  • An alternative type of building system with masonry units is extensively used nowadays to reduce the emission of CO2 and embodied energy. Long-term performance of such structures has become essential for sustaining the building technology. This study aims to assess the strength and durability properties of concrete prepared with unprocessed bagasse ash (BA) and silica fume (SF). A mix proportion of 1:3:3 was used to cast concrete cubes of size $100mm{\times}100mm{\times}100mm$ with various replacement levels of cement and tested. The cubes were cast with zero slump normally adopted in the manufacturing of hollow blocks. The cubes were exposed to acid attack, alkaline attack and sulphate attack to evaluate their durability. The mass loss and damages to concrete for all cases of exposures were determined at 30, 60, and 90 days, respectively. Then, the residual compressive strength for all cases was determined at the end of 90 days of durability test. The results showed that there was slight difference in mass loss before and after exposure to chemical attack in all the cases. Though the appearance was slightly different than the normal concrete the residual weight was not affected. The compressive strength of 10% bagasse ash (BA) as a replacement for cement, with 10% SF as admixture resulted in better strength than the normal concrete. Hence concrete with 10% replacement with BA along with 10% SF as admixture was considered to be durable. Besides solid concrete cubes, hollow blocks using the same concrete were casted and tested simultaneously to explore the possibility of production of masonry units.

  • In this study, field test was performed to investigate the strength-improvement effect of shotcrete mixed Micro-silica fume and shotcrete quality was estimated by EFNARC standard. Deterioration test combined the Freezing-thawing and Carbonation was also performed in order to investigate a long-term durability of high-strength shotcrete. As a result of test, the compressive strength of shotcrete using Micro-silica fume was 45.2~55.8MPa and flexible strength was 5.01~6.66MPa, so a promotion ratio of strength was 37~79%, 17~61% respectively. And the strength-improvement effect of strength by silica fume addition ratio of 7.5~10% for cement mass was more superior to the others. Due to relative dynamic modulus, mass decrease rate and carbonation progress of shotcrete mixed Micro-silica fume, it was especially realized that Micro-silica fume reduced deterioration caused by steel fiber and improved a long-term durability of shotcrete.

  • Currently, in the mix design of high strength concrete, cement content depend on the target slump which is fixed with tests. However this cause high content cement use because it is based on the mix design of normal strength concrete. Also, comparatively high content cement might decrease the durability of the concrete. Therefore, in this study, we investigated proper cement content satisfying durability, workability, compressive strength, and reviewed use of admixtures, proper sand-aggregate ratio to the cement content. The results indicate that cement content ranging $370{\sim}550kg/m^3$ did not affect the compressive strength. The field workers should consider durability, workability as well as compressive strength for determining the optimal cement content in the mix design of the high strength concrete.

  • Engineering properties of most polymers used in geosynthetics such as geogrid can be degraded by the chemical reaction (e.g., oxidization, ultraviolet rays, hydrolysis etc.), chemical and mechanical load, microorganism, and so on. In addition, polymer can be damaged by the compaction during construction, and the characteristic of tensile strength of polymer can be changed by the long-term creep effect. In this study, engineering properties of flexible geogrids which are manufactured by weaving/knitting the high-tenacity polymers such as polyester formed in a very open, grid-like configuration, coated with any one of a number of materials (e.g., PVC, latex, etc.), are investigated. Through the analysis of test results, the durability and the long-term design tensile strength of flexible geogrids are evaluated.

  • This study focused on the investigation of durability of latex modified concrete in the points of surface scaling resistance as cement types variated and latex content variated such as 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. An increasing the amount of latex produced concrete with increased flexural strength, but with slightly lower compressive strength. The increase in flexural strength might be attributed to the latex films between the hydrated cement and aggregates, and the decrease in compressive strength to the flexibility of the latex component named by Butadiene. The surface scaling resistance test was used to evaluate the durability of latex-modified concretes and rapid setting latex-modified concretes. The surface scaling resistance of LMC was quite good comparing to conventional concrete. Further, surface scaling resistance of RSLMC was improved with increasing the latex content.

