  • This paper examines the history of karate, its utilization as military training, and its value as a national defense sport. Originating from Okinawa, karate was introduced into Japanese military training in the modern era and spread worldwide. During World War II, the Japanese military intensified karate training for close-quarters combat. Post-war, karate was introduced to Western society through the U.S. military presence in Japan. In contemporary militaries, various martial arts, including karate, are utilized in training programs such as the U.S. Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) and the Israeli military's Krav Maga. These programs integrate techniques from karate, judo, boxing, and other martial arts to create systems optimized for real combat. In military education, karate enhances individual physical and mental capabilities and improves unit combat effectiveness. Rigorous training develops physical fitness, mental resilience, and practical skills for close-quarters combat. Group training fosters camaraderie and unit cohesion. However, due to the changing nature of modern warfare, it is necessary to reconsider the proportion and methods of martial arts training in military education. With the advancement of high-tech weaponry, team operations have become more critical than individual combat skills. Rather than applying traditional karate techniques unchanged, it is essential to modify and develop them to suit modern warfare. Nevertheless, the value of martial arts training, including karate, remains significant in cultivating key soldier qualities such as physical strength, indomitable spirit, and camaraderie. It is anticipated that militaries worldwide will continue to evolve their martial arts training systems in line with changing times.

  • We designed this study because it is necessary to take health care from middle age for to healthy old age. The purpose of this study was to confirm the effect of middle-aged women on the walking mechanism by applying an exercise program that can achieve the maximum effect through simple exercise regardless of time and place. A total of 20 subjects were selected from middle-aged women aged 45 years or older, with 10 calf-enhancing exercise groups and 10 control groups. As a result of comparing before and after exercise in the calf-enhancing exercise group, the step length left and right, and double support, step time, and speed were improved. As a result of comparing the walking mechanisms of the calf-enhancing exercise group and the non-exercise group after exercise, the step length left and right, and step time left and right were improved. The positive effect of the walking mechanism was shown through the calf-enhancing exercise regardless of time and place. In particular, it is judged that the stride was widened, resulting in an increase in the speed of walking due to the strength of the lower extremities and the shortening of the one-foot support section, resulting in meaningful results. In future studies, it is considered desirable to present measurement data for each life cycle by evaluating all ages, such as adolescents and the elderly, and to provide it as basic data for causing social problems due to lack of normal exercise.

  • We study the dust properties of 192 nearby galaxies from the JINGLE survey using photometric data in the 22-850 ㎛ range. We derive the total dust mass, temperature T, and emissivity index β of the galaxies through the fitting of their spectral energy distribution (SED) using a single modified blackbody model (SMBB). We apply a hierarchical Bayesian approach that reduces the known degeneracy between T and β. Applying the hierarchical approach, the strength of the T-β anticorrelation is reduced from a Pearson correlation coefficient R = -0.79 to R = -0.52. For the JINGLE galaxies we measure dust temperatures in the range 17-30 K and dust emissivity indices β in the range 0.6-2.2. We compare the SMBB model with the broken emissivity law modified blackbody (BMBB) and the two modified blackbody (TMBB) models. The results derived with the SMBB and TMBB are in good agreement, thus applying the SMBB, which comes with fewer free parameters, does not penalize the measurement of the cold dust properties in the JINGLE sample. We investigate the relation between T and β and other global galaxy properties in the JINGLE and Herschel Reference Survey (HRS) sample. We find that β correlates with the stellar mass surface density (R = 0.62) and anticorrelates with the H i mass fraction (MH i/M*, R = -0.65), whereas the dust temperature correlates strongly with the star formation rate normalized by the dust mass (R = 0.73). These relations can be used to estimate T and β in galaxies with insufficient photometric data available to measure them directly through SED fitting.

  • In this paper, we propose a discussion that the feasibility of deploying a deep learning-based detector on the resource-limited board. Although many studies evaluate the detector on machines with high-performed GPUs, evaluation on the board with limited computation resources is still insufficient. Therefore, in this work, we implement the deep-learning detectors and deploy them on the compact board by parsing and optimizing a detector. To figure out the performance of deep learning based detectors on limited resources, we monitor the performance of several detectors with different H/W resource. On COCO detection datasets, we compare and analyze the evaluation results of detection model in On-Board and the detection model in On-GPU in terms of several metrics with mAP, power consumption, and execution speed (FPS). To demonstrate the effect of applying our detector for the military area, we evaluate them on our dataset consisting of thermal images considering the flight battle scenarios. As a results, we investigate the strength of deep learning-based on-board detector, and show that deep learning-based vision models can contribute in the flight battle scenarios.

  • The Korea Augmentation Satellite System (KASS) satellite was successfully launched and service is being started. By receiving messages transmitted from the KASS satellite, users can employ the messages to improve positioning accuracy or to verify the integrity of Global Positioning System (GPS). In this paper, we propose a test method for a beam-formed GPS receiver developed to improve the survivability of KASS augmented messages that can enhance positioning accuracy even in an environment with jamming or interfering signals. Through the test method proposed in this paper, quantitative verification is performed for a beam-formed GPS receiver aimed at maintaining the augmented navigation solution to which KASS augmented messages are applied by tracking the KASS signal as much as possible under conditions where the jamming signal strength is gradually increasing. In addition, the proposed test method includes three conditions; first, a static lab test method for repeated verification of functions under the same conditions; second, a static outdoor test method for performance verification in an operating environment of a platform equipped with the beam-formed GPS receiver; and finally, a dynamic lab test method for performance verification of a moving platform equipped with the beam-formed GPS receiver toward a jammer. In this paper, we propose a method for simulating the jamming signal incident direction through the phase delay of an RF cable designed to prevent unintentional jamming signal emission in both lab and outdoor tests, and a method of applying test software for injecting a jamming signal to compare the survivability performance consistently according to the presence or absence of beamforming signal processing. Through the proposed test method, it was verified that the augmented navigation solution could be output for a longer time period when the beamforming signal processing was applied to the KASS satellite signal in the beam-formed GPS receiver.

