future works, it is recommended to decide optimized pipe diameters for efficient urban inundation simulations.

  • A submerged floating railway is an innovative tunnel infrastructure passing through the deep sea independent of wave and wind so that high speed trains can run on it. It doesn't depend on water depth and is cost effective due to modular construction on land. The construction period can be reduced drastically. This paper introduces the concept design of a submerged floating railway, and for securing safety, proposes a method to analyze the structural behavior of the body in case of collision with a submarine. The theory of a beam with an elastic foundation was used to calculate the equivalent mass of the body so that the perfect elastic collision could be applied to calculate the collision velocity. The maximum deformation and bending moment was analyzed based on energy conservation. To verify the results, a collision analysis using a finite element analysis code was made. Comparing the results confirmed that this simplified collision analysis method gives enough accurate deformation and bending moment to be used for actual estimation in the initial design stage.

  • A number of tangible cultural properties have been left to suffering damage without any scientific conservation or maintenance. We conducted nondestructive geophysical explorations around the Western pagoda of the Iksan Mireuksa Temple for the purpose of preparing the counterplan of its conservation and maintenance and of utilizing the geophysical information for the design of repair. Geophysical image of the shallow subsurface around the construct resulting from electric resistivity, seismic refraction, and GPR methods carried out along 6 lines in the site was used to investigate the relationship between the foundation characteristics and the structural safety. Tilting of the pagoda southwest towards seems to result from the low resistivity zones found in the southwestern part. The GPR and seismic surveys revealed a boundary at depth of 3.3~3.5m dividing into two layers, compacted overlaid soil and the original ground. The boundary appears to dip southwest. The artificial layer as a foundation does not covers as much as the bottom area of the pagoda. This top soil dipping southwest seems to result in tilting of foundation southwestward towards. Our geophysical result suggests ground reinforcement in the western part of the survey area for the conservation of the construct.

  • To ensure that fire induced collapse of a building is prevented it is important to understand the sequence of events that can lead to this event. In this paper, the initiation of collapse mechanisms of generic a multi-storey steel frame subjected to vertical and horizontal travelling fires are analysed computationally by tracking the formation of plastic hinges in the frame and generation of fire induced loads. Both uniform and travelling fires are considered. In total 58 different cases are analysed using finite element software LS-DYNA. For the frame examined with a simple and generic structural arrangement and higher applied fire protection to the columns, the results indicate that collapse mechanisms for singe floor and multiple floor fires can be each split into two main groups. For single floor fires (taking place in the upper floors of the frame (Group S1)), collapse is initiated by the pull-in of external columns when heated beams in end bays go into catenary action. For single floor fires occurring on the lower floors(Group S2), failure is initiated (i.e. ultimate strain of the material is exceeded) after the local beam collapse. Failure in both groups for single floor fires is governed by the generation of high loads due to restrained thermal expansion and the loss of material strength. For multiple floor fires with a low number of fire floors (1 to 3) - Group M1, failure is dominated by the loss of material strength and collapse is mainly initiated by the pull-in of external columns. For the cases with a larger number of fire floors (5 to 10) - Group M2, failure is dominated by thermal expansion and collapse is mainly initiated by swaying of the frame to the side of fire origin. The results show that for the investigated frame initiation of collapse mechanisms are affected by the fire type, the number of fire floors, and the location of the fire floor. The findings of this study could be of use to designers of buildings when developing fire protection strategies for steel framed buildings where the potential for a multifloor fire exists.

  • Carbon-encapsulated Ni catalysts are synthesized by an electrical explosion of wires (EEW) method and applied for CO2 methanation. We find that the presence of carbon shell on Ni nanoparticles as catalyst can positively affect CO2 methanation reaction. Ni@5C that is produced under 5 % CH4 partial pressure in Ar gas has highest conversions of 68 % at 350 ℃ and 70 % at 400 ℃, which are 73 and 75 % of the thermodynamic equilibrium conversion, respectively. The catalyst of Ni@10C with thicker carbon layer shows much reduced activity. The EEW-produced Ni catalysts with low specific surface area outperform Ni catalysts with high surface area synthesized by solution-based precipitation methods. Our finding in this study shows the possibility of utilizing carbon-encapsulated metal catalysts for heterogeneous catalysis reaction including CO2 methanation. Furthermore, EEW, which is a highly promising method for massive production of metal nanoparticles, can be applied for various catalysis system, requiring scaled-up synthesis of catalysts.

  • The application of an adhesive calcium carbonate-based hybrid insulation board with quasi-combustibility in the external thermal insulation composite system(ETICS) ensures effective thermal performance and fire safety. This study aimed to conduct a mechanical test of the quasi-non-combustible hybrid insulation board as well as its constituent materials to obtain the basic data for the structural design of the adhesive ETICS. Test specimens were fabricated based on domestic and foreign test standards to examine and evaluate their tensile, compressive, flexural, and shear strengths. The strength characteristics of the quasi-non-combustible hybrid insulation board were identified from the test results, which verified that the minimum required physical properties suggested by the current KS M ISO 4898 were met. Furthermore, the quasi-non-combustible ETICS used in this study was found to be suitable for use as an external insulation system for walls unless subjected to continuous gravity load, such as a heavy exterior finish.

  • Lead alloy is used as coolant in Lead-based cooled Fast Reactor (LFR). The natural characteristics of lead alloy are combined with the simple structural design of LFR. This constitutes the inherent safety characteristics of LFR. The main work of this paper is to take the main coolant pump (MCP) in the lead-cooled fast reactor (LFR) as the research object, and to study the flow pattern distribution of the internal flow field under the reverse rotation pump condition, the reverse rotation positive-flow braking condition and the reverse rotation negative-flow braking condition. In this paper, the double-outlet volute type and the space guide vane are selected as the potential designs of the CLEAR-I MCP. In this paper, the CFD method is used to study the potential reverse accident of the MCP. It is found that the highest flow velocity in the impeller appears at the impeller outlet, and the Q-H curves of the two design programs basically coincide. The space guide vane type MCP has better hydraulic performance under the reverse rotation positive-flow condition, the Q-H curves of the two designs gradually separate with increasing flow rate, and the maximum flow velocity inside the space guide vane type MCP is obviously lower than that of the double-outlet volute type. For the reverse rotation test of MCP, only the condition of the forward rotating pump of the main coolant pump is tested and verified. For the simulation of the MCP in LBE medium, it proved that the turbulence model and basic settings selected in the simulation are reliable.

  • In this study 24 power transmission towers were selected by considering various variables such as power transmission capacity, height and structural type to evaluate their seismic performance using the standard design response spectrum recently announced by the government. In addition, the stresses and sectional forces generated by the current design wind loads and revised seismic ones were compared to review the effects on the design of power transmission towers when the government-required seismic standards were raised. The results of seismic performance evaluation for the target power transmission towers showed that they had seismic capacity of 0.31~0.91g, and that they met the level of the earthquake-resistant special grade, which is the 2,400-year earthquake return periods and secured seismic safety. Further, the sectional forces caused by earthquakes in the towers were 33~82.5% of the ones due to wind loads, and it was also confirmed that the design wind loads were more dominant than design earthquake ones under the elevated seismic standards.
