  • The matrix method, as an effective FEM formulation for the analysis of rigid-plastic deformation, was applied to the bore expanding of anisotropic sheet metal. The effect of planar anisotropy on sheet metal deformation was studied for bore expanding process under the uniform radial stretching condition, and the results were compared with isotropic and normal anisotropic solutions. Experiments were carried out using a flat punch for cold-rolled sheet metal. The experimental results were compared with computations from the matrix method with the boundary conditions corresponding to actual experiment. Both in theory and experiment, it is found that the maximum thinning which results in necking occurs in the direction of the minimum R-value. The results also suggest that the matrix method is efficient for analyzing planar anisotropic sheet metal. The comparison between theory and experiment suggests that Hill's theory of planar anisotropy is somewhat exaggerated. However, the theoretical predictions are in qualitative agreement with the experimental results.

  • In roll forming process, a sheet metal is continuously progressively formed into a product with required cross-section and longitudinal shape, such as a circular tube with required diameter, wall-thickness and straightness, by passing through a series of forming rolls in arranged in tandem. In recent years, that process is often applied to the bumper rail in the automotive industries. In this study, a optimal front side member manufacturing technology, model deign and proper roll-pass sequences can be suggested by forming number of roll-pass and bending angle. And also effects of the process parameters on the final shape formed by roll forming defects were evaluated.

  • Design sensitivity analysis scheme is proposed in an elasto -plastic finite element method with explicit time integration using a direct differentiation method. The direct differentiation is concerned with large deformation, the elasto-plastic constitutive relation, shell elements with reduced integration and the contact scheme. The design sensitivities with respect to the process parameter are calculated with the direct analytical differentiation of the governing equation. The sensitivity results obtained from the present theory are compared with that obtained by the finite difference method in a class of sheet metal forming problems such as hemi-spherical stretching and cylindrical cup deep-drawing. The result shows good agreement with the finite difference method and demonstrates that the preposed sensitivity calculation scheme is a pplicable in the complicated sheet metal forming analysis and design.

  • In the automotive industry, it is required to reduce weight of the car and improve fuel efficiency. Competitive pricing is also a very important issue. That's why application of welded steel tube is increasing in order to produce a vehicle with a competitive price. Also, hydroforming technology is asking more and more for thinner tubing to realize to a lighter vehicle design. Steel tube is produced through a multi-stage process called roll forming. In that case, bucking and work hardening should be considered key forming technology is to prevent buckling and minimize work hardening during steel tubing for hydroforming To prevent buckling, it is required to optimize forming process in order to minimize stretching in edge sections and hold tightly cross-section during welding. And to minimize work hardening, it is needed to know the proper process to avoid reforming.

  • Cervical vertebrae are a complex structure and an important part of human body connecting the head and the trunk. In this paper, we propose a method to extract sternocleidomastoid muscle from ultrasonography images of cervical vertabrae automatically. In our method, Region of Interests(ROI) is extracted first from an ultrasonography image after removing unnecessary auxiliary information such as metrics. Then we apply Ends-in search stretching algorithm in order to enhance the contrast of brightness. Average binarization is then applied to those pixels which its brightness is sufficiently large. The noise part is removed by image processing algorithms. After extracting fascia encloses sternocleidomastoid muscle, target muscle object is extracted using the location information of fascia according to the number of objects in the fascia. When only one object is to be extracted, we search downward first to extract the target muscle area and then search from right to left to extract the area and merge them. If there are two target objects, we extract first from the upper-bound of higher object to the lower-bound of lower object and then remove the fascia of the target object area. Smearing technique is used to restore possible loss of the fat area in the process. The thickness of sternocleidomastoid muscle is then calculated as the maximum thickness of those extracted objects. In this experiment with 30 real world ultrasonography images, the proposed method verified its efficacy and accuracy by health professionals.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the improvement of stretchability in Mozzarella cheese based on the influence of various factors such as starter type, fat content, salt content and stretching temperature. To do this study, stretchability, meltability, fat leakage and the change of soluble nitrogen compound were measured during storage of the Mozzarella cheese at 4$^{\circ}C$ for 10 weeks. When L bulgaricus starter was added, stretchability of the cheese was excellent and cheese manufactured with starter of L bulgaricus and L. bulgaricus : Str. thermophilus = 1:2 improved meltability because of high soluble nitrogen compound. When salt content of cheese was 0.5%, this resulted in extreme deterioration of quality in regard to stretchability, meltability and fat leakage at five weeks and when salt content of cheese was 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%, soluble nitrogen compound was 4.49, 4.45 and 2.61 % at one week and 19.71, 19.44% and 17.07% at eight weeks, respectively. Stretchability was good at high stretching temperature, and cheese with stretching at 60'C showed poor meltability at the first stage, but this cheese had good meltability in process of time because increase in soluble nitrogen compound was high at low stretching temperature.

  • This paper shows some achievements at bending of extruded aluminum profiles during the extrusion process. The conventional process for the production of bent profiles involves a successive extrusion, stretching, and bending of the profiles. Conventional bending methods can not meet demands far precision and cost-effective production in some cases, due to cross sectional deformation, irregular decrease of tube wall thickness and a complication of the process design. An estimation of spring-back required for precision of the bending radius can not always be achieved by the over bending of the profile. Since the profile is hot during the bending process, the spring-back phenomenon can be avoided. This means that an additional bending process is not necessary. Consequently, flexible bending can be achieved with cost reduction and quality improvement. Experimental tests were completed to study the relationship between curvature radius of profile and position of guide on the extrusion for vehicle bumper. A7108 is applied as a billet material in order to increase strength. The overall correlation between the experimental and numerical results is good. It is therefore concluded that the present method provides an efficient means for the constant curvature extrusion process.

  • PAN precursor fibers were produced via wet-spinning process, and effects of polymerization and spinning processes, especially the stretching process, were investigated on mechanical properties and micro-morphologies of precursor fibers. An increase in molecular weight, dope solid and densification and a decrease in surface defects were possible by controlling polymerization temperature, the number of heating rollers for densification and the jet stretch ratio, which improved the mechanical properties of precursor fibers. The curves for strength, modulus, tensile power and diameter as a function of stretch ratio can be divided into three stages: steady change area, little change area and sudden change area. With the increase of stretch ratio, the fiber diameter became smaller, the degree of crystallization increased and the structure of precursor fibers became compact and homogeneous, which resulted in the increase of strength, modulus and tensile power of precursor fibers. Empirical relationship between fiber strength and stretch ratio was studied by using the sub-cluster statistical theory. It was successfully predicted when the strengths were 0.8 GPa and 1.0 GPa under a certain technical condition, the corresponding stretch ratio of the fiber were 11.16 and 12.83 respectively.

  • Cross wedge rolling process is utilized to manufacture multi-stepped axis symmetrical parts. This process is generally performed under high temperature conditions in order to induce serious deformation. But cold cross wedge rolling process has been rarely studied due to the limits of deformation. Recently, the cold cross wedge rolling process has been utilized to enhance the material strength in specified parts of manufactured products. In this paper, experimental researches were carried out with various forming conditions of cold cross wedge rolling process in order to suggest the design guidance to make preform for cold cross wedge rolling. The tensile strength and the surface hardness of specified region were compared to that of initial material with the variation of the area reduction and the rotational speed of rolling die. With respect to the area reduction, the maximum tensile strength was linearly increased and the surface hardness was rapidly increased within lower percent of area reduction. The surface hardness was saturated over the rotational die speed of 0.8 RPM.