  • Geopolymers are part of a class of materials characterized by properties combining polymers, ceramics, and cement. These include exceptionally high thermal and chemical stability, excellent mechanical strength and durability in aggressive environments. This work deals with the synthesis, characterization, and sustainability evaluation of GPGBFS-MK geopolymers by alkaline activation of a granulated blast furnace slag-metakaolin mixture. In the first step, elemental and oxide analyses by XRF and EDS showed that the main constituents of GPGBFS-MK geopolymers are silicon, sodium, and aluminium oxides. The structural analyses by XRD and FTIR confirmed that the geopolymerization for GPGBFS-MK geopolymers did occur, accompanied by the formation of disordered networks from the blends and a modification to the microstructure by the geopolymerization process. Similarly, the microstructural study made by SEM showed that the GPGBFS-MK geopolymers are constituted by aluminosilicates in the form of dense clusters on which are adsorbed particles of unreacted GBFS in the form of spheroids and white residues of the alkaline activating solution. In addition, the study of the sustainability evaluation of GPGBFS-MK geopolymers showed that the water absorption of geopolymeric materials is lower than that of OPC cement. As for the elevated temperature resistance, the analyses indicated an excellent elevated temperature resistance of GPGBFS-MK. In the same way, the study of the resistance to chemical aggressions showed that the GPGBFS-MK geopolymeric materials are unattackable, contrary to the OPC cement-based materials which are strongly altered.

  • In site characterization of high-level radioactive waste, discontinuity(joint) distribution and rock mass classification, which are key evaluation parameters in the rock engineering field, were evaluated using deep boreholes in the Wonju granite and Chuncheon granite, which belong to Mesozoic Jurassic era. To evaluate joint distribution characteristics, fracture zones and joint surfaces extracted from ATV data were used, and major joint sets were evaluated along with joint frequency according to depth, dip direction, and dip. Both the Wonju and Chuncheon granites that were studied showed a tendency for the frequency of joints to increase linearly with depth, and joints with high angles were relatively widely distributed. In addition, relatively large amounts of weathering tended to occur even in deep depth due to groundwater inflow through high-angle joints. RQD values remained consistently low even at considerable depth. Meanwhile, joint groups with low angles showed different joint characteristics from joint sets with high angles. Rock mass classification was performed based on RMR system, and along with rock mass classification for 50 m intervals where uniaxial compressive strength was performed, continuous rock mass classification according to depth was performed using velocity log data and geostatistical techniques. The Wonju granite exhibited a superior rock mass class compared to the Chuncheon granite. In the 50 m interval and continuous rock mass classification, the shallow part of the Wonju granite showed a higher class than the deep part, and the deep part of the Chuncheon granite showed a higher class than the shallow part.

  • Hair dyeing, hair perming, and daily hair dryer use can substantially damage hair. Consequently, the demand for products containing natural ingredients for the care of damaged hair is growing. Although polyphenols with antioxidant effects are often used for hair conditioning, few studies have focused on hair conditioning, and the potential of Sparassis latifolia mushroom extract for hair improvement has not been evaluated to date. In this study, the antioxidant activity of and polyphenol content in hot water, 70% and 100% ethanol (EtOH), n-hexane, ethyl acetate (EtOAc), and water extracts of S. latifolia were analyzed. A hair treatment containing S. latifolia extract was prepared, and its effect on damaged hair was evaluated. The highest antioxidant activity was observed in the hot water and EtOAc extracts. Moreover, polyphenol analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy confirmed that the EtOAc fraction has relatively high contents of specific polyphenols beneficial for hair. Based on these results, a hair treatment containing S. latifolia extract was applied to damaged hair, and hair improvement was evaluated using hair thickness, tensile strength, and scanning electron microscopy. The hair treatment containing 70% EtOH extract effectively improved hair condition. We postulate that this improvement was caused by the high hydrophobic polyphenol content in the 70% EtOH extract.

  • JCR's categorization significantly impacts the evaluation of research achievements in the field, particularly in information science and library science (IS & LS). Publishing in prestigious IS & LS journals often leads to lower evaluations due to their lower impact factor rankings. In contrast, publishing in higher-ranked Management Information Systems (MIS) journals classified under the IS & LS category is evaluated more favorably. Accordingly, this study analyzed the intersection of Library and Information Science (LIS) and MIS through an analysis of journal authors. This analysis was based on previous research that identified detailed subject areas of academic journals categorized under the IS & LS category in the JCR. As a result of the analysis, the intersection between the subfields of LIS and MIS was not substantial, and the strength of the connection was weak. Additionally, approximately 55% of universities in Seoul with LIS departments use JCR's journal rankings by subject category to assess research achievements. The findings suggest that JCR's subject category classification may negatively influence researchers' evaluations and potentially distort the academic publishing landscape. In the future, the issues with research achievement evaluation standards will need to be supplemented and improved. The results of this study are expected to serve as valuable fundamental data for policy improvement.
