  • In this study, the stress concentration ratio for the improved material of the low slump mortar grouting was evaluated through the composite ground method, the ground arching theory, the plastic angle method, the 2D and 3D numerical analysis and the 3D model experiment. The stress concentration ratio calculated by the composite ground method was 89.3, 3.75~59.0 when the three-dimensional ground arching theory was applied, and 82.8 for the three-dimensional plastic angle method. As a result of the 2D numerical analysis, the stress concentration ratio was 63.0~77.0, which was found to increase as the improvement ratio increased. The results of 3D numerical analysis were predicted to be 50.0~56.0 smaller than the results of 2D analysis. In the case of a special model experiment using a large triaxial compression cell, the stress concentration ratio for each load step was 53.0~60.0, and the stress concentration ratio evaluated by the experiment was measured within 2D and 3D numerical analysis predictions. In this study, a predictive equation for the stress concentration ratio according to the improvement ratio is proposed based on the analysis and experimental values for the improved ratio of the low slump mortar grouting.

  • Among soft ground treatment methods with granular soil used in domestic, the sand compaction pile method has been utilized greatly, but, as a result of exhaustion of sand and increase of unit cost, a necessity of an alternative method is suggested. In this study, the static load tests for crushed-stone compaction piles which were constructed on test field were performed. Based on test results, stress concentration ratios between the crushed-stone compaction pile and the soft ground were investigated and estimated. The stress concentration ratio was the range of 1.7 to 3.0 and the higher it was the more replacement rate was increased.

  • Gravel compaction pile (GCP) is widely used as it increases the bearing capacity of soft ground and reduces the consolidation settlement. Stress concentration ratio for design is dependent on the area replacement, surcharge pressure, depth and penetration rate. However, a range of stress concentration ratio obtained through field, laboratory experiments and numerical analysis is large. But since the main objective of the study is to evaluate the stress concentration ratio and settlement for both area replacement ratio and penetration rate through numerical analysis. Numerical analysis using the finite element program ABAQUS 6.12-4 has been performed for the composite ground with GCP. As a result, the stress concentration ratio at the points except for the point of top is in the range of 1.21-5.36, 1.19-5.45, 2.16-5.60 for 60%, 80% and 100% penetration, respectively. In general, as the penetration rate and area replacement ratio increases, the stress concentration ratio tends to increase.

  • Centrifuge model experiments were performed to investigate the confining effects of the sheet piles, installed to the sides of soft clay ground treated with sand compaction piles, on the bearing capacity and concentration ratio of composite ground. For the given g-level in the centrifuge model tests, replacement ratio of SCP and the width of surcharge loads on the surface of ground with SCP, the confining effects of installing the sheet piles on the edges of SCP ground on the bearing capacity, change of stress concentration ratio and failure mechanism were investigated. Kaolin, one of typical clay mineral, and Jumunjin standard sand were used as a soft clay ground and sand compaction pile irrespectively. As results of experiments, lateral confining effect by inserting the model sheet piles fixed to the loading plate was observed. For the strip surcharge loading condition, the yielding stress intensity in the form of the strip surcharge loads tends to increase with increasing the embedded depth of sheet piles. The stress concentration ratio was found not to be influenced consistently with the embedded depth of sheet piles whereas the effect of stress intensity on stress concentration ratio shows the general trend that values of stress concentration ratio are relatively high at the initial stage of loading and tend to decrease and converge to the certain values. For the failure mechanism in the case of reinforced with sheet piles, displacement behavior related to the punching failure, settlement right beneath the loading plate occurred since the soil was confined with sheet piles, was observed.

  • This paper is focused on stiffness ratio effect and a new method to specify the best pattern of piezoelectric patches placement around a hole in a plate under tension to reduce the stress concentration factor. To investigate the stiffness ratio effect, some different values greater and less than unity are considered. Then a python code is developed by using particle swarm optimization algorithm to specify the best locations of piezoelectric actuators around the hole for each stiffness ratio. The results show that, there is a line called "reference line" for each plate with a hole under tension, which can guide the location of actuator patches in plate to have the maximum stress concentration reduction. The reference line also specifies that actuators should be located horizontally or vertically. This reference line is located at an angle of about 65 degrees from the stress line in plate. Finally two experimental tests for two different locations of the patches with various voltages are carried out for validation of the results.

  • RAP(rammed aggregate pier) method which is intermediate foundation of deep and shallow foundation is used to improve the ground with high compaction energy. This method is widely spread around the world, but there are few examples and systemic researches for failure mechanism and bearing capacity of this method are not organized yet. In this paper, soil laboratory tests were carried out to evaluate the applicability of RAP method as the foundation of a structure. And the bearing capacity and the failure mechanism of RAP method were studied with respect to various relative densities(35%, 65%, 90%), diameters(45mm, 60mm) and lengths(20cm, 30cm, 40cm). As results, stress concentration ratio decreased as diameter of RAP was increasing or length of RAP was decreased or relative density was decreased. however these results were not always constant. because systematic interaction between relative density and diameter and length of RAP can affect stress concentration ratio, more studies on stress concentration ratio are needed throughout laboratory and field tests.

  • In this study, centrifugal model tests were performed to evaluate the stress sharing between SCP and surrounding clayey soil at composite ground improved by sand compaction pile with the low area replacement ratio. The SCPs were formed by the "frozen pile" method and pressure cells were installed on pile and surrounding clayey soil to observe stress sharing characteristics. As a result of centrifugal tests, it is shown that the value of stress concentration ratio is mainly affected by area replacement ratio, loading condition and elapsed time.

  • Presently, domestic SCP method with low replacement ratio is required as alternative in order to overcome the profitability of the sand resource because of the deficiency phenomenon of the sand resource by the actual condition design and construction is made by SCP method with low replacement ratio more than 70% for the port construction in the safe side. Sand compaction pile(SCP) method has been mainly used to improve the properties of soft clay or loose sandy ground. In design of SCP at soft clay ground, it is very important to determine the stress concentration ratio of composite ground relevant to the area replacement ratio. In this study, 2-dimensional FEM analyses were carried out to evaluate the stress concentration ratio of composite ground depending upon the area replacement ratio. When the interpretation result replacement ratio was 30%, the stress assigned rate showed and as the replacement ratio was high, the stress assigned rate according to the sinkage showed the low stress assigned rate.

  • This paper is results of extensive centrifuge model experiments about design factors influencing the bearing capacity and the settlement behaviors of SCP (Sand Compaction Pile). Centrifuge model tests were carried out changing design factors for SCP method such as replacement area ratio (as= 20, 40, 70%), Improvement ratio to footing width (W/B = 1, 2, 3), and amount of fines m sand pile (#200 = 5, 10, 15). Therefore, the effects of these design factors on the bearing capacity and the settlement behavior of SCP were investigated and changes of stress concentratio rato due to such an design factors were also investigated. Centrifuge model testing technique for preparing and installing centrifuge model of sand compaction pile, using freezing them, was also developed. As results of centrifuge model tests, more fines in sand compaction pile increases the bearing capacity of SCP. Optimum improvement ratio to footing width was found to be 2. Values of stress concentration ratio was in the ranges of 1.5 - 3.5. The depth of bulging in sand plies was found in the range of 2.0 - 2.5 times of pile diameter.
