  • The flow characteristics of a turbulent buoyant jet were experimentally investigated using a single-frame PIV system. The Reynolds number based on the nozzle exit velocity and nozzle diameter was about Re=5$\times$10$^3$. The instantaneous velocity fields in the streamwise plane passing the jet axis were measured in the near field X/D <11 with and without the temperature gradient. By ensemble averaging the instantaneous velocity fields, the spatial distributions of mean velocity, vorticity, and higher-order statistics up to third order were obtained. The temperature difference of 10$\^{C}$ does not affect a significant influence to the flow structure in the near field, but the total entrainment rate is increased slightly. The entrainment rate shows a linear variation with the streamwise distance in the region after X/D=5.0.

  • A numerical simulation is performed fur developing turbulent flow in a strongly curved 180 deg pipe and its downstream tangent by a new solution code(PowerCFD) which adopts an unstructured cell-centered method. The governing equations are discretized as the full elliptic from of the equations of motion. Three typical two-equation turbulence models of low-Reynolds-number form are used to approximate the turbulent stress field. Solutions fur both streamwise and circumferential velocity components are compared with the experimental data by Azzola et at.(1986). The ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ model by Wilcox(1988) is found to give better prediction performance than the other two. Predicted secondary velocities and streamwise velocity component contours at sequential longitudinal stations are also presented in order to enable a detailed description of the complete flow. It is also found that, in the bend both mean streamwise and secondary velocities never achieve a fully-developed state and the code is capable of producing very well the complex nature of steady flow in a strongly curved pipe.

  • The near wake behind a sinusoidal cylinder at Re=5200 has been investigated using DPIV system. The velocity fields, streamlines and vorticity contours of the mean flow were compared at the nodal, saddle and middle planes with those of a right circular cylinder. For the sinusoidal cylinder, the vortex core moves downstream and the vortex formation region is expanded in streamwise direction while suppressed in transverse direction at the nodal plane. At the saddle and the middle plane the vortex spread in both streamwise and transverse directions, forming the maximum vortex region at the saddle plane.

  • The laminar boundary layer along a streamwise corner formed by two flat plates intersecting at right angle is measured by using Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) technique. The free stream velocity ranges from 2.96m/s to 3.0m/s. The angle of incidence of the corner is set to 1.2 degree providing slightly favourable pressure gradient to ensure a laminar flow in the corner region. A round shape leading edge is used and the length of the model is about 1000mm. In the bisector plane, the measurement data show separation type velocity profiles having an inflection point which is a typical characteristic of laminar corner boundary layers. As the distance away from the bisector plane increases, velocity profiles are found to change into the Blasius profile. The change completes around half length of the boundary layer thickness in the bisector plane away from the bisector plane along the plate. In the bisector plane, the growth characteristic of the boundary layer thickness and the approximate similarity of velocity profiles are confirmed from the measurement data.

  • This paper deals with the experimental study on the characteristics of current in the ocean engineering basin of KRISa, The unsteady characteristics of the flow is examined by analyzing time histories of streamwise velocity at some points. The major frequency of the fluctuating velocity was found by the spectral analysis of the measured data. The vertical and spanwise distributions of time averaged velocities were also examined. Especially, vertical distributions of the streamwise velocities with guide vanes are compared with those without guide vanes and it confirms the effeciency of the guide vane to improve the uniformity of the vertical profile of streamwise velocity. Finally, the measured data are regressed to give the relation between revolutions per minute(r.p.m.) and mean velocity.

  • Experimental investigations of the longitudinal vortices, which are produced by wing type vortex generators set up behind a circular cylinder in a rectangular channel, are presented. When the circular cylinder is set up in the rectangular channel, a horseshoe vortex is formed just upsteam of the circular cylinder. It generates a turbulent wake region behind the circular cylinder. Therefore, the region of the pressure loss behind the circular cylinder in increased and the size of the wake is small. These problems can be achieved by longitudinal vortices which are generated by wing-type vortex generator. In order to control the strength of longitudinal vortices, the angle of attack of the vortex generators is varied from 20 degree to 45, but the spacing between the vortex generators is fixed 6cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity measurements are made using a five-hole probe. The vorticity field and streamwise velocity contour are obtained from the velocity field. The following results are obtained. Circulation strength is the maximum value when the angle of attack($\beta$) is $30^{\circ}$, and the vorticity field and streamwise velocity contour in case of $\beta$=$20^{\circ}$ show the trend similar to these in case of $\beta$=$30^{\circ}$, but do not in case of $\beta$=$45^{\circ}$.

