A descriptive-explanatory design was employed in this study. The purpose of this study was identify the level of assertiveness and clinical stress and the relationships between assertiveness and clinical stress in nursing students. A convenient sample of 143 nursing students was used for the study. The results of this study are as follows : 1) The level of assertiveness of nursing students was 3.65 in domain of contents, 3.68 in domain of voice, and 4.13 in domain of body language. Thus the level of asertiveness of nursing students was higher in body language. 2) The level of clinical stress of nursing students was 3.73 in domain of clinical education and evaluation by professors, 3.59 in domain of nurses, 3.32 in domain of human relationships, and 3.30 in domain of environment. Thus the level of clinical stress of nursing students was higher in clinical education and evaluation by professors. 3) The assertiveness of nursing students was found significantly related to human relationships. 4) The clinical stress of nursing students was found significantly related to satisfaction of nursing, satisfaction of clinical practice and priority of candidate for nursing. 5) The assertiveness of nursing students was not found significantly related to clinical stress in nursing students.
The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of lifestyle, study stress and training stress on health status, and provide fundamental data for health management of university students majoring in physical education. In this study, 149 students participated and they were surveyed demographic characteristics, lifestyle, Maslach burnout inventory (student stress inventory), training stress inventory, and Mibyeong index. Height and weight were measured for calculating BMI. For statistical analysis, Student t-test, ANOVA test, chi-square test, correlation analysis, and multinominal logistic regression test has been used. There were differences between Mibyeong groups according to digestion status, smoking for female students and quality of sleeping for both male and female students. Study stress and training stress also affected to health status. Cynicism among study stress categories and all categories among training stress showed differences between sex. Correlation analysis and logistics regression analysis was used to estimate related factors of health status after adjusting for sex and age. Based on logistics regression analysis, quality of sleeping affected to Mibyeong 1 group and quality of sleeping, smoking and digestion status affected to Mibyeong 2 group. Among training stress category, dissatisfaction with game result and skills and lack of leisure time were affected to both Mibyeong 1 and 2 group. This study suggests that lifestyle, study stress and training stress might be significantly associated with university students majoring in physical education. Through managing those influence factors, health status of students could be improved.
Purpose : In order to respond to the needs of society, it is necessary for nursing students to develop into their professional roles and form a higher degree of positive nursing professionalism. This study investigated clinical practice stress, clinical practice satisfaction, academic major satisfaction, and self-esteem among nursing students, and identified factors influencing their nursing professionalism. Methods : The participants of this study were 200 nursing students who used the internet and e-mail, and who understood the purpose and methods of this study. Data were collected from June 21 to July 27, 2021. Data analysis, including the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression, was performed using SPSS version 26.0. Results : The mean score was 3.52±.47 for nursing professionalism, 2.99±.56 for clinical practice stress, 3.35±.44 for clinical practice satisfaction, 3.75±.55 for academic major satisfaction, and 3.49±.78 for self-esteem. There were no significant differences in nursing professionalism according to general characteristics. Nursing professionalism was positively correlated with clinical practice satisfaction (r=.36, p<.001), academic major satisfaction (r=.57, p<.001), and self-esteem (r=.41, p<.001), but negatively correlated with clinical practice stress (r=-.41, p<.001). Factors influencing nursing professionalism included academic major satisfaction (𝛽=.39, p<.001) and clinical practice stress (𝛽=-.16, p=.021). These variables explained 36 % of variance in nursing professionalism (F=29.43, p<.001). Conclusion : These findings indicate that academic major satisfaction and clinical practice stress could be considered in effective nursing educational interventions to improve nursing professionalism in nursing students. Therefore, multidimensional efforts are needed to establish educational programs for nursing students aiming to enhance their nursing professionalism. In addition, these findings will be helpful for establishing various emotional control programs for the management of clinical practice stress among nursing students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of relaxation on stress and blood pressure of the college students induced by a cognitive distress game. Methods: The subjects for this research were 18 individuals whose stress index scores were below 4.0 (Asan city). The 18 subjects were divided into two, 9 students were assigned to the experimental group and the other 9 students to the control group randomly. Survey was used to gather data to recognize general characteristics and the level of stress and blood pressure were measured before and after cognitive distress game and relaxation. The gathered data were analyzed with frequency, $X^2$-test, Wilcoxon signed ranks test and Mann Whitney U test using SPSS 14.0 program. Results: Both level of stress and blood pressure displayed a statistically significant difference pre and post cognitive distress game. Relaxation had a statistically significant effect on level of stress. Relaxation, however, did not have statistically significant effect on blood pressure. Conclusion: The above results suggest that while relaxation was effective in reducing level of stress for college students, and therefore recommendable as a means to deal with stress. However, to investigate the effects on physiological index such as blood pressure, further research is needed.
