This paper deals with the optimum design of thick-walled multi-layered composite tubes by minimizing the process-induced residual stresses under some constraints of structural stiffnesses. An analytic model based on quasi-static thermoelasticity is adopted for the calculation of the residual stresses in the multi-layered composite tubes. The numerical results of optimization show that, in the case of cross-ply CFRP tubes, the residual stresses can be reduced to a certain level by controlling ply thicknesses. However, the optimized tubes may be susceptible to cracking because the transverse residual stress is still large in a strength-based sense. To further suppress the residual stresses, the effects of stacking sequence, wall thickness and axial pretension on the optimum solutions are examined.

In this study, compared two distinct estimation methods (stress charts and regression equations) proposed by the Indian road congress design guideline (IRC:58-2015) to determine flexural stress in Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement (JPCP). The occurrence of critical flexural stresses in pavement slabs is due to the combined effects of wheel loads and temperature. These stresses depend on various factors such as material properties of concrete, soil-subgrade strength, loading, and geometric properties of the slab. In order to account for the practical variability of these factors, critical edge stresses are determined using both methods and compared considering tied concrete shoulder. IRC:58 (2015) suggests, the stresses calculated by both the procedures should provide the same results. However, when these stresses are compared for the same configurations and same loading conditions, large variations are observed. The effect of tied concrete shoulder on reduction in critical edge stress is observed. Based on the study, certain important conclusions and recommendations are presented.
Normally all manufacturing and fabrication processes introduce residual stresses in a component. These stresses exist even after all service or external loads have been removed. Residual stresses have been studied elaborately in the past and even in depth research have been done to determine their magnitude and distribution during different manufacturing processes. But very few works have dealt with the study of residual stresses formation during the casting process. Even though these stresses are less in magnitude, they still result in crack formation and subsequent failure in later phases of the component usage. In this work, the residual stresses developed in a shifter during casting process are first determined by finite element analysis using ANSYS(R) Mechanical APDL, Release 12.0 software. Initially the analysis was done on a simple block to determine the optimum element size and boundary conditions. With these values, the actual shifter component was analyzed. All these simulations are done in an uncoupled thermal and structural environment. The results showed the areas of maximum residual stress. This was followed by the geometrical optimization of the cast part for minimum residual stresses. The resulting shape gave lesser and more evenly distributed residual stresses. Crack compliance method was used to experimentally determine the residual stresses in the modified cast part. The results obtained from the measurements are verified by finite element analysis findings.
The magnetic domain-refining techniques such as ball scratching, laser irradiation and plasma have been developed to reduce the domain wall spacing and thus iron losses in Fe-3%Si grain-oriented silicon steels. In view point of magnetic properties, it was supposed that the locally residual stresses change the magnetoelastic energy of the material and thus the spacing between $180^{\circ}$ domain walls decreases in order to reduce the magnetostatic energy. The effect of laser irradiation on iron loss and magnetostriction reduction for Fe-3%Si grain-oriented steel were investigated. Since the local tensile stresses were induced at the surface of Fe-3%Si steel by the laser irradiation, the minimum iron loss caused by reducing eddy current loss was obtained in spiete of the decrease of permeability by hindering eddy current loss was obtained in spite of the decrease of permeability by hindering the domain wall movement around the induced stress field. Furthermore, the laser treated 3%Si steel has lower magnetostriction as compared to non laser-treated steel and is less sensitive to applying pre-stresses due to the volume reduction of $90^{\circ}$ domain in materials.

This paper deals with an evaluation of the residual stress due to shot peening induced in a car¬burized gear tooth and its application to the fatigue crack propagation problem. The residual stress is estimated based on the assumption that the main cause of residual stress is the volume difference between the case and core due to martensitic transformation in cooling, and the influ¬ence of both the reduction of retained austenite and the strain in the surface layer induced by shot peening are considered. The reliability of the method is examined by comparison with stresses measured by the X-ray diffraction method. The stresses intensity factors are computed by the influence function method and the reduction of the factor due to the residual stress is demonstrat¬ed and discussed based on the fracture mechanics.
A base isolation system is proposed for earthquake protection of structures. The system incorporates spherical supports for the base, a specially designed spring-cam system to keep the base rigidly supported under normal condition and to allow it to move for the duration of the earthquake under the constraint of a spring with optimized non-linear characteristics. A single-story model is constructed to investigate the feasibility of the concept. Numerical simulations of the system as well as experimental results show that 95% reduction of the transmitted force to the structure can be achieved. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this isolation mechanism, the maximum dynamic bending stress developed at predetermined critical points within the frame of the structure is measured. Significant reduction of the dynamic stresses is obtained.

