The purpose of this study was to contribute to family nursing for reducing stress and improving coping of the parents of mentally retarded children. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires during a period of 2 months between November 1994 and January 1995 in the Kyoung-in area. The subjects consist of 180 parents (90 mothers and 90 fathers) of mentally retarded children attending schools for the handicapped and 186 parents (93 mothers and 93 fathers) of normal children. The levels of general stress and of parental role stress were measured with the General stress scale and the Parental role stress scale, respectively, while the Coping scale was adopted to measure the level of coping. The data were analyzed by using Chi-square test. fisher's exact test, Repeated masured ANOVA, oneway ANOVA and Scheffe comparison test. The results were as follows ; 1. The level of general stress was significantly higher in the mothers and the fathers of the men-tally retarded than in the respective parents of the normal. Of the parents, the mothers experienced significantly greater level of general stress than the fathers did in both groups of the retarded and of the normal. 2. As for the parental role stress, the mothers and the fathers of the mentally retarded experienced significantly greater stress than respective parents of normal children did. In particular, the stress was significantly higher in the mothers than the fathers of these children in both groups. The difference in the levels of parental role stress experienced by mothers and by fathers was significantly bigger among those of the mentally retarded tnan among those of normal children. 3. No significant difference in the level of coping was observed between the mothers of both groups and the fathers of both groups. By contrast, the fathers revealed significantly greater scores in coping than the mothers in both groups. 4. General stress experienced by the fathers of the mentally retarded was different by health status, satisfaction with spouses, and the supports from their spouses. Health status, satisfaction with spouses, and monthly income Influenced parental role stress experienced by those fathers. Their level of coping was associated with their satis-faction with spouses and family life. 5. Of the mothers of the mentally retarded, the level of general stress was different by their health status, while parental role stress was related to the satisfaction with their spouses and the child's age. The level of coping among the mothers was different by the supports from their spouses. The above findings indicate that those parents of the mentally retarded did not take more coping strategies than those of the normal did, despite greater stress experienced among themselves. Hence, nursing intervention for managing stress should be given to those parents including fathers of mentally retarded children. Mothers of the mentally retarded, in particular, should receive high priority in planning nursing care, since they experience greater levels of both general stress and parental role stress than their spouses, which is most likey due to primary responsibility in child rearing given to them at home.
This study examined whether specific coping strategies for the university entrance examination stress are related to high school seniors' depression and whether these strategies moderate the relationship between additional life event stress and depression. A sample of 358 high school seniors reported their level of additional life event stress, coping strategies they were using to handle examination stress, and their levels of depression. Problem-focused coping strategies and affective-regulation coping strategies were found to be related to reduction in depression. And, coping with examination stress was found to be related to depression independent of the level of additional life event stress.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of maladaptive perfectionism and stress coping on chronic fatigue of adolescent athletes. In order to achieve these purposes, a questionnaire survey was conducted with 254 adolescent athletes. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. In the stress coping and chronic fatigue level by maladaptive perfectionism level, the higher the level of maladaptive perfectionism showed a high level of emotional mitigation coping, wishful thinking seeking and chronic fatigue. 2. The correlation between maladaptive perfectionism, stress coping and chronic fatigue showed a significant level between each sub-factor. 3. The influence that maladaptive perfectionism and stress coping have on chronic fatigue are "anxiety about a mistake", "a doubt about the performance", "emotional mitigation coping" and "wishful thinking seeking". This result suggest importance of dealing with maladaptive perfectionism and stress coping in reduce the chronic fatigue.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate job stress, coping type, and job satisfaction in firefighters. Methods: It was a descriptive study, and 114 subjects were recruited during July to August, 2014. The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA (Sheffe's test), and Pearson's correlation coefficient using SPSS/WIN 22.0. Results: The job stress level of subjects was 47.45, coping type was 2.38 and the level of subjects' job satisfaction was 2.97. The job satisfaction was very closely negatively correlated with the job stress (r=-.66, p<.001). Conclusion: These results may contribute to better understanding of stress degree, coping type, and job satisfaction in firefighters. Further follow-up study on firefighters is necessary to relieve their job stress and increase active coping type.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among attachment with parents, self-differentiation, and stress coping strategies. The participants of the present study were 142 male and 161 female college students in Jeolla-Do province. The data were collected by self-administered questionnaire method. The major results of this research were as follows. First, there was significant positive correlation between the level of attachment with parents and self-differentiation, indicating that the greater the level of attachment with parents, the higher the level of self-differentiation. Second, active coping was associated with higher levels of differentiation of self and passive coping were associated with lower levels of differentiation. Third, there was significant positive correlation between the level of attachment with parents and active coping, indicating that the greater the level of attachment with parents, students used more active coping than passive coping. Finally, multiple regression analysis were performed to attachment with parents and self-differentiation. It was found that attachment with parents was the most powerful predictor of active coping and self-differentiation was the most powerful predictor of passive coping.

