Using rice husks pulverized by rotating knife cutter, the raw rice husk powder was solution treated by nitric and hydrochloric acids in order to separate phytolith from organic constituents. Because of the strong resistance of organic components of rice husk to acids, the raw powder had to be boiled in concentrated acids up to 300 min. By boiling in nitric acid for 60~120 min, all organic components were resolved while amorphous silica Powder of about 20 nm in size and of higher than 99.8% in purity was left behind. Inferior to the nitric acid, hydrochloric acid was not able to resolve organic component completely leaving unresolved matter of about 40% by weight even after 300 min of boiling. From the acid treatments and impurity analyses, it is considered that most of metallic elements in rice husks are combined to organic components that are easily soluble to acids.
The anionic exchange resins with the Dowex-1 and Amberlite CG-400 form were transformed into resin of sulfate and acetate acid form, respectively. The uranyl complex ions with SO$_{4}$$^{2-}$ and CH$_{3}$COO$^{-}$ were adsorbed on the anion exchange resion mentioned above, and these complex ions were eluted as mixture eluents of 0.7M HNO$_{3}$ - 0.5M NH$_{4}$NO$_{3}$ by anion exchange chromatography. The optimum adsorption conditions of uranyl anion complex ions adsorbed on the upper of the resin colmun were 1.5-2.0 ml/min of flow rates at pH 2.0 and adsorptive power of uranyl complex ion of sulfuric acid type were nearly consistent with the Caussion normal distribution curve, whereas the elution state of UO$_{2}$(Ac)$_{2}$$^{4-}$ with acetic acid type was departed. The weighing form obtained from resin of sulfuric acid and aceric acid type was U$_{3}$O$_{8}$ whose recovery was 91.7%. The possibility of recovering uranium from the monazite sulfate solution using a strong base anion resin, Amberlite CG-400(sulfate form), was successfully recovered more than 90%.

A two parameter model of a single fictitious weak acid with unknown dissociation constant has been successfully applied to design a neutralization system for many multi-component acid streams. But there are some processes for which above two parameter model is not satisfactory due to poor approxmation of the nonlinearity of pH process. Here, for etter control of wide class of multi-component acid streams, a three parameter model of a strong acid and a weak acid with unknown dissociation constant is proposed. The model approximates effectively three types of largest gain variation nonlinearities. Based on this model a nonlinear pH control system is designed. Parameters can eeasily estimated since their combinations appear linearly in the model equations and nonlinear adaptive control system may also be constructed just as with the two parameter model.
o-Aminobenzene sulfone-N-ethylanilide, the diazo component of C.I. Acid Red 57, is currently being diazotised by the use of nitrosylsulphuric acid because of its high molecular weight and weak basicity. However, this method has many problems such as complicated manufacturing process and discharge of large volume of strong acidic effluent. In this study, the possibility of replacing nitrosylsulphuric acid method by direct method, which is simpler and produces less effluent, has been checked and the optimum process condition was studied. The effect of HCl concentration, the amount of sodium nitrite and particle size of diazo component on diazotisation yield was investigated. The optimum pH condition for coupling reaction was also evaluated.

