  • In this study, various laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of the moisture conditions of Jeju basalt on the mechanical properties. Twenty specimens were produced respectively from basalts collected from Sangga-ri and Eoeum-ri in northwestern Jeju. The tests were performed under saturated and dry conditions, and the results of these tests were used to examine the relationship with the physical properties and the mechanical properties depending on the moisture conditions. As a result of analysis with the test results and references, it was found that the uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength and elastic modulus in the saturated condition decrease at a similar ratio as compared with the dry condition. Also, the Brazilian tensile strength and the uniaxial compressive strength were in a linear proportional relationship, and in the moisture conditions, this relationship was not significantly affected.

  • In this paper, permeable polymer concretes with unsaturated polyester or vinylester resin content from 5 to 8 weight %, resin-filler ratio of 1 : 1, sand content from 0 to 15 weight % and crushed stone of size 2.5∼10 mm were prepared, and tested for compressive strength, flexural strength and water permeability. The effects of the resin and sand contents on the properties of permeable polymer concrete were discussed. It is concluded from the test results that increase in the strength and decrease in the coefficient of permeability of the permeable polymer concrete arc clearly observed with increasing the resin and sand contents. The permeable polymer concrete showed compressive strength in the range of 170 to 350 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and flexural strength in the range of 40 to 90 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at coefficient of permeability from 0.1 to 1.0 cm/sec in this experiment.

  • Effect of polyol structure and NCO index on adhesion of PU adhesive at room ($25^{\circ}C$) and extremely low temperature ($-190^{\circ}C$) was investigated. At room temperature adhesive strength of PU adhesive tends to decrease as molecular weight of polyol increases, however, the strength at $-190^{\circ}C$ shows opposite tendency. Adhesive strength of the PU turned out to be directly proportional to the amount of MDI. PU containing aliphatic polyol was higher in shear strength at $-190^{\circ}C$ and the strength of PU with aromatic polyol was higher at room temperature.

  • In this study, we examined the physical properties of cement mortar by replacing a part of the amount of fine aggregate in moist mud flat. I analyzed the possibilities of using bricks. Flow measurement results show that the flow value increases as the mixing ratio of cement and fine aggregate increases and the flow value decreased as the replacement ratio of moist mud flats decreased. Chloride contents were also found to decrease with decreasing substitution rate of moist mud flats. As a result of the compressive strength measurement, the compressive strength increased in inverse proportion as the displacement ratio of moist mud flats decreased in most mixing ratio. As a result of tensile strength measurement, the tendency was similar to compressive strength and the intensity increased as the replacement ratio of moist mud flats decreased.

  • 128 freshly extracted human molars were used to study the interaction between dentinal smear layer removal with various agents, and the shear bond strength of a light cured glass ionomer cement to dentin. It was proposed that the removal of smear layers using acidic cleaners followed by incorporation of Fe mordant with dentin could enhanced the infiltration of monomer component in light curing glass ionomer cement and resulted in a high bond strength. For the first treatment process for removal of smear layers on the surfaces of dentin, 50 % citric acid, 10% maleic acid and 10 % phosphoric acid were used, and for the second treatment process, 15% ferric chloride, 6.8% ferric oxalate or 30% potassium oxalate were used. Distilled water was used as a control. After double sequential treatment on dentin, a light curing glass ionomer cement was bonded to dentin. After being immersed in water at 31'C for 24 hours, shear bond strengths were measured Instron testing machine(Model No.4202, USA). Surface changes were also observed using SEM (Hitachi, S-2300, Japan) after treatment process with each agents. The following conclusions were drawn : 1. Dentin surface cleaned with maleic acid and treated with ferric oxalate showed the highest bond strength with light curing glass ionomer cement. 2. Bond strengths of glass ionomer cement to dentin treated with maleic acid or citric acid were the highest, and that treated with phosphoric acid showed the lowest. 3. The effect of ferric oxalate on shear bond strength to dentin was always higher than that of ferric chloride. 4. The smear layers were clearly removed and the orifices of dentinal tubules were opened widely by the citric acid, maleic acid and phosphoric acid. 5. The orifices of dentinal tubules opened after using the first solution were closed with the treatment of ferric chloride. 6. The precipitate like crystals were formed on dentin surfaces and tubules, but a significant decrease in bond strength of glass ionomer cement to dentin surface treated with potassium oxalate.

  • Straight access cavity design allows the operator to locate all canals, helps in proper cleaning and shaping, ultimately facilitates the obturation of the canal system. However, change in the fracture strength according to the access cavity designs was not clearly demonstrated yet. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of different access cavity designs on the fracture strength in endodontically treated mandibular anterior teeth. Recently extracted mandibular anterior teeth that have no caries, cervical abrasion, and fracture were divided into three groups (Group 1 : conventional lingual access cavity, Group 2 : straight access cavity, Group 3 : extended straight access cavity) according to the cavity designs. After conventional endodontic treatment, cavities were filled with resin core material. Compressive loads parallel to the long axis of the teeth were applied at a crosshead speed of 2mm/min until the fracture occurred. The fracture strength analyzed with ANOV A and the Scheffe test at the 95% confidence level. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The mean fracture strength decrease in following sequence Group 1 (4558.90{\;}\pm{\;}77.40{\;}N$), Group 2 ($494.07{\;}\pm{\;}123.98{\;}N) and Group 3 ($267.33{\;}\pm{\;}27.02{\;}N). 2. There was significant difference between Group 3 and other groups (P = 0.00). Considering advantage of direct access to apical third and results of this study, straight access cavity is recommended for access cavity form of the mandibular anterior teeth.

