As the measurement of strain-gage type cone penetrometer is influenced by the temperature change during penetration, the temperature is a factor producing an error of the cone tip resistance. In this study, the 0.5 mm diameter temperature transducer and 7 mm diameter micro cone penetrometer are manufactured by using FBG sensors to evaluate the effect of temperature on the cone tip resistance. Design concepts include the cone configuration, sensor installation and the temperature compensation process. The test shows that the tip resistance measured by strain gauge is affected by the temperature change. The error of the tip resistance increases with an increase in temperature change, while the temperature effect on the tip resistance of FBG cone is effectively compensated by using FBG temperature transducer. Temperature compensated tip resistance of the strain gauge cone shows the good matched profile with FBG cone which performs real-time temperature compensation during penetration. This study demonstrates that the temperature compensation by using FBG sensor is an effective method to produce the more reliable cone tip resistance.

This study investigates an existing steel plate girder railroad bridge after superstructure rehabilitation to monitor static and dynamic responses using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors. This paper also presents an experimental technique to estimate the vertical deflection of the bridge using FBG sensors. Seven FBG sensors are multiplexed in a single optical fiber and installed in parallel pairs along the length of the bridge, with one set at the top flange and the other at the bottom flange. In addition to FBG sensors, a conventional electric strain gauge and anLVDT are installed at the mid-span of the bridge for comparison. A test train consisting of one locomotive is placed at the center of the bridge to produce the maximum static effect. The train is also made to pass over the bridge at different speeds ranging from 10 km/h to 90 km/h to monitor the dynamic response of the bridge. This study demonstrates that the measured strains using the FBG sensor compared well with the readings from the electric strain gauge. The results show that the proposed instrumentation technique is capable of estimating the vertical deflection of the bridge for various loading conditions, which is crucial in structural health monitoring. Several dynamic characteristics of the bridge were also identified.

The blade vibration problem of bladed disk is the most critical subject to consider since it directly affects the stable performance of the engine as well as life of the engine. Especially, due to complicated vibration pattern of the bladed disk, more effort was required for vibration analysis and test. The research of measuring the vibration of the bladed disk, using NSMS(Non-intrusive stress measurement) instead of Aeromechanics testing method requiring slip ring or telemetry system with strain gauge, was successful. These testing can report the actual stresses seen on the blades; detect synchronous resonances that are the source of high cycle fatigue (HCF) in blades; measure individual blade mis-tuning and coupled resonances in bladed disks. In order to minimize the error being created due to heat expansion, the tip timing sensor is installed parallel to the blade trailing edge, yielding optimal result. Also, when working on finite element analysis, the whole bladed disk has gone through three-dimensional analysis, evaluating the family mode. The result of the analysis matched well with the test result.
Background: This study aimed to examine the repeatability of hamstring strength during maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) and to examine the sex difference. Design: Quasi-experiment design. Methods: The study recruited 23 healthy young individuals as participants. Hamstring flexibility was measured before and after MVCs by active knee extension test. Five trials of MVCs were performed, and hip extension forces were measured using a strain gauge during MVCs. Repeatability was confirmed by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and coefficient of variation, and the difference between male and female participants was confirmed by independent samples t-test. Results: The forces measured during MVCs were significantly different between men and women over five trials. We observed the minimum and maximum force production at the first and fifth trial of MVCs in both men and women. Excellent to moderate reliability of the hamstring strength during MVCs was found in men (ICC range, 0.70-0.98) and women (ICC range, 0.66-0.90). There was no significant difference in hamstring flexibility between men and women. Conclusion: In clinical settings, we recommend excluding the first trial of MVCs in both men and women. Additionally, performing at least three trials of MVCs would be useful to improve the reliability of the baseline measures in women.

In this study, we conducted verification of key influencing factors during cone penetration testing using the developed Mini Cone Penetration Tester (Mini-CPT), and compared the experimental results with empirical formulas to validate the equipment. The Mini-CPT was designed to measure cone penetration resistance through a Strain Gauge, and the resistance values were calibrated using a Load Cell. Moreover, the influencing factors were verified using a model ground constituted in a soil box. The primary influencing factors examined were the boundary effect of the soil box, the distance between cone penetration points, and the cone penetration speed. For the verification of these factors, the experiment was conducted with the model ground having a relative density of 63.76% in the soil box. It was observed that the sidewall effect was considerably significant, and the cone penetration resistance measured at subsequent penetration points was higher due to the influence between penetration points. However, within the speed range considered, the effect of penetration speed was almost negligible. The measured cone penetration resistance was compared with predicted values obtained from literature research, and the results were found to be similar. It is anticipated that using the developed Mini-CPT for constructing model grounds in the laboratory will lead to more accurate geotechnical property data.