Purpose: The present study was to identify the levels of stress and coping and their relationship in mothers of children with cancer. Methods: A total of 124 mothers were recruited from a university hospital from June 1, to August 31, 2004. Parental Stress Scale developed by Miles and Carter (1983), and the Coping Behavior Patterns developed by McCubbin (1979) were used. Data were analyzed using SAS PC+ 8.0 program. Results: The mean score for the stress level in the mothers of the children with cancer was 195.6 from the range of 0-250. The mean score for the level of coping stress by the mothers of children with cancer was 121.8 from the range of 0-165. The level of coping stress was particularly high when the relationship with their husband was good, and when they felt hope for the children's health status. Conclusions: The most stressful element to the mothers of the children with cancer was the 'treatment and the nursing process for the children.' The frequently used coping methods were 'communication with other parents in the same situation' and 'consultation with the expert.'

The study to identify the relationship among stress associated with clinical experience, coping strategies and self-esteem in nursing students and to provide basic information which is useful for nursing students' learning experience in clinical setting were surveyed using self-reported questionnaires. The findings were summarized : 1. Senior students showed a higher level of stress than junior students. A higher stress level was observed in the unsatisfied group, compared with the neutral group. By class and clinical schedule, students who followed the 3-week class and 3-week clinical schedule showed a higher level of stress than those who followed the 8-week class and 8-week clinical schedule. 2. Senior students had a higher mean coping strategy score than junior students. And the satisfied group showed higher self-esteem, compared with the neutral and unsatisfied group. 3. There was a positive correlation between stress associated with clinical learning experience and coping strategies. But a negative correlation was seen between stress and self-esteem in nursing students. 4. Nursing students used more coping mechanisms as their stress levels increased but showed low self-esteem. The results suggest the need for developing more effective teaching methods and strategies that could improve students' ability to solve problems and sustain their self-esteem even under a stressful circumstance.
The purpose of this study is to study how college students cope with their stress and how the level of their self-differentiation affects degrees of stress and stress-coping strategies. The questionnaires were handed to 497 college students at Y university in Gyeongbuk Province and the data were analyzed in terms of Cronbach's ${\alpha}$-coefficient, frequency and percentage, t-test, and regression analysis by using the SPSS statistical package. The results of this study were as follows: 1. For stress level, degree of self-differentiation and stress coping strategies of the college students, the average scores were 3.56, 2.53 and 3.49, respectively in 5-point Likert Scale, indicating that the students possess the above-average score for the degree of self-differentiation and stress-coping strategies and the below-average score for stress levels. 2. From examination of difference verification of stress levels based on the degree of self-differentiation and effect of degree of self-differentiation on stress levels, it was found that the higher is the degree of self-differentiation the lower is the stress level. 3. From examination of difference verification of stress-coping strategies according to the degree of self-differentiation and effect of degree of self-differentiation levels on stress coping strategies, we found that the students of higher degree of self-differentiation exercise the more active stress coping strategies. These results show that the degree of students' self-differentiation is a significant variable that influences their stress levels and stress control methods. It is thought that students' self-differentiation functions to minimize their stress and to actively cope with their stressful situation and that a high degree of self-differentiation is a significant mediator variable that is beneficial to students' mental health. It follows from the above observations that while college students in this study seem to possess good degrees of self-differentiation and stress coping capabilities and low stress levels they need to seek for the ways to improve their degree of self-differentiation by seeing into themselves and relationships with others around them. Parents, schools and consultation agencies are required to take an active hand to educate and encourage them to cope with their stress positively.
The purpose of this study was to identify correlation of stress, coping patterns and physical symptoms in cancer patient's caregiver. The stress was measured by VAS(Visual Analogue Scale). The coping methods were measured using the modified Ways of Coping Questionnaire by Yang (1998) and the actual physical symptoms were investigated. The phases of patient illness consisted of 1st (initial) stage, and 2nd (recurred) stage and 3rd (terminal) stage based on literature (Lewandowski & Jones, 1988). The data were collected by a survey conducted from March to July, 2000 and which included 196 cancer patients' caregivers from two hospitals in Seoul. The data were analyzed using paired t-test, unpaired t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and Pearson correlation coefficient. The results were as follows: 1. The average of caregivers' stress scores was 62.5. Problem-focused coping methods were significantly used more than emotion-focused coping methods by the cancer patients' caregiver. The mean number of caregivers' physical symptom was 1.03. 2. There were significantly high level of stress in women, those who were more than 60 years old, those who had a low education level, those who had no job, those who are patients' wives' and those who are terminal patients' caregiver. There were significantly low levels of coping in women, those who were more than 60 years old, those who had low education levels, those who had no job and those who are patients' wives. There were significantly higher number of physical symptoms in women, and those who have no job. 3. Caregivers' stress was significantly correlated to problem-focused coping methods (r=-.21, p=.006), and physical symptom (r=-.28, p=.0001). In conclusion, attempts to develop nursing interventions for cancer patients' caregiver in women, those who are more than 60 years old, with a low education level, have no job, and are cancer patients' wives could have an improvement on positive coping methods and provide relaxation from stress in the patients' experience.
