A design method of a Multiple Tuned Mass Damper (MTMD) system is presented for wind induced vibration control of a cable-supported roof structure. Modal contribution analysis is carried out to determine the dominating modes of the structure for the MTMD design. Two MTMD systems are developed for two most dominating modes. Each MTMD system is composed of multiple TMDs with small masses spread at multiple locations with large responses in the corresponding mode. Frequencies of TMDs are distributed uniformly within a range around the dominating frequencies of the roof structure to enhance the robustness of the MTMD system against uncertainties of structural frequencies. Parameter optimizations are carried out by minimizing objective functions regarding the structural responses, TMD strokes, robustness and mass cost. Two optimization approaches are used: Single Objective Approach (SOA) using Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) with multi-start method and Multi-Objective Approach (MOA) using Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). The computation efficiency of the MOA is found to be superior to the SOA with consistent optimization results. A Pareto optimal front is obtained regarding the control performance and the total weight of the TMDs, from which several specific design options are proposed. The final design may be selected based on the Pareto optimal front and other engineering factors.
Given an object, its positioning in the space is a main concern in structural monitoring and a required feedback in structural health monitoring, structural control and robotics. In addition, to make the sensor unit wireless is a crucial issue for advanced applications. This paper deals with the exploitation of wireless transmission technology to long-term monitoring GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers - like the Leica GMX 902 and the Leica GRX 1200-pro. These GPS receivers consist of five parts: antenna, receiver, user client computer, interface and power supply. The antenna is mounted on the object to be monitored and is connected with the receiver by a coaxial-cable through which the radio frequency signals are transmitted. The receiver unit acquires, tracks and demodulates the satellite signals and provides, through an interface which in this paper is made wireless, the resulting GPS raw data to the user client computer for being further processed by a suitable positioning algorithm. The power supply reaches the computer by a wired link, while the other modules rely on batteries re-charged by power harvesting devices. Two wireless transmission systems, the 24XStream and the CC1110, are applied to replace the cable transmission between the receiver and the user client computer which up to now was the only market offer. To verify the performance and the reliability of this wireless transmission system, some experiments are conducted. The results show a successful cable replacement.
A linear motor damper based on the linear motor principle is developed to suppress structural vibration. This paper deals with the design, analysis, and manufacture of the linear motor damper. It is designed to be able to move the auxiliary mass of 1500kg, up to $\pm250mm$ stroke. The control algorithm was designed based on LQG control logic with acceleration feedback. Through performance tests, it was confirmed that the developed hybrid mass damper has reliable feasibility as a control device for structural control. In addition, the linear motor damper is more economical than both hydraulic and electric motor driving mass damper with respect to simple structure and low maintenance cost. A series of performance tests of the linear motor damper system were carried out on the full-scale steel frame structure in UNISON Corporation. Through the performance tests, it was confirmed that acceleration levels are reduced down 10dB for first mode of structure
MRE-1 dual thruster module(DTM) which will be installed to the present under development KOMPSAT(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite) can provide reliable and cost-effective means of propulsive control for attitude and maneuvering control system. Thruster heat shield, one of the main components of DTM, is designed to intercept the radiative heat exchange between thruster and satellite during firing. The inside diameter of the current configuration will be decreased a little compared with that of the previous one due to manufacturing method change. Therefore, the possibility of interference between thruster and heat shield due to configuration change is investigated through structural analysis and their results are described in this paper.
Design of gas concentration process using a fully thermally coupled distillation is conducted with the commercial design software HYSYS. Detailed procedure of the design is explained, and the performance of the process is compared with that of a conventional system A structural design is exercised for the design convenience. The design outcome indicates that the procedure is simple and efficient. The structural information yielded from equilibrium distillation gives an easy formulation of distillation system which is the initial input required from the setup of the distillation system The performance of the new process indicates that an energy saving of 17.6 % is obtained compared with the conventional process while total number of trays maintains at the same.
In this paper, a new type of passive energy dissipating system similar to added damping and stiffness (ADAS) and triangular added damping and stiffness (TADAS) is proposed and implemented in the analytical model of a building with hybrid structural system in the structure's base which we call it; Telescopic column. The behavior and performance of a high rise R.C. structure equipped with this system is investigated and compared with conventional base isolation systems such as rubber isolator bearings and friction pendulum bearings. For this purpose a series of ground acceleration records of the San Fernando, Long Beach and Imperial Valley earthquakes are used as the disturbing ground motions in a series of numerical simulations. The nonlinear numerical modeling which includes both material and geometric nonlinearities were carried out by using SAP2000 program. Results show suitable behavior of structures equipped with telescopic columns in controlling the upper stories drifts and accelerations.
Vibration of intake menifold is important as it could worsen the noise levels radiated from surface itself and support bracket, and it eventually leads to the failures of a Throttle Position Sensor and an Idle Air Control Valve. In this study, structural modification method is proposed to reduce structural vibration of an intake manifold system. At first, vibration problems are identified through tests on a running engine. Then modal data acquired by modal testing and finite element analysis are helpful to understand vibration mechanism of the system, and used as the design guide when structural modifications are attempted. After the system model is validated by comparison of the modal data obtained from analysis and experiment, iterative calculations are performed to find optimized structure of the system by finite element analysis. As a result, a newly designed plenum bracket is suggested in such a way that the intake manifold is stiffened, and that design of the support bracket is suggested in such a way that the intake manifold is stiffened, and that design of the support bracket is changed in terms of bolting position, thickness, shape, and minimum weight increase. Finally, it is shown that a new design achieves a significant reduction of vibration of an intake manifold system and it is confirmed by tests on a running engine.
Coupling adjacent building with supplemental damping devices is a developing method of reduced structural response due to wind and seismic excitations. The philosophy is to allow structures, vibrating at different frequencies, to exert control forces upon one another to reduce the overall responses of the system. This paper studies the effect of installing vibration control devices of two high rise building structures(49 stories and 42 stories) connected by sky-bridge. According to the analysis results the use of sky-bridge can be effective in increasing damping ratio of the system.
As a vital component of power grids, long-span transmission tower-line systems are vulnerable to wind load excitation due to their high flexibility and low structural damping. Therefore, it is essential to reduce wind-induced responses of tower-line coupling systems to ensure their safe and reliable operation. To this end, a shape memory alloy-bidirectional tuned mass damper (SMA-BTMD) is proposed in this study to reduce wind-induced vibrations of long-span transmission tower-line systems. A 1220 m Songhua River long-span transmission system is selected as the primary structure and modeled using ANSYS software. The vibration suppression performance of an optimized SMA-BTMD attached to the transmission tower is evaluated and compared with the effects of a conventional bidirectional tuned mass damper. Furthermore, the impacts of frequency ratios and SMA composition on the vibration reduction performance of the SMA-BTMD are evaluated. The results show that the SMA-BTMD provides superior vibration control of the long-span transmission tower-line system. In addition, changes in frequency ratios and SMA composition have a substantial impact on the vibration suppression effects of the SMA-BTMD. This research can provide a reference for the practical engineering application of the SMA-BTMD developed in this study.
