  • In order to determine optimal design length of adhesive joint of a composite pressure vessel with separated dome, stress analysis of joint part according to changes of adhesive length was done. Adhesive length has a range of 50mm to 300mm as design variables. The ratio of adhesive length with any stress gradient to initial non-stressed adhesive length was called "stress gradient length ratio" and selected as objective function. The stress gradient length ratio of joint part with adhesive length of more than 200mm was increased very slowly with increase of adhesive length. It means that adhesive length of about 200mm could be the optimal value to ensure the structural safety of joint part against internal pressure of 2,500 psi.

  • When an adhesive joint is exposed to high environmental temperature, the tensile load capability of the adhesive joint decreases because the elastic modulus and failure strength of structural adhesive decrease. The thermo-mechanical properties of structural adhesive can be improved by addition of fillers to the adhesive. In this paper, the elastic modulus and failure strength of adhesives as well as the tensile load capability of tubular single lap adhesive joints were experimentally and theoretically investigated with respect to the volume fraction of filler (alumina) and the environmental temperature. Also the tensile modulus of the fille containing epoxy adhesive was predicted using a new equation which considers filler shape, filler content and environmental temperature. The tensile load capability of the adhesive joint was predicted by using the effective strain obtained from the finite element analysis and a new failure model, from which the relation between the bonding length and the crack length was developed with respect to the volume fraction of filler.

  • In order to test the adhesive capacity of carbon fiber sheet, a static loading method for bending-behavior-type beam specimens, cut in half was developed and test was conducted with compressive strength of concrete set as the test parameter. The tests were performed to prescribe adhesive shear strength based upon the result of shear failure as well as verification of testing method. First of all, the test method proved to be reliable in determining the adhesive shear strength. The test result also exhibited two types of variations in adhesive shear strength. Among two types of variations, average and minimum values for adhesive shear strength, relatively stable results, 3.41MPa and 2.11MPa, respectively. Particularity in the adhesive shear strength with respect to compressive shear strength was not found.

  • In the present day, the needs of new steel for lightweight car-body have been increased in the automotive industry. however, the resistance spot welding is difficult to apply to the new steel because of the narrow weld current range and defects. As the solutions to these problems, adhesive bonding process is proposed. Adhesive bonding which reduce noise and vibration can be applied to joining the new steel. In this study, crash tests of b-pillar applied the resistance spot welding, structural adhesive bonding, the mixture of the structural adhesives and resistance spot welding were performed. And FEM crash model for b-pillar applied the structural adhesive bonding was developed. The results of experiment and analysis on b-pillar crash test were compared to verify the validity.

  • To evaluate the adhesive characteristics of mixed cross-laminated timber (CLT) using domestic softwoods structural lumber proposed by KS F 3020 and yellow poplar, penetration depth of adhesive and thickness of bonding line were analyzed based on the results of boiling water soaking delamination. 3 Types of adhesives and 2 types of major layer were divided into a 5 ply CLT using yellow popular as minor layer. The bonding performance of the mixed CLT as structural members was evaluated based on the KS F 2081. The thickness of bonding line between layers of the mixed CLT was measured with a scanning electron microscope, and the adhesive penetration depth in the layer members was measured with an optical microscope. As a result of boiling water soaking delamination test of mixed CLT, the CLT specimens using PRF and PUR adhesives met the requirements of KS F 2081. It was verified that the penetration path of the adhesive in the layes was mainly through the tracheid cell in the case of Japanese larch and Korean red pine layers, and through the vessel and radial tissue in yellow popular layers. The penetration depth of the adhesive was the highest for the PRF adhesive under the same pressing time conditions, and the thickness of the bonding line was in inverse proportion to the penetration depth in the case of the PUR adhesive.

  • Structural stability and shock absorption are important properties for corrugated board. In order to maintain structural stability, adhesive properties between top/bottom liners and corrugated medium are not only essential but also important for productivity and product quality. Borax has been an essential ingredient in corrugating adhesive solution. Borax increases viscosity, bonding between starchs and green adhesive bond. The objective of this research is to improving adhesive strength and viscosity stability by adding cross-linking agent instead of borax. Rheology and penetration of main starch gelatinization slurry were affected by borax addition level. Borax increased viscosity and decreased viscosity stability, while cross-linking additives increased viscosity stability and adhesive strength by anchoring effect.

  • Adhesive membranes in the oocvtes of four loach fishes of Korea were investigated by light and electron microscopes to clarify the structural characteristics among the species. In the vitellosenic stage the adhesive membranes of oocvtes could be classified into two forms as follows: 1) fence-shaped form of Nemacheilus yoni and 2) non-adhesive membranous form of Misgurnus anguillicoudotus, M. Mizolepis, and Lefuo costuto. The adhesive membranes of oocvtes in the loach fishes showed a species specificity with reference to their habitats and spawning properties.

The Al honeycomb sandwich structural type adopt for improvement of lightness and structural stability to major part structure of aircraft or spacecraft. Adhesion badness properties of adhesive and adhesion properties of fillet mainly studied about al honeycomb structure. But study for adhesive properties of sandwich construction with surface treatment of Aluminum alloy barely performed. In this study, adhesive film was used between Al and honeycomb core of honeycomb panel[1]. The study for adhesive properties of sandwich construction with surface treatment of AA 5052 skin was performed.

  • Pull-off test is generally used to evaluate bond strength of FRP composite with concrete at job site. However, some damages on FRP composites can not be avoided during pull-off test and moreover test range of pull-off strength is limited by maximum tensile strength of concrete. Accordingly, it is required to set-up a test method that can evaluate mechanical properties of structural adhesive indirectly prior to pull-off test. In this study, the standard test methods for structural adhesive which can simply evaluate mechanical performance of adhesive were suggested through comparative experiments from each different standard in various countries. Particularly, gluing thickness of adhesive in tensile lap-shear tests, the section dimension of compression and bending test specimens become unified, and standard test specimen size is achieved by test results.