  • The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effect of benzalkonium chloride on tensile bond strength of BPDM/HEMA dentin bonding. One hundred sixty dentin specimens from freshly extracted bovine mandibular incisors were used, and 0, 0.02, 0.1 or 0.5% benzalkonium chloride solution was applied to the dentin specimen with/after phosphoric acid. 32% phosphoric acid was used when the specimens were bonded with One-Step$^{TM}$, a BPDM/HEMA system and 10% was used when bonded with All-Bond$^{(R)}$ 2, a NTG-GMA/BPDM system. Aelitefil$^{TM}$ composite resin was bonded to the pretreated dentin specimen with the use of All-Bond$^{(R)}$ 2 or One-Step$^{TM}$ dentin bonding agent. After the bonded specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours, tensile bond strength was measured. The fractured dentin specimens were examined under the scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : Benzalkonium chloride application after acid-treatment resulted in decrease of dentin bond strength of One-Step$^{TM}$, a BPDM/HEMA system (p>0.05). Benzalkonium chloride application did not exert any influence on dentin bond strength of All-Bond$^{(R)}$ 2, a NTG-GMA/BPDM system (p>0.05). There was no relationship between the concentration or application method of benzalkonium chloride and the dentin bond strength of One-Step$^{TM}$ or All-Bon$^{(R)}$ 2 (p<0.05). On SEM examination of the fractured dentin-resin interface, while mixed failure was prominent in dentin bonding with One-Step$^{TM}$, adhesive and mixed failures were seen together in dentin bonding with All-Bond$^{(R)}$ 2 regardless of the concentration and application method of benzalkonium chloride.

  • The effects of alloying elements and the cooling condition on the microstructure, tensile properties, and Charpy impact properties of high-strength bainitic steel plates fabricated by a controlled rolling process were investigated in the present study. Eight kinds of steel plates were fabricated by varying C, Cr, and Nb additions under two different cooling rates, and their microstructures and tensile and Charpy impact properties were evaluated. The microstructures present in the steels increased in the order of granular bainite, acicular ferrite, bainitic ferrite, and martensite as the carbon equivalent or cooling rate increased, which resulted in a decrease in the ductility and Charpy absorbed energy. The steels containing a considerable amount of bainitic ferrite or martensite showed very high strengths, together with good ductility and Charpy absorbed energy. In order to achieve the best combination of strength, ductility, and Charpy absorbed energy, granular bainite and acicular ferrite were properly included in the high-strength bainitic steels by controlling the carbon equivalent and cooling rate, while about 50 vol.% of bainitic ferrite or martensite was maintained to maintain the high strength.

  • In this study, polybutadiene based di-functional urethane acrylate oligomer (PB-UAO) were synthesized from polybutadiene diol and isophorone diisocyanate. And then, pressure sensitive adhesive films were prepared by mixing with synthesized oligomer, tri-functional acrylate monomer (Tris(2-acryloyloxyethyl) isocyanurate (TAOEIC) or Trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) or Pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA)), mono-functional acrylate monomer (Stearyl acrylate) and UV initiators. Effects of types and contents of trifunctional acrylate monomers on peel strength, tensile strength, elongation, thermal stability and water absorption property were studied. As the contents of tri-functional acrylate monomer increased, and as the molecular weight of tri-functional acrylate monomer decreased, peel strength, elongation and water absorption showed a tendency to decrease whereas tensile strength and thermal stability showed a tendency to increase.

  • The tubes which are applied in jacket platforms as the supporting structure might be collided by supply vessels. Such kind of impact will lead to plastic deformation on tube members. As a result, the ultimate strength of tubes will decrease compared to that of intact ones. In order to make a decision on whether to repair or replace the members, it is crucial to know the residual strength of the tubes. After being damaged by lateral impact, the simply supported tubes will definitely loss a certain extent of load carrying capacity under uniform axial compression. Therefore, in this paper, the relationship between the residual ultimate strength of the damaged circular tube by collision and the energy dissipation due to lateral impact is investigated. The influences of several parameters, such as the length, diameter and thickness of the tube and the impact energy, on the reduction of ultimate strength are investigated. A series of numerical simulations are performed using nonlinear FEA software LS-DYNA. Based on simulation results, a non-dimensional parameter is introduced to represent the degree of damage of various size of tubes after collision impact. By applying this non-dimensional parameter, a simplified formula has been derived to describe the relationship between axial compressive residual ultimate and lateral impact energy and tube parameters. Finally, by comparing with the allowable compressive stress proposed in API rules (RP2A-WSD A P I, 2000), the critical damage of tube due to collision impact to be repaired is proposed.