  • Experimental investigations of the flow structure and heat transfer enhancement in a channel with a built-in circular cylinder and a wing-let type vortex generator are presented. Without any vortex generators, relatively low heat transfer takes place in the downstream of the circular cylinder where is a recirculation region with low velocity fluid is formed. However with a wing-let type longitudinal vortex generator in the wake region behind the cylinder, heat transfer in the region can be enhanced. In order to control the strength of longitudinal vortices, the angle of attack of the vortex generators is varied from $20^{circ} to 45^{\circ}$, but spacings between the vortex generations are fixed to be 5 mm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity field downstream of the vortex generator is measured by a five-hole pressure probe, and the hue-capturing method using thermochromatic liquid crystals has been used to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. The vorticity field and streamwise velocity contour are obtained from the velocity field. Streamwise distributions of averaged Stanton number on the measurement planes show very similar trends for all the experimental cases($\beta=20^{circ}, 30^{circ} and 45^{\circ}$). Circulation strength and heat transfer coefficient have the maximum values when the angle of attack($\beta$) is $30^{\circ}$.

  • Oil-film flow visualizations and three-dimensional flow measurements using a five-hole probe have been conducted to investigate three-dimensional flow characteristics and total pressure losses of a row of film-cooling jets injected in spanwise direction. For several span-to-diameter ratios, experiments are performed in the case of three velocity ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5. The flow measurements show that downstream flow due to the injection is characterized by a single streamwise vortex instead of a pair of counter-rotating vortices, which appear in the case of streamwise injection, and the vortex strength strongly depends on the velocity ratio. Regardless of the velocity*y ratio, presence of the spanwise film-cooling jets always produces total pressure loss, which is pronounced when the velocity ratio is large. It has also been found that the production of the total pressure loss is closely related to the secondary vortical flow. In addition, effects of the span-to-diameter ratio on the flow and total pressure loss are discussed in detail.

  • In this study, we consider the characteristics of channel flow in the presence of an infinite streamwise array of equispaced identical rotating circular cylinders. This flow configuration can be regarded as a model representing a micro channel or an internal heat exchanger with cylindrical vortex generators. A numerical parametric study has been carried out by varying Reynolds number based on the bulk mean velocity and the cylinder diameter, and the gap between the cylinders and the channel wall for some selected angular speeds. An immersed boundary method was employed to facilitate implementing the cylinders on a Cartesian grid system. No-slip condition is employed at all solid boundaries including the cylinders, and the flow is assumed to be periodic in the streamwise direction. The presence of the rotating circular cylinders arranged periodically in the streamwise direction causes a significant topological change of the flow, leading to increase of mean friction on the channel walls. More quantitative results as well as qualitative physical explanations are presented to justify the effectiveness of rotating cylinders to modify flow topology, which might be used to enhance heat transfer on the channel walls.

  • In order to investigate the relation between wall vorticity and streamwise velocity fluctuations in a turbulent boundary layer, a wall vorticity probe has been developed, which consists of two hot-wires on the wall aligned in V configuration. Although the measured intensity of spanwise wall vorticity fluctuations is somewhat lower than previous results, the intensity of streamwise wall vorticity fluctuations is in good agreement with them. It has been shown that the measured intensity of spanwise wall vorticity fluctuations is affected by transverse length of the wall vorticity probe. Instantaneous streamwise and spanwise wall vorticity fluctuations are compared with the results of DNS. Probability density function of spanwise wall vorticity fluctuations shows good agreement with previous results and is different from that of streamwise wall vorticity fluctuations. Energy spectrum of streamwisw wall vorticity fluctuations is lower than that of spanwise wall vorticity fluctuations in low frequency region.
