  • Structural strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams is becoming essential to meet the up-gradation of existing structures due to the infrastructure development. Strengthening is also essential for damaged structural element due to the adverse environmental condition and other distressing factors. This article reviews the state of the field on repair, retrofitting and rehabilitation techniques for the strengthening of RC beams. Strengthening of RC beams using various promising techniques such as externally bonded steel plates, concrete jacketing, fibre reinforced laminates or sheets, external prestressing/external bar reinforcement technique and ultra-high performance concrete overlay have been extensively investigated for the past four decades. The primary objective of this article is to discuss investigations on various strengthening techniques over the years. Various parameters that have been discussed include the flexural capacity, shear strength, failure modes of various strengthening techniques and advances in techniques over the years. Firstly, background information on strengthening, including repair, retrofitting, and rehabilitation of RC beams is provided. Secondly, the existing strengthening techniques for reinforced concrete beams are discussed. Finally, the relative comparisons and limitations in the existing techniques are presented.

  • Steel-concrete composite beam with profiled steel sheet has gained its popularity in the last two decades. Due to the ageing of these structures, retrofitting in terms of flexural strength is necessary to ensure that the aged structures can carry the increased traffic load throughout their design life. The steel ribs, which presented in the profiled steel deck, limit the use of shear connectors. This leads to a poor degree of composite action between the concrete slab and steel beam compared to the solid slab situation. As a result, the shear connectors that connects the slab and beam will be subjected to higher shear stress which may also require strengthening to increase the load carrying capacity of an existing composite structure. While most of the available studies focus on the strengthening of longitudinal shear and flexural strength separately, the present work investigates the effect of both flexural and longitudinal shear strengthening of steel-concrete composite beam with composite slab in terms of failure modes, ultimate load carrying capacity, ductility, end-slip, strain profile and interface differential strain. The flexural strengthening was conducted using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) or steel plate on the soffit of the steel I-beam, while longitudinal shear capacity was enhanced using post-installed high strength bolts. Moreover, a combination of both the longitudinal shear and flexural strengthening techniques was also implemented (hybrid strengthening). It is concluded that hybrid strengthening improved the ultimate load carrying capacity and reduce slip and interface differential strain that lead to improved composite action. However, hybrid strengthening resulted in brittle failure mode that decreased ductility of the beam.

  • Currently, CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) plate bonding is used quite extensively as a strengthening method. In this technique, a composite CFRP plate or sheet of relatively small thickness is bonded with an adhesion material to steel or concrete structure in order to improve its structural behavior and strength. The sheets or plates do not require much space and give a composite action between the adherents. In this study, the rotation capacity of CFRP-strengthened cold-formed steel (CFS) beams has been evaluated through numerical investigation. Studies on different structural levels have been performed. At the beam level, C-section has been adopted with different values of profile thickness, web height, and flange width. At the connection level, a web bolted moment resistant type of connection using through plate has been adopted. In web-bolted connections without CFRP strengthening, premature web buckling results in early loss of strength. Hence, CFRP sheets and plates with different mechanical properties and geometric configurations have been examined to delay web and flange buckling and to produce relatively high moment strength and rotation capacity. The numerical results reveal that CFRP strengthening may increase strength, initial stiffness, and rotation capacity when compared with the case without strengthening.

  • This paper deals with the shear strengthening effect of RC beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets. Fifteen strengthened RC beams(including control beam) were experimentally evaluated to determine improvements in shear strength. The major parmeters of experiment variables are fiber sheet strengthening ratios and strengthening methods of fiber sheet(I-S, I-W, U-S, U-W type). Reinforced concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets were tested under the combined control of load. Considering strengthening ratios and strengthening methods of fiber sheet, shear capacity and failure mode of test specimens were evaluated. The results show that shear capacity of beams strengthened with fiber sheet is about $28.82\%$ in IS type, $20.49\%$ in IW type, $26.04\%$ in US type, $28.70\%$ in UW type higher than the strength of control beam.

  • In order to study the ductility and the lateral load carrying capacity of the masonry walls strengthened with CFRPs (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer sheets), three pieces of masonry walls subjected to cyclic loads with low frequency and vertical load of constant amplitude have been tested. Two different strengthening methods have been used. The strengthening efficiency is affected by the strengthening method. A simplified calculation approach has been introduced based on the experimental test results, and the theoretical results agree reasonably well with the experimental results. It is found that the critical loads, the critical displacements, the ultimate loads, the ultimate displacements and the ductile coefficients of the masonry walls strengthened with CFRPs improve remarkably (6%~57%). Therefore, the masonry structures strengthened with CFRPs are of better ductility and of better lateral load carrying capacity than the masonry structures without any strengthening measurements.