Velocities and Reynolds stresses in 3-dimensional turbulent flow in rectangular ducts with a 180.deg. bend were measured by hot wire anemometer. Slant wire was rotated to 4 directions and I type wire was rotated to 2 directions and the voltage outputs of them were combined to obtain the mean velocities and Reynolds stresses. Flow characteristics in the 1.5:1 and 2:1 cross secioned 180.deg. bend were measured and the results were compared with the data from Moon for the square sectioned 180.deg. bend flow. Flows in rectangular sectioned 180.deg. bend show the reduction in secondary flow and therefore the reduction of double maximum in local mean velocities.
The purpose of this study was to investigate stresses in the various components of fixed partial dentures restoring the posterior teeth of the lower jaw, and to measure quantitatively the effects of certain modifications in structural design on the stresses in the restorations using two-dimensional photoelasticity. Two-dimensional photoelastic methods were used in this study. Several models of fixed partial dentures were constructed. Shoulder less margins and anatomic occlusal reduction were incorporated in Model 1. Rounded shoulders and flat occlusal reduction were incorporated in Model 2, while Model 3 was a cantilever fixed partial denture. Other similar fixed partial dentures were constructed with V and U notches deliverately included in the region of the fixed joints for comparative reasons. The birefringent materials used in this study were PSM-1 and PSM-5 in standard sheets. PSM-1 was used for constructing the substructure, and PSM-5 was used in making the components of the fixed partial dentures. The two materials were used in the construction of composite photoelastic models. Improved artificial stone was used to represent dental cement in luting the composite photoelastic models. Static loading procedures were used at preplanned sites to represent occlusal loads in the mouth. 35 mm color and B/W film were used to record isochromatics in accordance with photoelastic procedures. Data reduction was performed using the grid method, which helped in, the mathematical integration procedure (Shear difference method) to separate the principal stresses. The results were as follows. 1. Fixed partial dentures do not function in bending as a symmetrical beam. Alternate areas of tension and compression were demonstrated when multiple contact loading was used. 2. The weakest part in posterior fixed partial dentures is the fixed joint. 3. (1) Models I and modified Model I were loaded on the pontic using a 50 pound vertical static load. The shear stress near the posterior fixed joint in Model 1 (U notches) was+129.4 p.s.i., and at the same fixed joint in modified Model 1 (V notches) was+239.4 p.s.i. The concentration of stress in fixed joint was reduced by 50% when U notches replaced the V notches. (2) Modified Model 2 was loaded using a multiple contact loader at a total load of 125 pounds. The difference between the principal stresses (${\sigma}_1-{\sigma}_2$), shear stress, at the V notches was+600 p.s.i., and at the U notches was+3l7 p.s.i. The shear stress was reduced by 50% when U notches replaced the V notches. V-grooves at the fixed joints should be avoided, and should be replaced by regular shaped U-grooves. 4. Cantilever fixed partial dentures had much higher stresses at the fixed joint than fixed partial dentures that were attached at both ends.
Recently, the improvement of computer capacities and artificial intelligence ware caused to employ for prediction of residual stresses and strength evaluation. There are a lot of researches regarding the measurement and prediction of residual stresses for weldment using a neural network in the advanced countries, but in our country, a neural network as a technical part, has only been used on the possibilities of employment for welding area. Furthermore, the relationship between residual stress and process parameters using a neural network was wholly lacking. Therefore development of a new technical method for the optimized process parameters on the reduction of residual stress and applyment of real-time production line should be developed. The objectives of this paper is to measure the residual stress of butt welded specimen using strain gage sectioning method and to apply them to a neural network for prediction of residual stresses on a given process parameter. Also, the assessment of the developed system using a neural network was carried out
Recently, many strengthening methods are developed to repair damaged structures, when the original structure is under loading, which causes the difference of initial stresses between original member and bonded material. However, current design method or theory, which mostly depends on ultimately strength design, cannot account the difference of initial stresses between members, and it disregards the reduction of nominal strength. In this study, a new strengthening design theory and the amount of strengthening which can account the difference of initial stresses are developed, and applied to the case when a structure in service is repaired. The results show that the amount of strengthening material depends on the status of damages of structure, and the nominal strength is reduced depending on the degree of damages.