In this study, the surface passivation process for InP-based quantum dots (QDs) is investigated. Surface coating is performed with poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) and thioglycolic acid. The quantum yield (QY) of a PMMA-coated sample slightly increases by approximately 1.3% relative to that of the as-synthesized InP/ZnS QDs. The QYs of the uncoated and PMMA-coated samples drastically decrease after 16 days because of the high defect state density of the InP-based QDs. PMMA does not have a significant effect on the defect passivation. Thioglycolic acid is investigated in this study for the effective surface passivation of InP-based QDs. Surface passivation with thioglycolic acid is more effective than that with the PMMA coating, and the QY increases from 1.7% to 11.3%. ZnS formed on the surface of the InP QDs and S in thioglycolic acid show strong bonding property. Additionally, the QY is further increased up to 21.0% by the photochemical reaction. Electron-hole pairs are formed by light irradiation and lead to strong bonding between the inorganic and thioglycolic acid sulfur. The surface of the InP core QDs, which does not emit light, is passivated by the irradiated light and emits green light after the photochemical reaction.
Metal-templated condensation of cyclohexanedione dioxime and phenylboronic acid in the presence of Fe(II) sulfate heptahydrate proceeds cleanly in methanol to furnish the Fe(II) clathrochelate. An organic/inorganic hybrid membranes composed of Fe(II) clathrochelate and polyethersulfone was prepared by using phase inversion method. For membrane preparation, the Fe(II) clathrochelate was highly soluble (3~5 g/L) in DMF, NMP, and DMAc, which meets the requirements for the solubility of metal complexes in polar aprotic solvent used in membrane preparation. It was stable even in the presence of strong acids, such as trifluorosactic acid (pKa = 0.3). It was characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, and their stability in solution phase studied in the presence of (i) strong acids or (ii) competing chelates. Organic/inorganic hybrid membranes were prepared with polyethersulfone, polyvinylpyrrolidone, p-toluenesulfonic acid, Fe(II) clathrochelate and DMF by using nonsolvent induced phase inversion method. The addition of Fe(II) clathrochelate leads increase of surface pore density, mean pore size and flux. We can obtain highly asymmetric membranes by addition of Fe(II) clathrochelate.
Rate constants for the hydrolysis of cinnamonitrile in the concentration range of 1 ∼ 5M of perchloric acid at 25$^{\circ}$C have been determined by UV spectrophotometry and from the Bunnett equations, hydration parameters (${\omega}$ = 9.8, ${\omega}^*$ = 0.42 & ${\phi}$=1.6) were obtained. CNDO/2 MO calculations were performed to determine relative stability, net charges, and overlap population of various conformational isomers. The results show that the (E)-planar is more stable than the (Z)-planar and protonation is favored on the nitrogen atom. On the basis of above findings, the acid hydrolysis is initiated by the protonation of the nitrogen atom of cinnamonitrile and then water molecule acting as nucleophile and as a proton transfer agent in the rate determining step. In the transition state of the acid hydrolysis, nucleophilic addition of water molecule occurs by sigma approach to the positively charged $C_7({\alpha}$) atom of the conjugate acid. As the results, we may conclude that the hydrolysis of cinnamonitrile in the strong acidic media proceeds through the A-2 type mechanism.
Hydrofluoric acid is a colorless gas or fuming liquid with a strong, irritating odor. Hydrofluoric acid burns are uncommon; however, if severe burn occur, they caused death from systemic effects, such as fatal cardiac arrthmia. We experienced two cases of hydrofluoric acid chemical burns on digits. These patients had typical clinical features of hydrofluoric acid chemical burns, such as pulsating pain at the burn site, as well as ischemic and necrotic skin changes. The hydrofluoric acid chemical burn was confirmed by a history of exposure. Subsequently, we made a calcium gluconate gel by mixing 20% calcium gluconate, an antagonist against hydrofluoric acid, with lubricant, and we injected 10% calcium gluconate subcutaneously when they complained of pain rated at higher than 5 on the pain scale. Simultaneously, we monitored the patients' electrocardiographs and checked their serum total calcium, ionized calcium, and magnesium levels serially. Clinical presentations and the emergency management of hydrofluoric acid chemical burns were reviewed along with the current literature. These patients were discharged without any significant complications.

Chromic acid is a strong metal acid and acute poisoning is very rare. However, chromic acid causes serious complications, such as skin injuries, as well as renal and hepatic failure. We report on a case of a 47-year-old male who accidentally had chromic acid spilled over his nose and face. For the first few days, he was treated with ascorbic acid and massive hydration. However, after three days, his condition began to worsen. He was treated with hemodialysis for anuria and acute renal failure, and antibiotics for pneumonia. On day 10 of hospitalization, he expired of multi-organ failure. We suggest firm control and close supervision of chromic acid in the work place, and, considering severe complications of chromic acid, we propose a nearly and aggressive treatment.
Acid-base disorder is a common problem in veterinary emergency and critical care. Traditional methods, as well as the Stewart method based on strong ion difference concepts and the Fencl-Stewart method, can be used to analyze the underlying causes. On the other hand, there are insufficient comparative study data on these methods in cats. From 2018 to 2020, 327 acid-base analysis data were collected from 69 sick and 18 healthy cats. The three most well-known methods (traditional method, Stewart method, and Fencl-Stewart method) were used to analyze the acid-base status. The frequency of acid-base imbalances and the degree of variation according to the disease were also evaluated. In the traditional acid-base analysis, 5/69 (7.2%) cats showed a normal acid-base status, and 23.2% and 40.6% of the simple and mixed disorders, respectively. The Fencl-Stewart method showed changes in both the acidotic and alkalotic processes in 64/69 (92.8%), whereas all cats showed an abnormal status in the Fencl-Stewart method (semiquantitative approach). The frequencies of the different acid-base imbalances were identified according to the analysis method. These findings can assist in analyzing the underlying causes of acid-base imbalance and developing the appropriate treatment.
