To construct pipe lines, culverts, or other utility lines, temporary slopes formed by excavating the compacted embankment are frequently met with in the field. Ignoring stability analyses for such slopes and applying inappropriate slope inclinations often result in safety problems. In this study, stability of such slopes were investigated considering the influence of anisotropic shear strength of the layered compacted ground. A series of stability analyses were conducted for slopes varying the slope angle and the height, and assuming isotropic and anisotropic shear strength conditions, respectively. The anisotropic shear strength of the compacted soil was determined from the direct shear test for layered soil blocks varying the inclination angle between the horizontal shear surface and the direction of the soil layer. As a result of the analyses, it has been concluded that the appropriate slope inclination f3r a temporary slope could vary in accordance with the consideration of anisotropy. However, the factor of safety as well as the location of the failure surface did not show significant variation.
Based on the critical plane approach, a methodology far predicting the anisotropic strength ot transversely isotropic rock is Proposed. It is assumed that the rock failure is governed by Hoek-Brown failure criterion. In order to establish an anisotropic failure function, Mohr envelope equivalent to the original Hoek-Brown criterion is used and the strength parameters m, s are expressed as scalar functions of orientation. The conjugate gradient method, which is one of the robust optimization techniques, is applied to the failure function for searching the orientation giving the maximum value of the anisotropic function. While most of the existing anisotropic strength models can be applied only when the stress condition is the same as that of conventional triaxial compression test, the proposed model can be applied to the general 3-dimensional stress conditions. Through the simulation of triaxial compression tests for transversely isotropic rock sample, the validity of the proposed method is investigated by comparing the predicted triaxial strengths and inclinations of failure plane.
We report the results of structural field observation and measurement of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) of the diamictitic Hwanggangri Formation distributed in Chungju-Suanbo area of the Okchon Belt, Korea. The outcrops of the Hwanggangri Formation show two types of cleavage in general: slaty cleavage (SI) and crenulation cleavage (5z). 5] cleavage is, however, well observable only in the notheastem (NE) part of study area, while overwhelmed by 52 cleavage in the southwestern (5W) part, indicating stronger later deformation in 5W part of the study area. This partitioning of the study area is corroborated by both IRM and AMS parameters: NE part of the study area is characterized by higher IRM intensity, higher bulk magnetic susceptibility, higher AM5 degree, and by oblate shape of magnetic susceptibility ellipsoid. Their values become drastically lowered toward southwest, and reach to a stable minimum in the whole 5W part of the study area. In addition, degree of both metamorphism and deformation tends to increase gradually from northeast toward southwest and also from northwest toward southeast in the study area. Based on the distribution pattern of the principal axes ( $k_1, k_2, k_3$ axes) of magnetic anisotropy ellipsoids revealed in the NE part of the study area, three episodes of deformation ( $D_1, D_2, D_3$ ) are recognized: D_1$ deformation produced $S_2$ cleavage with NE-5W trend, which is caused by a strong NW-SE tlattening of a coaxial pure shear. $D_2$ deformation produced 5z cleavage characterized by a non-coaxial deformation. It was caused by a ductile or semi-ductile thrusting toward NW and concurrent sinistral shearing along $S_2$ cleavage plane. Lastly, $D_3$ deformation produced tlexural folding of all previous structures with a nearly horizontal NE fold axis. Distribution pattern of the principal axes of magnetic anisotropy ellipsoid from the SW part of the study area, on the other hand, does not show any coherency among sites or samples. We interpret that this dispersed pattern of $k_1, k_2, k_3$ axes together with lower anisotropy strength indicates that magnetic fabrics in the SW part have been disturbed either by a superposition of strong deformation/metamorphism or by a kind of reciprocal strain due to an overlapping of $D_1$ and $D_2$ or by both processes.
A series of consolidated-undrained cubical triaxial tests was performed to investigate the three- dimensional strength characteristics of anisotropic overconsolidated clay. All specimens sampled in field were loaded under conditions of principal stress directions fixed and aligned with the directions during sampling. A sufficient number of tests It was performed to deter.mine the three- dimensional failure surface in the octahedral plane. The adjusted effective friction angles obtained by the stress state projected on the same octahedral plane did not show anisotropy, while the measured effective friction angles showed considerally difference according to the axes of speccimens. Therefore, Lade failure criterion proposed fort isotropic materials could be also used practically for anisotropic overconsolidated clay. The direction of the plastic strain increment wrectors superimposed on the principal stress space was nearly perpendicular to the traces of the failure surface in the octahedral plane.
In superconducting power devices including power cables in which high temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes are utilized, a reliable electrical insulation should be achieved for its maximum performance. For an efficient design of HTS superconducting devices, a comparative evaluation of the mechanical and thermal propperties for various insulation materials at cryogenic temperatures is required. Especially, in the process of the property evaluation of the sheet-shaped insulation materials, anisotropy according to the machining direction should be considered because the mechanical and thermal properties are significantly influenced by the sample orientation. In this study, the cryogenic thermal and mechanical properties of various insulation material sheets such as PPLP, Cryoflex, Teflon, and Kapton were determined considering sample orientation. All samples tested at cryogenic temperature showed significantly higher tensile strength as compared with that of room temperature. The ultimate tensile strength at both temperature conditions significantly depended upon the sample orientation. The thermal properties of the insulation materials exhibited a slight difference among samples depending on the orientation: for the PPLP and Cryoflex, the CD orientation showed larger thermal contraction up to 77 K as compared to the MD one. MD samples in PPLP and Cryoflex showed a lower CTE and thermal contraction which made it more promising as an insulation material due to its comparable CTE with HTS CC tapes.
