  • Reliability analysis of tripod support structure for offshore wind turbine was performed. Extreme distribution function of peak response due to wind and wave loads was estimated by applying peak over threshold(POT) method. Then, stress based limit state function was defined by using maximum stress of support structure which was obtained by multiplying beam stress and concentration factor. The reliability analysis result was compared when maximum stress was calculated from shell element. Reliability index was evaluated using first order reliability method(FORM).

  • Many dentists have been taken an interest in restoration of severly damaged teeth after endodontic treatment and it is a true that there are lots of studies about it. In these days, although we have used Para-Post, pins, threaded steel post, cast gold post and core, and so on, as a method of restoration frequently, it has been in controversy with the effects of them on the teeth and surrounding periodontal tissue. In this study, we assume that the crown of the upper 1st premolar was severly damaged, and after the root canal therapy, two most common types of restoration were carried out ; 1) coronal-radicular amalgam restoration, 2) after setting up the Para-Post, restore with amalgam core and gold crown. After restoration, in order to present the concentration of stress at internal portion of the tooth and the surrounding periodontal tissue, we doveloped a 2-dimensional finite element model of labiopalatal section, then loaded forces from 2 long perpendicular to the lingual incline of buccal ridge an the middle point, parallel to the long direction axis of tooth at the fossa-were applied. The analyzed results were as follows : 1. Stress of the normal first premolar was concentrated on the most weakest anatomical structure, that is, cervical area, and no stress on the bifurcated area of the canal. 2. Crown restoration after root canal therapy causes large stress concentration on the bifurcated area of the canal. This stress concentration has larger value in case of lateral movement of mandible, and there are decrease in the stress concentration compared with natural tooth. 3. Coronal-radicular amalgam restoration method transports more stress to the tooth structure than restoration using Para-Post. 4. There are more stress concentration around Para-Post in the case of lateral movement, and we have more favo rable result when restored with Para-Post. 5. Generally, stress in the lateral movement is larger than stress in the perpendicular load.

  • In this paper, effects of thermoelastic stress by using lock-in thermography was measured in the cantilever beam. In experiment, a circular holed plate was applied to analyze variation of transient stress under the condition of repeated cyclic loading. And the finite element modal analysis as computational work was performed. According to the surface temperature obtained from infrared thermography, the stress of the nearby hole was predicted based on thermoelastic equation. As results, each stress distributions between 2nd and 3rd vibration mode were qualitatively and quantitatively investigated, respectively. Also, dynamic stress concentration factors according to the change of vibration amplitude were estimated for the resonance frequency.

  • One major concern that has occupied the mind of the designers is a structural failure as result of stress concentration in the geometrical discontinuities. Understanding the effective parameters contribute to stress concentration and proper selection of these parameters enables the designer get to a reliable design. In the analysis of perforated isotropic and orthotropic plates, the effective parameters on stress distribution around holes include load angle, curvature radius of the corner of the hole, hole orientation and fiber angle for orthotropic materials. This present paper tries to examine the possible effects of these parameters on stress analysis of infinite perforated plates with central quasi-square hole applying grey wolf optimizer (GWO) inspired by the particular leadership hierarchy and hunting behavior of grey wolves in nature, and also the present study tries to introduce general optimum parameters in order to achieve the minimum amount of stress concentration around this type of hole on isotropic and orthotropic plates. The advantages of grey wolf optimizer are stout, flexible, simple, and easy to be enforced. The used analytical solution is the expansion of Lekhnitskii's solution method. Lekhnitskii applied this method for the stress analysis of anisotropic plates containing circular and elliptical holes. Finite element numerical solution is employed to examine the results of present analytical solution. Results represent that by selecting the aforementioned parameters properly, fewer amounts of stress could be achieved around the hole leading to an increase in load-bearing capacity of the structure.

  • In this study, Finite Element Analysis have been adopted to analyze reducing stress effect and used to induce the sensitivity of design parameter on various techniques which was used for reducing stress. And so it can be utilized as a data to design on similar model. The effect of reducing stress with respect to change of relief groove radius can be increased by 27.3~18.2 % more than radius of fillet. And if a shoulder fillet radius is larger, additional reducing stress by relief groove radius is not obtained. And there was only little effect on reducing stress by changing the center point of groove radius along horizontal direction. In the case that undercut radius is 1.5mm, Max. Equivalent stress is reduced by 5.71% under bending force and 11.11% under torsion. The best effect of reducing stress at undercut model was yielded when the undercut radius is a forth of difference of stepped shaft radius.

  • Stress concentrations around discontinuities, such as a hole or a sudden change in cross section of a structural member, have great important cause in the most materials failure because the stress near the points of application of concentrated loads can reach values much larger than the average value of the stress in the member. This paper presents the stress concentrations between fillet and hole at different locations in a stepped plate under tensile loading. The analysis for interaction effect of stress concentration was performed by photoelasticity and ANSYS which is a commercial finite element software. From the analysis results, the circular hole located at the different position from the fillet radius can cause different values of stress concentration factor within interacting region.

  • In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement, to reduce settlement, and to increase bearing capacity for soft ground under quay, sand compaction pile method (SCP) has usually been applied. SCP-reinforced ground is composite soil which consists of the sand pile and the surrounding soft soil. One of main important considerations in design and analysis for SCP-reinforced soils is stress concentration ratio according to area replacement ratio. In this paper, the numerical analysis was conducted to investigate characteristics of stress concentration ratio in composite ground. It was found that stress concentration ratio of composite ground is not constant as well as depends on several factors such as area replacement ratio, depth of soft soil, and consolidation process. The values of stress concentration ratio increase during loading stage due to stress transfer of composite soil, and reach up to 2.5∼12 according to area replacement ratio at the end of construction. After the end of consolidation, however, these values are converged to 2.5 to 6.0 irrespective of area replacement ratio due to increase in effective stress of soft soil during consolidation process.

  • Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composites have drawn increasing attentions worldwide for decades due to its outstanding properties. Stress concentration factor (SCF) as an essential parameter in materials science are critically considered in structure design and application, strength assessment and failure prediction. However, investigation of stress concentration in FRP composites has been rarely reported so far. In this study, three resource-conserving analyses (Isotropic analysis, Orthotropic analysis and Finite element analysis) were introduced to plot the $K_T^A-d/W$ curve for E-glass/epoxy composite plate with the geometrical defect of circular hole placed centrally. The plates were loaded to uniaxial direction for simplification. Finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out via ACP (ANSYS composite prepost module). Based on the least squares method, a simple expression of fitting equation could be given based on the simulated results of a set of discrete points. Finally, all three achievable solutions were presented graphically for explicit comparison. In addition, the investigation into customized efficient SCFs has also been carried out for further reference.

  • The damping hinge of a built-in refrigerator was examined in terms of its stress and fatigue life. Analysis of the initial design showed that stress concentration occurred at the concave surface of the hinge lever, which was broken during the door opening-and-closing endurance test of the prototype. The maximum von Mises stress at this location exceeded the yield strength. In addition, Goodman fatigue analysis of the initial design showed that the fatigue life at this location was consistent with the failure observed during the endurance test. Based on these results, an improved design for the damping hinge was derived. Analysis of this improved design showed that the stress concentration in the hinge lever of the initial design was eliminated. In this case, the maximum stress occurred at the position where the hinge lever was in contact with the door stopping pin, and the maximum von Mises stress was smaller than the yield strength. Goodman fatigue analysis of the improved design indicated that the fatigue life of the entire damping hinge was infinite. It was therefore concluded that the improved design does not suffer from fatigue damage during the endurance test.
