Currently, High-efficient video coding (HEVC) has become the most promising video coding technology. However, the implementation of HEVC in video streaming systems is restricted by factors such as cost, design complexity, and compatibility with existing systems. While HEVC is considering deploying to various systems with different reached methods, H264/AVC can be one of the best choices for current video streaming systems. This paper presents an adaptive method for manipulating video streams using video coding on an integrated circuit (IC) designed with a private network processor. The proposed system allows to transfer multimedia data from cameras or other video sources to client. For this work, a series of video or audio packages from the video source are forwarded to the designed IC via HDMI cable, called Tx transmitter. The Tx processes input data into a real-time stream using its own protocol according to the Real-Time Transmission Protocol for both video and audio, then Tx transmits output packages to the video client though internet. The client includes hardware or software video/audio decoders to decode the received packages. Tx uses H264/AVC or HEVC video coding to encode video data, and its audio coding is PCM format. By handling the message exchanges between Tx and the client, the transmitted session can be set up quickly. Output results show that transmission's throughput can be achieved about 50 Mbps with approximately 80 msec latency.
Existing streaming mechanisms have no consideration for the characteristics of streaming applications because they only consider network stability. In this paper, in order to overcome limitations of the previous work on video streaming, we propose a new video streaming mechanism called "HAViS(Hybrid Approach for Video Streaming)". The proposed mechanism includes more sophisticated features that consider both network and user requirements. Therefore, the HAViS mechanism improves the network stability by adjusting the sending rate of video stream based on the network state and it also provides the smooth playback by preventing the buffer underflow or overflow. Moreover, it is designed to take into consideration the streaming video content. Through the simulation, we prove that the HAViS mechanism efficiently uses the buffer resources and provides improved network stability and smooth playback.

As the demand for video streaming has been rapidly increasing recently, video streaming schemes for increasing the efficiency of radio resource has attracted a lot of attention. In this paper, we propose an adaptive video streaming scheme to enhance the efficiency of video streaming by using receivers' caching capability. The proposed streaming scheme can transmit video data on a broadcast basis even when two clients request different video data, only if specific conditions satisfied, while existing schemes can only transmit video data on a broadcast basis only when two clients request the same video data. In this paper, we mathematically derive the average transmission time of the proposed scheme and the approximation of the average transmission time. The accuracy of the mathematical analysis is verified by simulations. Mathematical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce the average transmission time, compared to the existing scheme.

In this paper, we implement the eXclusive OR-based Cast (XC) system that is a video streaming system using exclusive OR operations, and measure various performance metrics in wireless local area network (WLAN) environments. In addition, we investigate the performance improvement of the XC system considering various practical video streaming environments, while conventional studies analyzed the performance of XC through computer simulations in limited environments. To this end, we propose new control messages such as STR_REQ_MSG (SRM) that clients transmit to a video streaming server and STR_CON_MSG (SCM) that is used for the video streaming server to control the clients, and develop a new protocol by using the new control messages. According to the various measurement results using the implemented XC system, XC video streaming system can reduce the consumption of network bandwidth by 8.6% on average and up to 25% compared to the conventional video streaming system. In addition, the outage probability can be also reduced up to 76%.

The increasing popularity of HTTP adaptive video streaming services has dramatically increased bandwidth requirements on operator networks, which attempt to shape their traffic through Deep Packet inspection (DPI). However, Google and certain content providers have started to encrypt their video services. As a result, operators often encounter difficulties in shaping their encrypted video traffic via DPI. This highlights the need for new traffic classification methods for encrypted HTTP adaptive video streaming to enable smart traffic shaping. These new methods will have to effectively estimate the quality representation layer and playout buffer. We present a new machine learning method and show for the first time that video quality representation classification for (YouTube) encrypted HTTP adaptive streaming is possible. The crawler codes and the datasets are provided in [43,44,51]. An extensive empirical evaluation shows that our method is able to independently classify every video segment into one of the quality representation layers with 97% accuracy if the browser is Safari with a Flash Player and 77% accuracy if the browser is Chrome, Explorer, Firefox or Safari with an HTML5 player.

