Acoustic emission is n burst of microseismic waves generated by microscopic failure due to deformation in materials. The study on the detection of initiation and propagation of microcracks from acoustic emission measurement is very important for the evaluation of the stability of underground rock structures by the nondestructive letting method. In this study, acoustic emission was measured under uniaxial stiffness loading test used to obtain the complete stress-strain curves of marble and concrete used as reinforced materials of rock structures. The analysis of acoustic emission parameters and source location were performed to discuss the characteristics of the deformation and failure behavior of rock and concrete. And acoustic emission was measured under cyclic loading test to verify the Kaiser effect associated with the damage of materials, in situ stress of rock, and stress history of concrete structure.
The single carbon fiber tensile test was performed with electrical resistance measurement. Tensile property of single carbon fiber which accompanied by the relationship between the electric resistance and the strain was investigated. Since the collected data showed a linear relationship between them, the coefficient of fiber slip ratio (FSR) was obtained by computation. The fragmentation specimen (FS) was tested under tensile loading, and the single carbon fiber broke first due to the stress transferring form matrix to reinforcing fiber. The stress distribution of carbon fiber could be observed via the electrical resistance change. Slipping between carbon fiber and matrix was predicted based on the fragmentation test results, and the FSR was used to evaluate interfacial adhesion comparatively. The large FSR indicated poor interfacial bonding. Work of adhesion between carbon fiber and matrix was measured to verify the FSR method, and two results exhibited a consistent conclusion.
Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems have been recently embraced in long span cable-supported bridges, in which buffeting-induced stress monitoring is one of the tasks to ensure the safety of the bridge under strong winds. In line with this task, this paper presents a SHM-oriented finite element model (FEM) for the Tsing Ma suspension bridge in Hong Kong so that stresses/strains in important bridge components can be directly computed and compared with measured ones. A numerical procedure for buffeting induced stress analysis of the bridge based on the established FEM is then presented. Significant improvements of the present procedure are that the effects of the spatial distribution of both buffeting forces and self-excited forces on the bridge deck structure are taken into account and the local structural behaviour linked to strain/stress, which is prone to cause local damage, are estimated directly. The field measurement data including wind, acceleration and stress recorded by the wind and structural health monitoring system (WASHMS) installed on the bridge during Typhoon York are analyzed and compared with the numerical results. The results show that the proposed procedure has advantages over the typical equivalent beam finite element models.

The field measurements on the shotcrete lining are usually performed during the tunnel construction. However, the credibility of the measurements is not certain because of the non-stress related strains occurring in the shotcrete, the uncertainty of the deformation modulus of the shotcrete, and the intrinsic difficulties involved in the strain measurements in the shotcrete. The problem related to the field measurements on the shotcrete is investigated using the review of the previous studies and the field measurement performed for this study. A method for the correction of stress measurements at the shotcrete lining, considering the non-stress related strains, is suggested using the literature review and the actual measurements obtained from the non-stress shotcretes. The deformation modulus used for the calculation of the stress acting on the shotcrete is also suggested.
The development of filament stretching extensional rheometers over the past decade has enabled the systematic measurement of the transient extensional stress growth in dilute and semi-dilute polymer solutions. The strain-hardening in the extensional viscosity of dilute solutions overwhelms the perturbative effects of capillarity, inertia & gravity and the kinematics of the extensional deformation become increasingly homogeneous at large strains. This permits the development of a robust open-loop control algorithm for rapidly realizing a deformation with constant stretch history that is desired for extensional rheometry. For entangled fluids such as concentrated solutions and melts the situation is less well defined since the material functions are governed by the molecular weight between entanglements, and the fluids therefore show much less pronounced strain-hardening in transient elongation. We use experiments with semi-dilute/entangled and concentrated/entangled monodisperse polystyrene solutions coupled with time-dependent numerical computations using nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive equations such as the Giesekus model in order to show that an open-loop control strategy is still viable for such fluids. Multiple iterations using a successive substitution may be necessary, however, in order to obtain the true transient extensional viscosity material function. At large strains and high extension rates the extension of fluid filaments in both dilute and concentrated polymer solutions is limited by the onset of purely elastic instabilities which result in necking or peeling of the elongating column. The mode of instability is demonstrated to be a sensitive function of the magnitude of the strain-hardening in the fluid sample. In entangled solutions of linear polymers the observed transition from necking instability to peeling instability observed at high strain rates (of order of the reciprocal of the Rouse time for the fluid) is directly connected to the cross-over from a reptative mechanism of tube orientation to one of chain extension.