This study was performed to investigate the dietary behaviors, perceived stress, and health-related factors along with their correlations in University students. The number of subjects was 150(64 males and 86 females), and the results of the study were as follows: Stress was felt by over 80% of the male and female students. The male students were more stressed than the females for economic value, gender difference, professor and drinking-related stress factors, and there was a significant difference between the genders. The female students had more clinical symptoms from stress than the male students in terms of dizziness, indigestion and constipation(p<0.01, p<0.001). The amount of food intake under stress was significantly different by gender. The female students preferred sweet tasting items, whereas the male students preferred hot tasting item when under stress. Also the intake of candy and chocolate when under stress in the male and female students was $2.00{\pm}0.74$ and $2.41{\pm}0.75$, respectively. The female students consumed candy and chocolate more than the male(p<0.01). Furthermore, 62.5% of the male students and 30.2% of the female students exercised to get rid of stress: the use of ball games as exercise in male and female students was $1.59{\pm}0.83$, $1.01{\pm}0.11$, respectively. Many students drank alcohol and smoked while under stress. In particular, the male students smoked more than normal as compared to the females, and there was a significant gender difference(p<0.001). The clinical symptoms positively correlated with the life stress level were degree of nervousness, sweaty, achy neck and shoulders, sore back, dizziness, eye fatigue, headache and indigestion. The amount of food intake under stress was positively correlated to the clinical symptom of headache. These results indicate the effects of life stress on dietary behaviors, food choice, and health status. Stress not only changed dietary behaviors, but was also related to health status. Therefore, education with regard to nutrition is necessary if college students are to practice food eating habits to correctly manage life stresses.
Purpose: This study was designed to construct a structural model explaining depression in university students. Methods: Data were collected from 1,640 university students by questionnaire, and analyzed using AMOS 5.0 to test the hypothetical model. Results: Fitness statistics for the modified model were GFI=.93, AGFI=.89, NFI=.91, and RMSEA=.081. All the 12 paths in the modified model proved to be statistically significant. Depression of university students accounted for 52% of the covariance by the factors. The factor that had the most influence on depression was individual vulnerability, and followed by sequence order, stress, social support, coping, and self-efficacy. Depression was influenced directly by individual vulnerability, stress, social support, and coping, and indirectly by individual vulnerability, stress, social support, and self-efficacy. Conclusion: A screening and management system for the high risk group is needed to effectively prevent depression and reduce rate of depression in university students. Detailed support programs which specifically deal with prevailing stressors should be developed to effectively reduce the harmful effects of individual vulnerability and stress. It is anticipated that the model constructed in this study could be utilized as a reference in developing various strategies to prevent and intervene depression in university students.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the correlation between stress and adjustment to college life among nursing students. Methods: The sample consisted of 183 university students in C & S cities. Self-report questionnaires were used to measure the variables. In data analysis, SPSSWIN 23.0 program was utilized for descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and regression analysis. Results: The mean scores of stress and adjustment to college life were 2.55 and 3.24. Stress was significantly different according to grade (F=7.30, p<.001), economic state (F=14.39, p<.001), perceived health state (F=6.66, p<.001). In regression analysis, stress for college life, perceived health state, and college life satisfaction were significant predictors of adjustment to college life explaining 68%. Conclusion: This study suggests that perceived health state was a significant factor on adjustment to college life among nursing students. Therefore, the strategies of nursing intervention which improve perceived health state must be developed for college students.