Super duplex stainless steel has long life in severe environments by showing the enough strength and corrosion resistance. Therefore, the fracture mechanics approach needs to support the structural strength integrity for the used material. In this study, fatigue crack propagation behavior was investigated to super duplex stainless steel with 0.2% nitrogen. The various volume fraction and distribution of austenite structure for applied specimen in test were obtained by changing the heat treatment temperature and cycle. From test results, fatigue crack propagation rate showed two kinds of tendency between da/dN and ${\Delta}K$ according to distribution of austenite structure and structure anisotropy.

In this research, the effect of bedding layer on the tensile failure mechanism of rocks has been investigated using PFC2D. For this purpose, firstly calibration of PFC2d was performed using Brazilian tensile strength. Secondly Brazilian test was performed on the bedding layer. Thickness of layers were 5 mm, 10 mm and 20 mm. in each thickness layer, layer angles changes from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ with increment of $15^{\circ}$. Totally, 21 model were simulated and tested by loading rate of 0.016 mm/s. The results show that when layer angle is less than 15, tensile cracks initiates between the layers and propagate till coalesce with model boundary. Its trace is too high. With increasing the layer angle, less layer mobilizes in failure process. Also, the failure trace is very short. It's to be noted that number of cracks decrease with increasing the layer thickness. Also, Brazilian tensile strength is minimum when bedding layer angle is between $45^{\circ}$ and $75^{\circ}$. The maximum one is related to layer angle of $90^{\circ}$.
Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is being considered as a technology to replace the conventional manufacturing process of titanium alloys. However, coarse β grains, which can extend through several deposited materials, result in strong textures and anisotropy. As a solution, we study the plastic deformation effects of ultrasonic needle peening (UNP) on the microstructure. UNP treated materials deform plastically and the dislocation density increases. Fine α+α' grains with low aspect ratio are observed in the UNP treated specimens. UNP treated WAAM Ti-6Al-4V alloys have higher strength and lower elongation than those characteristics of WAAM Ti-6Al-4V alloys. Due to UNP treatment, the z-axis directional specimens exhibit a greater effect of reducing elongation than do the x-axis directional specimens. The UNP treatment produces fine grains in proportion to the number of times UNP is performed, thereby increasing strength. UNP processes produce a large number of dislocations in the WAAM Ti-6Al-4V alloys, with the most dislocations being formed at the surface.
This study aims to examine the correlation between microstructures and the mechanical properties of two high-strength API X70 linepipe steels with different specimen directions and Moaddition. The microstructure of the Mo-added steel has an irregularly shaped AF, GB matrix with pearlite because of the relatively large deformation in the non-recrystallization temperature region, while that of the Mo-free steel shows a PF matrix with bainitic microstructure. In the Mo-added steel, the M/A (martensite-austenite) in granular bainite (GB) and pearlite act as crack initiation sites with decreased upper shelf energy and an increased ductile to brittle transition temperature (DBTT). Regardless of Mo addition, all of the steels demonstrate higher strength and lower elongation in the T direction than in the L direction because of the short dislocation glide path and ease of pile-up at grain boundaries. In addition, the impact test specimens with T-L direction had a lower impact absorbed energy and higher DBTT than those with the L-T direction because the former exhibit shorter unit crack path compared to the latter.
To estimate nondestructively strength performances of laminated woods, 3-ply parallel- and cross-laminated wood specimens exposed under atmosphere conditions after bending creep test were prepared for this study. The effects of density of species, arrangement of laminae and lamination types on dynamic MOE obtained by flexural vibration were investigated, and regression analyses were conducted in order to estimate static bending strength and bending creep performances. Dynamic MOE of parallel-laminated woods showed 1.0~1.2 times higher values than static bending MOE, and those of cross-laminated woods showed 1.0~1.4 times higher values than static bending MOE. The degree of anisotropy of dynamic MOE perpendicular to the grain of face laminae versus that parallel to the grain of face laminae was markedly decreased by cross-laminating. There were strong correlations between dynamic MOE by flexural vibration and static bending MOE (correlation coefficient r = 0.919~0.972) or bending MOR (correlation coefficient r = 0.811~0.947) of 3-ply laminated woods, and the correlation coefficient were higher in parallel-laminated woods than in cross-laminated woods. It indicated that static bending strength performances were able to be estimated from dynamic MOE by flexural vibration. Also, close correlations between the reciprocal of dynamic MOE by flexural vibration and initial compliance at 0.008 h of 3-ply laminated woods were found (correlation coefficient r = 0.873~0.991). However, the correlation coefficient between the reciprocal of dynamic MOE and creep compliance at 168 h of 3-ply laminated woods was considerably lower than those between dynamic MOE and initial compliance, and it was hard to estimate creep compliance with a high accuracy from dynamic MOE due to the variation of creep deformation.
