Experimental Study on Frost Resistance of High-Strength Concrete Using Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag (고로슬래그 미분말을 흔입한 고강도콘크리트의 내동해성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This study is to investigate for the frost resistance of high-strength concrete using finely ground granulated blast-furnace slag with experimental parameters, such as water/binder ratio, replacement proportion of granulated blast-furnace slag, air content and methods of curing. The high-strength concrete using granulated blast-furnace slag is effective to resist frost and decrease scaling. The more increasable replacement proportion of granulated blast-furnace slag is, the better the effect is. The high-strength concrete using granulated blast-furnace slag needs hydrating adequately to prevent deterioration by drying in the early curing period. The micro structure of high-strength concrete, increased to the pore number with diameter of 0.03~0.1mm, is changed by using granulated blast-furnace slag, but is presented differently according to water/binder ration and replacement proportion of granulated blast-furnace slag.

  • This paper is concerned with the surface roughness and the bending strength of ground workpiece in ZrO2 ceramic grinding. Surface roughness was measured with surface tracer and bending strength value was obtained by three-point bending test on machining center using tool dynamometer. Grinding experiments were carried out to examine the effects of grinding conditions including diamond mesh size, table speed, and depth of cut on ground surface roughness. The correlation between surface roughness and bending strength was also inspected. The experimental results indicate that the rougher surface was produced as the mesh size of diamond wheel is reduced and table speed is increased, but surface roughness is not affected by depth of cut. The values of bending strength decrease as the values of Ra, Rmax and Ku increase.

  • This study examines whether regular exercise moderates the relationship between hand grip strength and cognitive function in older adults. Older adults 65 and over from the third wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing Data were analyzed. A moderated multiple regression analysis was conducted to assess the moderating effects of regular exercise on the relationship between hand grip strength and cognitive function. According to the results, regular exercise moderated the effects of hand grip strength on cognitive function, suggesting that regular exercise should be promoted for older adults to reduce unfavorable effects of a decrease in hand grip strength on cognitive function.

  • To investigate the properties of high flowing and high strength concrete with crushed sand and fly ash for CFT structure, many batches were performed by a trial-error method. In the experiment W/B was set up three levels as 0.25, 0.30 and 0.35. Also the variables of the experiment were a substitution ratio of fly ash, a blend ratio of crushed sand and the ages of specimens(3, 7, 28 days). The results of this study are summarized as the follows; 1) The effect a substitution ratio of fly ash on the compressive strength was not consistent with age. For twenty-eight day compressive strength, the best result was come out when cement was substituted by 10% of fly ash. 2) The decrease of the water binder ratio, the increase of compressive strength and elastic modulus. Also the relationship is very similar to the case of a normal concrete

Shear Strength of Intermediate Soils with Different Types of Fines and Sands

  • In this paper, a series of monotonic undrained shear tests were carried out on four kinds of sand-fine mixtures with various fines content. Two kinds of sands (Silica sand V3, V6) and fines (Iwakuni natural clay, Tottori silt) were mixed together in various proportions, while paying attention to the void ratio expressed in terms of sand structure $(F_c{\leq}F_{cth})$. The undrained shear strength of mixtures below the threshold fines content was observed so that as the plastic fines content increases, maximum deviator stress ratio decrease for dense samples while an increase is noted for loose samples. For non-plastic fines, the increase in the amount of fines leads to an increase in density of the soil, which results in an increase in strength. Then, the monotonic shear strength of the mixtures was estimated using the concept of granular void ratio. It was found that the shear strength of mixtures is greatly dependent on the skeleton structure of sand particles.

Variation of Welded-Joint Tensile Strength of GMA Welded Accelerated-Cooled Steel (가속냉각강 GMAW 용접이음부의 강도 변화)

  • Variation of welded-joint hardness and tensile strength of a accelerated-cooled fine-grained ferritic-pearlitic steel with heat input was investigated. In a weld heat-affected zone, a softened zone was formed and it had lower hardness than that of a base metal. While the width of a softened zone increased continuously with an increase of heat input up to 100kJ/cm. the minimum hardness in a softned zone was almost constant after a continuos decrease up to 60KJ/cm. Because of a softened zone, the welded-joint was fractured in the HAZ and its maximum reduction of tensile strength was about 20%. Measured welded-joint tensile strength and calculated minimum tensile strength in a welded-joint was almost same, which means that the plastic restraint of a softened zone did not occur in this experiment. It is believed that as a softened zone width-to-specimen thickness ratio is as high as 2~6 in this experiment, the plastic restraint effect does not occur. Theoretical analysis shows that the plastic restraint effect occurs only when the ratio is below 0.5.

  • In this study, we evaluates the dependence of thickness and temperature in the breakdown strength of MDPE and effect of semiconductor. As the result, breakdown strength trend to decrease according to the increase of thickness and temperature but there is no dependence of temperature in the 70${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ MDPE film. We obtained the result that the breakdown strength was a little lower in the structure of Semil/MDPE than Semi/MDPE/Semi, but breakdown strength of MDPE was greater both of all. Therefore we are investigating the effect of semiconductor in the breakdown strength.

  • This study analyzes the change of the basic characteristics of pavement concrete according to the reinforcement of macro-fiber and the results of the study can be summarized as follows. In the case of the compressive strength of the concrete, the fiber reinforced pavement concrete shows a small decreasing level compared to the basic mixing of pavement concrete (hereafter referred as 'Plain') based on the aging of 28 days. In particular, the polypropylene fiber made in Korea represents a decrease in the strength about 12% compared with that of the Plain. In the case of the tensile strength, it shows certain improvements in the tensile performance compared with that of the Plain. In particular, in the case of the polyvinyl alcohol fiber that shows the largest improvement in tensile performance, it shows an increase in its strength about 21%. In the case of the bending strength, there are no improvements in its strength in the fiber reinforced concrete compared to that of the Plain.

Using generalized regression neural network (GRNN) for mechanical strength prediction of lightweight mortar

  • In this paper, the mechanical strength of different lightweight mortars made with 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95 and 100 percentage of scoria instead of sand and 0.55 water-cement ratio and 350 $kg/m^3$ cement content is investigated. The experimental result showed 7.9%, 16.7% and 49% decrease in compressive strength, tensile strength and mortar density, respectively, by using 100% scoria instead of sand in the mortar. The normalized compressive and tensile strength data are applied for artificial neural network (ANN) generation using generalized regression neural network (GRNN). Totally, 90 experimental data were selected randomly and applied to find the best network with minimum mean square error (MSE) and maximum correlation of determination. The created GRNN with 2 input layers, 2 output layers and a network spread of 0.1 had minimum MSE close to 0 and maximum correlation of determination close to 1.

  • The aim of this study was to estimate adverse effect on compression strength of corrugated fiberboard containers due to vibration during distribution process. Distribution environment such as road conditions and compression strength of corrugated fiberboard containers for selected agricultural products were studied. We found that increasing humidity does not effect significantly on natural frequencies of boxes, but results in accelerative effect to decrease compression strength of boxes. Box structures and product types also effect on loss of compression strength greatly.
