The objective of this study is to analyse the spray characteristics according to the injection duration under the ambient pressure condition, and the injection timing in the visualization engine. In order to investigate the spray behavior, we obtained the spray velocity using the PIV method that has been an useful optical diagnostics technology, and calculated the vorticity from spray velocity component. These results elucidated the relationship between vorticity and entropy which play an important role in the diffusion process for the early injection case and the stratification process for the late injection case. In addition, we quantified the homogeneous diffusion rate of spray using the entropy analysis based on the Boltzmann's statistical thermodynamics. Using these method, it was found that the concentration of spray droplets caused by the increase of injection duration is more effective than the increase of momentum dissipation. We also found that the homogeneous diffusion rate increased as the injection timing moved to the early intake stroke process and BTDC $50^{\circ}$ was the most efficient injection timing for the stratified mixture formation during the compression stroke.

According to the increasing concern on the global environment, the $CO_2$ regulation has been discussed including automobile emission regulation. In order to cope with this rapid changing circumstances, the development of an ultra low emission and super fuel economy automobile is essential. Direct injection LPG engine is the one of the possible future engine to maximize the engine efficiency. This experimental study for the development of direct injection LPG engine technology is promoted with two parts; spray characteristics of high pressure swirl injector, and performance characteristics of direct injection LPG engine. Engine characteristics according to the fuel was analyzed in order to establish stratified combustion technology for LPG engine by using the DISI engine. In the engine experiment, control system was manufactured for gasoline and LPG fuel. The engine was modified 2,000 cc GDI engine (fuel supply device, fuel injection device). Through this experiment, engine operating condition, engine speed and spark timing (MBT), fuel injection position, and fuel rate were investigated.
Hydrogen-dimethy ether (DME) and hydrogen-diesel compression ignition engine combustion were investigated and compared each other in a single cylinder compression ignition engine. Hydrogen and DME were used as low carbon alternative fuels to reduce green house gases and pollutant. Hydrogen was injected at the intake manifold with an injection pressure of 0.5 MPa at fixed injection timing, $-210^{\circ}CA$ aTDC. DME and diesel were injected directly into the cylinder through the common-rail injection system at injection pressure of 30 MPa. DME and diesel inejction timing was varied to find the optimum CI combustion to reduce CO, HC and NOx emissions. When DME was injected early, CO and HC emissions were high while NOx emission was low. Fuel consumption, heat release rate, and exhaust emissions were measured to analyze each combustion characteristics of each ignition promoter. Fuel consumption was decreased when diesel was used as an ignition promoter. This is due to the lower volatility of diesel which created more stratified charge than DME.
As advantages of LPG-DI engine, LPG is directly injected into combustion chamber during compression stroke to reduce compression temperature, prevent knock and spontaneous combustion, and adjust engine output using the amount of directly injected fuel, thereby reducing pumping loss caused by throttle valve. Stratified charge can be supplied nearby spark plugs to allow for overall lean combustion, which improves thermal efficiency and can cope with problems regarding emission regulations. In addition, it is characterized by free designing of intake manifold. Despite the fact that LPG-DI has many advantages as described above, there is lack of detailed investigation and study on spray characteristics, combustion flame characteristics, and ignition probability. In this study, a visualization experiment system that consists of visualization combustion chamber, air supply control system, emission control system, LPG fuel supply system, electronic control system and image data acquisition system was designed and manufactured. For supply of stratified charge in the combustion chamber, alignment of injector and spark plugs was made linear.

We have assessed the applicability of the thermal-hydraulic system analysis code, SPACE, to a small modular reactor called SMART. For the assessment, the experimental data from a scale-down integral-test facility, SMART-ITL, were used. It was conformed that the SPACE code unrealistically calculates the safety injection flow rate through the CMT and SIT during a small-break loss-of-coolant experiment. This unrealistic behavior was due to the overprediction of interfacial heat transfer at the steam-water interface in a vertically stratified flow in the tanks. In this study, a special thermal-hydraulic component model has been developed to realistically calculate the interfacial heat transfer when a strong non-equilibrium two-phase flow is formed in the CMT or SIT. Additionally, we developed a special heat structure model, which analytically calculates the heat transfer from the hot steam to the cold tank wall. The combination of two models for the tank are called the special component model. We assessed it using the SMART-ITL passive safety injection system (PSIS) test data. The results showed that the special component model well predicts the transient behaviors of the CMT and SIT.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) has attracted attention as a alternative fuel. The lean-burn LPG direct injection engine is a promising technology because it has an advantage of lower harmful emissions. This study aims to investigate the effect of combustion strategy and excess air ratio on combustion and emission characteristics in lean-burn LPG direct injection engine. Fuel consumption and combustion stability were measured with change of the ignition timing and injection timing at various air/fuel ratio conditions. The lean combustion characteristics were evaluated as a function of the excess air ratio with the single injection and multiple injection strategy. Furthermore, the feasibility of lean operation with stratified mixture was assessed when comparing the combustion and emission characteristics with premixed lean combustion.