  • The automotive front bumper guard is the most important part of the vehicle for protecting the life of driver when a traffic accident happens. In order to ensure safe driving, this part must possess sufficient strength and durability. This study was carried out with structural and fatigue analyses by designing front bumper guard models. After the lowest value for maximum total deformation and equivalent stress was found through structural analysis and the highest value for fatigue life was found for all three models, it was shown that the type C front bumper guard model was the most suitable for application to a real car. The strength property and durability of the optimum design were determined through this study's results.

  • This paper presents the experimental investigations on the compressive strength and permeation properties of geopolymer concrete prepared with low calcium fly ash as the primary binder activated with different percentage of Alccofine. The durability aspect was investigated by performing permeable voids and water absorption tests since permeability directly influences the durability properties. The test results show that Alccofine significantly improves the compressive strength and reduces the water permeability thus enhances the durability of geopolymer concrete at ambient curing regime which encourages the use of geopolymer concrete at ambient curing condition thus promising its use in general construction also.

  • A fuel tank of a vehicle is an important part due to its flammable contents ant its importance during crash conditions. Therefore, the fuel tank's design should be assessed for durability and robustness to ensure safety during the early development phase. Previously, evaluation for the durability was done by testing in physical driving conditions which could only be done after the completion of the vehicle. Computation simulation is a more effective method to evaluate the strength and durability of the fuel tank during the early stage. In this paper, two outstanding computational simulation methods are studied. One evaluates PV cycle fatigue due to build up pressure in the fuel tank and the other evaluates the PSD vibration fatigue from modal characteristics. The results show that computational methods agree with physical tests and are thus suitable to analyze the strength and durability of the fuel tank at early development phase.

  • In this study, the temperature, heat emission per unit time, and thermal stress or deformation of a radiator fan made of polyethylene or aluminum are analyzed for investigating its strength durability. Heat transfer in the case of the aluminum radiator fan is better than that in the case of the polyethylene radiator fan. Further, heat emission in the case of the aluminum fan is poorer than that in the case of the polyethylene fan. Moreover, because the thermal deformation of aluminum is much smaller than that of polyethylene, the thermal durability of the aluminum fan is better than that of the polyethylene fan. In an open space in front of the radiator and the closed space of the engine behind it, the thermal cooling effect of the polyethylene fan is better than that of the aluminum fan. Further, since polyethylene is lighter in weight than aluminum, polyethylene, as a nonmetallic plastic, is more suitable as a material of an automotive radiator. However, because of the higher strength durability of the aluminum fan, it is better than the polyethylene fan under high-temperature conditions or in the case of a complex pipe.

  • This paper reports an experimental investigation conducted to evaluate the durability performance of concrete mixtures prepared utilizing blends of Type I Portland cement (OPC) and natural pozzolans (NPs) obtained from three different sources in Saudi Arabia. The control concrete mixture containing OPC alone as the binder and three concrete mixtures incorporating NPs were prepared keeping water/binder ratio of 0.4 (by weight), binder content of $370kg/m^3$, and fine/total aggregate ratio of 0.38 (by weight) invariant. The compressive strength and durability properties that included depth of water penetration, depth of carbonation, chloride diffusion coefficient, and resistance to reinforcement corrosion and sulfate attack were determined. Results of this study indicate that at all ages, the compressive strength of NP-admixed concrete mixtures was slightly less than that of the concrete containing OPC alone. However, the concrete mixtures containing NP exhibited lower depth of water penetration and chloride diffusion coefficient and more resistance to reinforcement corrosion and sulfate attack as compared to OPC. NP-admixed concrete showed relatively more depth of carbonation than OPC when subjected to accelerated carbonation. The results of this investigation indicates the viability of utilizing of Saudi natural pozzolans for improving the durability characteristics of concrete subjected to chloride and sulfate exposures.
