Recent technological developments in machine tools have been focused on high speed, low vibration machining and high precision machining. And the concern with multi-functional machining has been increased for the last several years. Multi-tasking machines are widely used in machine tool industries. Laser multi-tasking machine has been developed for high precision and fewer vibration machining. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of structural reinforcement on Laser multi-tasking machine which is comprehensively combined turning center and laser machine. Up to date, for the structural stability evaluation of a multi-tasking machine, the analysis model has been considered only the weight of the upper parts. The positions of upper parts on multi-tasking machine have not been considered in the model. So, the results of the present FE model have revealed some difference with measurement data in case of multi-tasking machine. Design of the machine and structural analysis is carried out by FEM simulation using the commercial software CATIA V5. In the result of the structural analysis, effectiveness of reinforcement of the bed was confirmed.
Reliability-based design approaches are needed for cylindrical shell structure whose design and operational experiences are few and which are subjected to external loads of random loads. In designing new type of structure, it is very difficult to evaluate the safety factors due to lack of previous design data and operational experience. To solve the above mentioned problem, much attention is being focussed on rational reliability based design approaches. This paper deals with weight-optional reliability-based design of cylindrical shell structure subjected to structural reliability constraints taking into account of the effect of local buckling and interactive behavior between local and global buckling. Present mentioned is compared with the exiting optional design method based only on safety factors. Numerical simulation reveals that the present method leads to lighter structure (4% reduction in weight compared to the existing optimal design) with the same reliability index. For larger structures with more number of structural members and possible failure modes, the present W0RBD procedure will be an efficient tool in designing cost-effective rationalized economic design.
Reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) is a powerful tool for design optimization when considering probabilistic characteristics of design variables. However, it is often computationally intensive because of the coupling of reliability analysis and cost minimization. In this study, the concept of reliability mapping function is defined based on the relationship between the reliability index obtained by using the mean value first order reliability method and the failure probability obtained by using an improved response surface method. Double-loop involved in the classical RBDO can be converted into single-loop by using the reliability mapping function. Since the computational effort of the mean value first order reliability method is minimal, RBDO by using reliability mapping functions should be highly efficient. Engineering examples are given to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method. Numerical results indicated that the proposed method has the similar accuracy as Monte Carlo simulation, and it can obviously reduce the computational effort.
In this paper, an integrated S/W system from CAD to optimal design has been suggested and an application to a precision machine tool structure shown. The integrated system is so designed to reduce manual interfacing effort. An object-oriented programming language is used for combining 3-D CAD program, FEM and optimal design tools. In this system parametric modelling technique is applied and users can get the optimum design iteratively without much user intervention. The CAD model is automatically updated when the design parameters are transferred back to the CAD program. Not only design time can be dramatically reduced but unnecessary operation errors avoided by the integration.

In this paper, a multi-step optimization using a G.A.(Genetic Algorithm) with variable penalty function is introduced to the structural design optimization of a high speed machining center. The design problem, in this case, is to find out the best cross-section shapes and dimensions of structural members which minimize the static compliance, the dynamic compliance, and the weight of the machine structure simultaneously. The first step is the cross-section shape optimization, in which only the section members are selected to survive whose cross-section area have above a critical value. The second step is a static design optimization, in which the static compliance and the weight of the machine structure are minimized under some dimensional constraints and deflection limits. The third step is a dynamic design optimization, where the dynamic compliance and the structure weight are minimized under the same constraints as those of the second step. The proposed design optimization method was successful applied to the machining center structural design optimization. As a result, static and dynamic compliances were reduced to 16% and 53% respectively from the initial design, while the weight of the structure are also reduced slightly.
This paper presents an integrated wind-induced dynamic analysis and computer-based design optimization technique for minimizing the structural cost of general tall buildings subject to static and dynamic serviceability design criteria. Once the wind-induced dynamic response of a tall building structure is accurately determined and the optimal serviceability design problem is explicitly formulated, a rigorously derived Optimality Criteria (OC) method is to be developed to achieve the optimal distribution of element stiffness of the structural system satisfying the wind-induced drift and acceleration design constraints. The effectiveness and practicality of the optimal design technique are illustrated by a full-scale 60-story building with complex 3D mode shapes. Both peak resultant acceleration criteria and frequency dependent modal acceleration criteria are considered and their influences on the optimization results are highlighted. Results have shown that the use of various acceleration criteria has different implications in the habitability evaluations and subsequently different optimal design solutions. The computer based optimization technique provides a powerful tool for the lateral drift and occupant comfort design of tall building structures.

In this paper, a global acoustic design sensitivity analysis (DSA) of field point pressure with respect to structural sizing design variables is developed. Firstly acoustic sensitivity is formulated and implemented numerically. And it is combined with continuum structural sensitivity to obtain the global acoustic, design sensitivity. For this procedure, GASA (global acoustic design sensitivity analyzer) has been developed. A half scale of automobile cavity model is considered in this paper. In order to confirm accuracy of the results of global acoustic DSA obtained by GASA, it is compared with the result of central finite difference method. In order to reduce computation time, Rayleigh approximated solution is evaluated and compared with the solution which used every nodal velocities. Also the acoustic optimization procedure is performed using design sensitivities. From these numerical studies, it can be shown that global acoustic DSA is a useful tool to improve acoustic problems.
The paper describes the study of concurrent subspace optimization(CSSO) for coupled multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) techniques in mechanical systems. This method is a solution to large scale coupled multidisciplinary system, wherein the original problem is decomposed into a set of smaller, more tractable subproblems. Key elements in CSSO are consisted of global sensitivity equation(GSE), subspace optimization (SSO), optimum sensitivity analysis(OSA), and coordination optimization problem(COP) so as to inquiry valanced design solutions finally, Automatic differentiation has an ability to provide a robust sensitivity solution, and have shown the numerical numerical effectiveness over finite difference schemes wherein the perturbed step size in design variable is required. The present paper will develop the automatic differentiation based concurrent subspace optimization(AD-CSSO) in MDO. An automatic differentiation tool in FORTRAN(ADIFOR) will be employed to evaluate sensitivities. The use of exact function derivatives in GSE, OSA and COP makes Possible to enhance the numerical accuracy during the iterative design process. The paper discusses how much influence on final optimal design compared with traditional all-in-one approach, finite difference based CSSO and AD-CSSO applying coupled design variables.
This paper has studied thermal characteristics of machine tool to develope high speed spindle and optimum design condidering the thermal deformation. Comparing the test data of temperature measurement and structural analysis data using FEM, we verified the test validity and predicted thermal deformation, influence of spindle generation of heat, and established cooling system to prevent the thermal deformation. 1) The temperature rise of spindle system depends on increasing number of rotation and shows sudden doubling increment of number of rotation over 7,000rpm. 2) Oil jacket cooling can be effective cooling method below 8,000rpm but, over 8,000rpm, it shows the decrement of cooling effect. 3) Comparing FEM analysis results and revolution test results, we can confirm approximate temperature change consequently, it is possible to simulate temperature rise and thermal distribution on the inside of spindle system. 4) We can confirm that simulated approach by FEM analysis can be effective method in thermal-appropriate design.