  • This study is numerical procedure of strengthening capacity in a field structure and compare analysis data with test data. Recently, many strengthening methods are developed and used to rehabilitate existing structure. However, both theoretical background and applying techniques are not established yet. One of the most popular method is plate bonding method using either steel plate or carbon plate. This theoretical background and applying techniques are very important and those applications are differed when applied in field strengthening cases. Also depending on the analysis out come, displacement increased based n the condition of members while reaching ultimate load or failure load.

  • It is demanded to obtain the design data for bond length of the strengthening carbon fiber sheets. An objectives of this study is to provide preliminary data of rational strengthening design method which is adequate to current domestic status. The present experimental study was performed to evaluate flexural strengthening effects of steel reinforced concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets. Following conclusions can be extracted. It is revealed that the maximum load carrying capacity is increased up to 9% when the reinforced concrete beams were strengthened with 1-ply of carbon fiber sheet which is half-width of beam. The performance of reinforced concrete sections were improved due to the strengthening carbon fiber sheets on the tensile side of beams. It is believed that the strengthening length of carbon fiber sheets must be provided as (0.5l+3d) to secure the ductile capacity of above three for the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams.

We analyzed and describe the total 19 studies involving national and international research. Results : The strengthening exercise was adapted to lower extremities and trunk muscle of participants and the isokinetic (concentric and eccentric) exercise was most of exercise type and then manual isometric exercise, functional activities, progressive task oriented resistance exercise, PNF pattern exercise was following. The studies reported that the strengthening program increased target muscle strength and improved balance capacity and walking function for the participants positively. Conclusion : Conclusionally the several strengthening program can be the intervention to increase the muscle strength without increasing spasticity for patients with stroke. We think that the strengthening of lower extremities an improve balance capacity and walking ability and it can use the intervention to change the quality of life in patients with stroke. More than 3weeks strength program might be effectiveness, in case of acute patients with stroke, the improving of muscle strength is available but need to study for improving balance and walking capacity more in the future.

  • Routinely, strength method for the determination of the nominal moment of reinforced concrete beam is assumed to also be suitable for strengthening beams with carbon fiber sheets since typically strengthening beams compromise 98% by volume of reinforced concrete. Flexural capacity of strengthening beam is absolutely dependent upon the type of reinforcement materials, amount of reinforcement, anchoring system, adhesion capacity between reinforcement material and concrete. Therefore, it might be incorrect to use strength method for analysis and design of strengthening beam without considering the differences in the load-deflection curves, mechanism of failure, state of stress distribution, failure strain of the reinforcement. An flexural analysis based on force equilibrium and strain comparability has been developed for strengthening beam. Systematic experimental investigations are compared with analytical results. Then, the adaptation of strength method for strengthening beam have also been discussed.

  • Eighteen (18) (120×300×2200 mm) beams were prepared and tested to evaluate the shear strength of Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) beams with no shear reinforcement, and evaluate the effectiveness of various innovative strengthening systems to increase the shear capacity of the GFRC beams. The test variables are the amount of discrete glass fiber (0.0, 0.6, and 1.2% by volume of concrete) and the type of longitudinal reinforcement bars (steel or GFRP), the strengthening systems (externally bonded (EB) sheet, side near-surface mounted (SNSM) bars, or the two together), strengthening material (GFRP or steel) links, different configurations of NSM GFRP bars (side bonded links, full wrapped stirrups, side C-shaped stirrups, and side bent bars), link spacing, link inclination angle, and the number of bent bars. The experimental results showed that adding the discrete glass fiber to the concrete by 0.6%, and 1.2% enhanced the shear strength by 18.5% and 28%, respectively in addition to enhancing the ductility. The results testified the efficiency of different strengthening systems, where it is enhanced the shear capacity by a ratio of 28.4% to 120%, and that is a significant improvement. Providing SNSM bent bars with strips as a new strengthening technique exhibited better shear performance in terms of crack propagation, and improved shear capacity and ductility compared to other strengthening techniques. Based on the experimental shear behavior, an analytical study, which allows the estimation of the shear capacity of the strengthened beams, was proposed, the results of the experimental and analytical study were comparable by a ratio of 0.91 to 1.15.