The purpose of this study is to determine the stress and the dietary habits of elementary school children and assess the associations with mother's employment status. The subjects were 423 students of 5th and 6th grade students (210 boys and 213 girls) in Seoul and Gyeonggi-Do. Two hundred fifty-two mothers had some kinds of job and 171 mothers were housewives. The students had stress the most from their studies/schoolwork (M = 2.37), while the least from "teacher/school" (M=1.51). The average stress score of the subjects was 1.76. The average score of dietary habits was 3.43. More specifically, the statement "not skipping breakfast" had the highest score (M = 4.04) and the statement "not substituting cereals, breads or drink milk for any meal" had the lowest score. Students with employed mothers had higher stress level than students with unemployed mothers. Students with employed mothers who have blue color job showed the lower dietary habits score than those with employed mothers who had other types of job. Students of employed mothers who go to school at dawn showed the lowest dietary habits score. In both employed and unemployed mothers, the stress score of students negatively correlated with the score of dietary habits. It was important for the mother to be at home when the students go to school and return. Based on this study, mothers should be aware of the stress level of their children get depending on their employment status. They should also provide their children to have good dietary habits and nutritional education regularly.
Objectives: Stress during adolescence is related to undesirable nutritional intake and negatively affects the growth and development. This study was performed to investigate the relationship among life stress, dietary behaviors and the intake of high-fat containing snacks in male and female high school students in Gyeonggi-do area. Methods: The subjects were 700 high school students (350 males, 350 females) in Gyeonggi-do from July to September 2014 and the survey was performed by using questionnaire that included general characteristics, dietary behaviors, high-fat containing snacks intake, and daily life stress. Results: There was a gender difference in health-related life style and dietary behaviors, and the life stress was significantly higher in female students than in male students. For health-related life style, exercise frequency, hours of sleep and conversation time with parents had significantly negative correlations with life stress, while smoking and perceived stress had significantly positive correlations with life stress. For dietary behaviors, the frequency of eating-out had a significantly negative correlation with life stress, while the changes in amount of meal intake under stress had a significantly positive correlation with life stress. The fat intake of 'high-stress group' was significantly higher and high-fat containing snacks consumed by this group consisted of cookies, honey bread and fried foods. Conclusions: It is necessary to develop appropriate programs for the emotional stability and stress relief of adolescents that provide continuous nutrition education focused on proper snack intake, desirable dietary behaviors and nutritional aspects.
Objectives: This study was performed to examine dietary habits, life stress, and nutrition knowledge among high school students in Gyeonggi area. Methods: A total of 431 high school students (210 males, 221 females) in Gyeonggi area participated in this study from November to December of 2011. The study was a questionnaire-based survey that included dietary habits, dietary attitudes, life stress, and nutrition knowledge. Results: Body weight, height, and body mass index were all higher in male students than in female students (P < 0.001, respectively). For dietary habits, the average score (P < 0.01) and scores for considering combination of food groups (P < 0.05), eating green and orange vegetables (P < 0.05), eating meat, fish, eggs, or beans everyday (P < 0.05), drinking milk (P < 0.001), and eating seaweed (P < 0.01) were higher in male students than in female students. For dietary attitudes, the average score (P < 0.05) and scores for the five items were significantly different between male and female students. Male students showed a significantly lower nutrition knowledge score than female students (P < 0.05). Life stress score of students largely was attributable to academic factors, and female students showed higher stress score for academic, personal, and surrounding environmental (P < 0.05, respectively) factors than male students. Dietary habit score (P < 0.01) and nutrition knowledge score (P < 0.05) in female students as well as dietary attitude score (P < 0.05) in male students were negatively correlated with life stress score. Dietary habit scores in male and female students were positively correlated with dietary attitude score (P < 0.01, respectively). Need for nutrition education was significantly higher in female students than in male students (P < 0.05). Conclusions: This study provides basic information on dietary habits, dietary attitudes, life stress, and nutrition knowledge according to sex and suggests gender-specific practical nutrition education programs to address undesirable dietary habits and attitudes in students with higher stress levels.