A numerical analysis has been perfonned to estimate the effect of turbulent penetration and thermal stratified flow in the branch lines piping. This phenomenon of thermal stratification are usually observed in the piping lines of the safety related systems and may be identified as the source of fatigue in the piping system due to the thermal stress loading which are associated with plant operating modes. The turbulent penetration length reaches to $1^{st}$ valve in safety injection piping from reactor coolant system (RCS) at normal operation for nuclear power plant when a coolant does not leak out through valve. At the time, therefore, the thermal stratification does not appear in the piping between RCS piping and $1^{st}$ valve of safety injection piping. When a coolant leak out through the $1^{st}$ valve by any damage, however, the thermal stratification can occur in the safety injection piping. At that time, the maximum temperature difference of fluid between top and bottom in the piping is estimated about $50^{\circ}C$.

Recently GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine is spotlighted to achieve higher thermal efficiency under partial loads and better performance at full loads. To realize this system, it is essential to make both stratified combustion and homogeneous combustion. When compared to PFI(Port Fuel Injection) engine, GDI engine needs more complicated control and optimal design with injection system. In addition, spray pattern must be optimized according to injection timing because ambient pressure in combustion chamber is also varied. Thus spray structure should be analyzed in details to meet various conditions. In this experimental study, two types of visualization system were developed to simulate compression stroke and intake stroke, respectively. With an increase of the ambient pressure, the penetration length tends to decrease due to rising resistance caused by the drag force of the ambient air. Spray characteristics impinged on the piston has a significant effect on mixture stratification around the spark plug. These results provide the information on macroscopic spray structure and design factors far developing GDI injector.

In-cylinder spray flow motion plays an important in the adjustment of mixture preparation with a fundamental spray characteristics and in-cylinder flow field well in direct-injection gasoline engine. In this study, the fundamental spray characteristics such as mean drop size, velocity distribution, spray angle were measured and in-cylinder spray flow motion was visualized in order to optimize intake port, piston top land and combustion chamber shapes in the development stage of mass-produced G야 engine. For these experiments, the PDPA measurements and Mie scattering technique were used for detailed spray characteristics and in-cylinder spray motions were obtained by use of ICCD camera through the single-cylinder optical engine. From the experimental results, the test injector shows a good low-end linearity between the dynamic flow and fuel injection pulse width and the fuel spray of 20mm or less in SMD with good spray symmetry. In addition, the in-cylinder tumble flow has more effect on the homogeneous mixture formation than that of in-cylinder swirl flow at early injection mode and the in-cylinder swirl flow plays a better role of stratified mixture preparation than tumble flow at late injection mode.
The spray structures under the stratified and homogeneous charge condition of a gasoline direct injection were investigated in a visualized constant volume chamber. The chamber pressure was controlled from 0.1 MPa to 0.9 MPa by the high pressure nitrogen and the chamber temperatures of $25^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$ were controlled by the band type heater. The fuel, iso-octane was injected by a 6-hole injector with the pressures of 7 MPa and 12 MPa. From the experiments results, it is confirmed that at lower chamber pressure, the penetration length and spray angle are mainly affected by the chamber temperature with the vaporization of the fuel droplets and generated vortices at the end region of the spray. And at higher chamber pressure, the penetration lengths at the end of the injection were about 50~60% of that at lower chamber pressure regardless of the chamber temperature and the effect of fuel injection pressure is larger than that of the chamber temperature which results from larger penetration lengths at higher fuel injection pressure than at lower fuel injection pressure regardless of the chamber temperatures.