Prediction of soil behavior should be interpreted based on the level of axial strain in the actual ground. Recently numerical methods have been carried out focus on the state of soil failure. However considered the deformation of soil the prior to failure, mostly the small strain occurring in the elastic range is considered. As a result of calculating the deformation modulus to 50% of the maximum unconfined compression strength, Deformation modulus (E50) showed a tendency to increase according to the degree of compaction by region. The Poisson's ratio during loading-unloading was 0.63, which was higher than the literature value of 0.5. For the unconfined compression test under cyclic loading for the measurement of permanent strain, the maximum compression strength was divided into four step and the test was performed by load step. Changes in permanent strain and deformation modulus were checked by the loading-unloading test for each stage. At 90% compaction, the permanent deformation of the SM sample was 0.21 mm, 0.37 mm, 0.6 mm, and 1.35 mm. The SC samples were 0.1 mm, 0.17 mm, 0.42 mm, and 1.66 mm, and the ML samples were 0.48 mm, 0.95 mm, 1.30 mm, and 1.68 mm.
Mining, construction, and other special vehicles for heavy use are designed to work under high-performance and off-road working conditions. The driving and executive mechanisms of the support structures and superstructures of these vehicles frequently operate under high loads. Such high loads place the equipment under constant risk of an accident and can jeopardize the dynamic stability of the machinery. An experimental investigation was conducted on a refuse collection vehicle. The aim of this research was to determine the working conditions of a real vehicle: the kinematics of the waste container, that is, a hydraulic rotate drum for waste collection; the dynamics of the load manipulator (superstructure); the vibrations of the vehicle mass; and the strain (stress) of the elements responsible for the supporting structure. For an examination of the force (weight) on the rear axle of a heavy vehicle, caused by its own weight and additional load, a universal measurement system is proposed. As a result of this investigation, we propose an alternative system for continuous vehicle weighing during waste collection while in motion, that is, an on-board weighing system, and provide suggestions for measuring equipment designs.

A highly strained nanostructure comprising crystallographically aligned HgTe nanoinclusions and a surrounding PbTe matrix has been synthesized using a precipitation process of supersaturated HgTe-PbTe alloys. From the early precipitation stage, HgTe nanoinclusions take disk shape, which is transformed from initial HgTe nuclei, although there is no lattice constant difference of the two end components at standard state. As a primary reason for the morphological transformation of the initial spherical HgTe nuclei to HgTe nanodisks, the induced lattice mismatch is suggested. On the condition that the HgTe nanodisks maintain perfect coherent nature with PbTe matrix, the stress-free lattice constant of constrained HgTe nanodisks has been calculated based on the defined concept of the strain-induced tetragonality, the linear elasticity and the actual measurement in HRTEM images.

The crystal structure of nylon 56 fibers post extended by drawing process was investigated by synchrotron x-ray scattering measurement. In as-cast fiber, distinct (004) and (020) diffraction peaks were observed and they were related to initial metastable alignment of nylon molecules. With increase in the drawing ratio, (110) peak intensity was increased in vertical direction with decreasing (020) peak. At the same time, (004)' peak evolved position tilted to 29 degrees from the (004) peak. This evolution is directly related to stable crystalline phase of nylon 56 originated from additional formation of hydrogen bondings between N-H and C=O by post drawing process. We also compared density variation, stress-strain curves of the fiber as a function of drawing ratio and strain. The variations of density and tanacity also supported the increase of stable structure of nylon 56.

Microstructural changes may arise due to the particle vanishing, fluid diffusion, heating, etc. This study focuses on the changes in small-strain shear stiffness in k0 loading produced by local straining in particular system made of sand-salt mixtures. Local strains were induced by dissolution of salt particles. Experiments were carried out in a conventional oedometer cell equipped with bender elements. Axial displacement and shear wave signals are recorded at each loading stage and during saturation process. Experimental data showed that microstructural changes due to particle vanishing were clearly captured by using shear wave measurement. Saturation of sand-salt mixture at a larger axial stress did not always create a more condense soil at the end of loading stage. Sand-salt mixture is useful for laboratory test on controlled artificial specimen.
