This study mainly aims to assess the performance of soil-structure systems designed by direct displacement-based method coupled with strong column-weak beam design concept through various system identification techniques under strong ground motions. To this end, various system identification methods are employed to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of a structure (i.e., modal frequency, system damping, mode shapes, and plastic hinge formation pattern) under a strong seismic excitation considering soil-structure interaction for different site conditions as specified by ASCE 7-10. The scope of the study narrowed down to the code-complying low- to high-rise steel moment resisting frames with various heights (4, 8, 12, 16-story). The comparison of the result of soil-structure systems with fix-based support condition indicates that the modal frequencies of these systems are highly influenced by the structure heights, specifically for the softer soils. This trend is more significant for higher modes of the system which can considerably dominate the response of structures in which the higher modes have more contribution in dynamic response. Amongst all studied modes of the vibration, the damping ratio estimated for the first mode is relatively the closet to the initial assumed damping ratios. Moreover, it was found that fewer plastic hinges are developed in the structure of soil-structure systems with a softer soil which contradicts the general expectation of higher damageability of such structural systems.
In this paper, the power flow analysis(PFA) has been used to analyze the vibration of a plate covered with a damping sheet. Experiments have been performed to measure the loss factor and frequency response functions of the plate covered with the damping sheet. The data for the loss factor has been used as the input data to predict the vibration of the coupled plates with PFA. The comparison between the experimental results and the predicted PFA results for the frequency response functions has been performed. It showed that PFA can be effectively used to predict structural vibration of a plate covered with a damping sheet in medium-to-high frequency range.
Eigenvalues are taken as performance criteria for structural damping design using viscoelastic material. Given material properties, optimal distribution of damping material is sought based on eigenvalue sensitivity. For eigenanalysis of frequency dependent viscoelastic material treated structures, Golla-Mushes-McTavish (GHM) model is used and some dominant modes are chosen for consideration. To avoid the intensity of computation caused by increased problem size, an alternative approximate method is proposed which uses elastic modes and can be applied under small damping assumption. A cantilever beam treated with unconstrained viscoelastic layer is tested and optimal distribution of thickness of the layer is illustrated. Partial coverage configurations are compared with the one-sided full coverage case.
A simplified yet effective design procedure for viscous dampers was presented based on improved capacity spectrum method in the context of performance-based seismic design. The amount of added viscous damping required to meet a given performance objective was evaluated from the difference between the total demand for effective damping and inherent damping plus equivalent damping resulting from hysteretic deformation of system. Application of the method is illustrated by means of two examples, using Chinese design response spectrum and mean response spectrum. Nonlinear dynamic analysis results indicate that the maximum displacements of structures installed with supplemental dampers designed in accordance with the proposed method agree well with the given target displacements. The advantage of the presented procedure over the conventional iterative design method is also highlighted.
Mg alloy is the lightest material of structural materials and is noticed for lightweight automotive parts because of excellent castability, superior ductility and damping capacity than Al alloy. But Mg Alloy is poor corrosion resistance and high temperature creep properties. In this study, Mg Matrix Composites were fabricated by squeeze casting method to improve high temperature creep properties and damping capacity. Hybrid Mg composites reinforced with Alborex, graphite particle, and SiCp was improved creep properties and damping capacity compared with Mg alloy. Compared to the length ($9\mu\textrm{m}, 27\mu\textrm{m}, 45\mu\textrm{m} etc.$), Hybrid Mg composites reinforced with SiCp, one of the most superior of the length and Alborex were more superior than those reinforced with graphite particle and Alborex in mechanical properties, creep characteristics, and damping capacity, etc.
The flexural vibration of aluminum beams with active and passive constrained-layer damping has been investigated experimentally to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. Piezoelectric film is used as a sensor and piezoceramic as an actuator for the negative velocity feedback control. The experimental results are compared with those by the finite element analysis. This paper shows the effectiveness of active constrained-layer damping treatment through experiments, and we have carried out an experiment to study the effect of beam thickness.
This paper is concerned with the optimal seismic design of added viscous dampers in yielding plane frames. The total added damping is minimized for allowable values of local performance indices under the excitation of an ensemble of ground motions in both regular and irregular structures. The local performance indices are taken as the maximal inter-story drift of each story and/or the normalized hysteretic energy dissipated at each of the plastic hinges. Gradients of the constraints with respect to the design variables (damping coefficients) are derived, via optimal control theory, to enable an efficient first order optimization scheme to be used for the solution of the problem. An example of a ten story three bay frame is presented. This example reveals the following 'fully stressed characteristics' of the optimal solution: damping is assigned only to stories for which the local performance index has reached the allowable value. This may enable the application of efficient and practical analysis/redesign type methods for the optimal design of viscous dampers in yielding plane frames.
In the paper, a fractional derivative Kelvin-Voigt model describing the dynamic behavior of a special class of fluid viscous dampers, is presented. First of all, in order to verify their mechanical properties, two devices were tested the former behaving as a pure damper (PD device), whereas the latter as an elastic-damping device (ED device). For both, quasi-static and dynamic tests were carried out under imposed displacement control. Secondarily, in order to describe their cyclical behavior, a model composed by an elastic and a damping element connected in parallel was defined. The elastic force was assumed as a linear function of the displacement whereas the damping one was expressed by a fractional derivative of the displacement. By setting an appropriate numerical algorithm, the model parameters (fractional derivative order, damping coefficient and elastic stiffness) were identified by experimental results. The estimated values allowed to outline the main parameter properties on which depend both the elastic as well as the damping behavior of the considered devices.
This paper discusses the application of piezoelectric sensors used for evaluation of damping ratio of PVC plastics. The development of the mathematical formulation based on the Empirical Mode Decomposition for calculating the damping coefficient and natural frequency of the system is presented. A systematic experimental and analytical investigation was also carried out to demonstrate the integrity of several methods commonly used to evaluate the damping of materials based on a single degree freedom formulation. The influence of the sensors' location was also investigated. Besides the commonly used methods, a newly emerging time-frequency method, namely the Empirical Mode decomposition, is also employed. Mathematical formulations based on the Hilbert-Huang formulation, and a frequency spacing technique were also developed for establishing the natural frequency and damping ratio based on the output voltage of a single piezoelectric sensor. An experimental investigation was also conducted and the results were compared and verified with Finite Element Analysis (FEA), revealing good agreement.
This paper investigates the dynamic response of a functionally graded material (FGM) coated half-plane excited by distributed time harmonic loading. Three types of typical distributed surface loads, including uniform load, Hertz load, and square-root singular load, are considered. The mass density and elastic modulus of the FGM coating are supposed to be described by the exponential function. The material damping is modelled by a linearly hysteretic damping which is expressed by a complex modulus in the time harmonic motion. Using Fourier integral transform technique and numerical integral method, the effects of the excitation frequency, gradient index, damping, and load type on the dynamic stresses and displacements are discussed.