The use of scalable video coding scheme has been regarded as a promising solution for guaranteeing the quality of service of the video streaming over the Internet because it is a capable coding scheme to perform quality adaptation depending on network conditions. In this paper, we use a streaming model that transmits base layer using TCP and enhancement layers using DCCP, which try to provide transmission reliability of the BL and TCP friendliness. Unlike pervious works, the proposed algorithm performs rate adaptation based on playout buffer status. The PoB status of the client is sent back periodically to the server and serves as a network congestion indicator. Experimental results show that our scheme improves streaming quality comparing with pervious scheme in the case of not only constant/dynamic background flows but also VBR-encoded video sequence.

The video streaming technologies are used in diverse areas including aerospace. UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is still being developed so that we are able to use the UAV not only in military areas but also in civil areas. Remotely monitoring and observing a certain area is possible via using video streaming service based on the UAV nowadays. However, UAV is vulnerable to weather conditions, plane's weight, battery capacity and so on, which makes many restrictions of flight time and video streaming services. In order to prolong the video streaming services, we can use a number of UAVs, fly them one by one, and switch video streaming channels. In the paper, we propose the methods how to interchange UAVs' missions and their video streaming channels to provide seamless video stream services.

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) adaptive streaming has become a new trend in video delivery. An HTTP adaptive streaming client needs to effectively estimate resource availability and demand. However, due to the bitrate of the video encoded in variable bitrate (VBR) mode, a bitrate mismatch problem occurs. With the rising demand for mobile devices, the likelihood of cases where two or more HTTP adaptive streaming clients share the same network bottleneck and competing for available bandwidth will increase. These mismatch and competition issues lead to network congestion, which adversely affects the Quality of Experience (QoE). To solve these problem, we propose a video rate adaptation scheme for the HTTP video streaming to guarantee and optimize the QoE. The proposed scheme estimates the available bandwidth according to the bitrate of each segment and also schedules the segment request time to expedite the response to the bandwidth variation. We used a multi-client simulation to prove that our scheme can effectively cope with drastic changes in the connection throughput and video bitrate.
The Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP(DASH) is envisioned to evolve to meet an increasing demand on providing seamless video streaming services in the near future. The DASH performance heavily depends on the client's adaptive quality selection algorithm that is not included in the standard. The existing conventional algorithms are basically based on a procedural algorithm that is not easy to capture and reflect all variations of dynamic network and traffic conditions in a variety of network environments. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a novel quality selection mechanism based on the Deep Q-Network(DQN) model, the DQN-based DASH Adaptive Bitrate(ABR) mechanism. The proposed mechanism adopts a new reward calculation method based on five major performance metrics to reflect the current conditions of networks and devices in real time. In addition, the size of the consecutive video segment to be downloaded is also considered as a major learning metric to reflect a variety of video encodings. Experimental results show that the proposed mechanism quickly selects a suitable video quality even in high error rate environments, significantly reducing frequency of quality changes compared to the existing algorithm and simultaneously improving average video quality during video playback.

Recently, hybrid CDN/P2P video streaming architecture is specially designed and deployed to achieve the scalability of P2P networks and the desired low delay and high throughput of CDNs. In this paper, we propose a cooperative video streaming and active node buffer management technique in hybrid CDN/P2P architecture. The key idea of this streaming strategy is to minimize network latency such as jitter and packet loss and to maximize the QoS(quality of service) by effectively and efficiently utilizing the information sharing of file location in CDN's proxy server which is an end node located close to a user and P2P network. Through simulation, we show that the proposed cooperative video streaming and active node buffer management technique based on CDN and P2P network improves the performance of realtime video streaming compared to previous methods.