Clear aligners are popular in the field of dental orthodontic treatment because they offer a discreet alternative to braces due to their use of transparent materials. They are formed from flat transparent polymer materials by hot pressed molding. It is necessary to know the mechanical properties of the polymer materials to be able to form the exact shapes of the clear aligners. However, this information is not publicly available. In this study, we present a method to reliably measure the mechanical properties of clear aligner polymer materials and analyze the factors effecting these mechanical properties. First, we surveyed standards related to the mechanical properties of polymer materials to obtain reliable data. Consequently, ISO 527 was selected for use in this study because of the size and thickness of the flat transparent polymer material. The uniaxial tensile tester was constructed and it was verified whether displacement of a crosshead could be regarded as a displacement of gauge-length by optical analysis. Uniaxial tensile tests of three thicknesses from three different companies were performed and each engineering stress-strain curve was measured. Tensile strengths and elastic moduli were obtained by analysis of the stress-strain curves. The tensile strength and elastic modulus of ISO 527 was found to be approximately 50MPa and 2.3GPa, respectively. Both values showed material and thickness dependency.
Statement of problem: The proper contact relation between adjacent teeth in each arch plays an important role in the stability and maintenance of the integrity of the dental arches. Proximal contact has been defined as the area of a tooth that is in close association, connection, or touch with an adjacent tooth in the same arch. Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a digital device for measuring the proximal tooth contact tightness by pulling a thin stainless steel strip (2mm wide, 0.03mm thick) inserted between proximal tooth contact. Material and method: This device consists of measuring part, sensor part, motor part and body part. The stainless steel strip was connected to a stain gauge. The strain gauge was designed to convert the frictional force into a compressive force. This compressive force was detected as a electrical signal and the electrical signal was digitalized by a A/D converter. The digital signals were displayed by a micro-processor. The pulling speed was 8mm/s. Results: For testing reliability of the device in vivo, two healthy young adults (A, B) participated in this experiment. The tightness of proximal tooth contact between the second premolar and the first molar of mandible (subject A) and maxilla (subject B) was measured fifteen times for three days at rest. We double-checked the accuracy of the device with a Universal Testing Machine. Output signals from the Universal Testing Machine and the measuring device were compared. Regression analysis showed high linearity between these two signals. In vivo test, no significant differences were found between measurements. Conclusion: This device has shown to he capable of producing reliable and reproducible results in measuring proximal tooth contact. Therefore, it was considered that this device was appropriate to apply clinically.
For the last decade, the hi-directional testing method has been advantageous over the conventional pile load testing method in many aspects. However, because the hi-directional test uses a loading mechanism entirely different from that of the conventional pile load testing method, many investigators and practicing engineers have been concerned that the hi-directional test would give inaccurate results, especially about the pile head settlement behavior. Therefore, a hi-directional load test and the conventional top-down load test were executed on 1.5 m diameter cast-in-situ concrete piles at the same time and site. Strain gauges were placed on the piles. The two tests gave similar load transfer curves at various depth of piles. However, the top-down equivalent curve constructed from the hi-directional load test results predicted the pile head settlement under the pile design load to be about one half of that predicted by the conventional top-down load test. To improve the prediction accuracy of the top-down equivalent curve, a simple method that accounts for the pile compression is proposed. It was also shown that the strain gauge measurement data from the hi-directional load test could reproduce almost the same top-down curve.

Statement of problem. In distal extension removable partial denture, the preservation of health of abutment teeth is very important, but abutment teeth are subjected to unfavorable stress under unilateral loading specially. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate the biomechanical effects of mandibular removable partial dentures with various prosthetic designs under unilateral loading, using strain gauge analysis. Material and methods. Artificial teeth of both canines were anchored bilaterally in a mandibular edentulous model made of resin. Bilateral distal extension removable partial dentures with splinted and unsplinted abutments were fabricated. Group 1: Clasp-retained mandibular removable partial denture with unsplinted abutments Group 2: Clasp-retained mandibular removable partial denture with splinted abutments by 6-unit bridge. Group 3: Bar-retained mandibular removable partial denture Strain gauges were bonded on the labial plate of the mandibular resin model, approximately 2 mm dose to the abutments. Two unilateral vertical experimental loadings (30N and 100N) were applied subsequently via miniature load cell that were placed at mandibular left first molar region. Strain measurements were performed and simultaneously monitored from a computer connected to data acquisition system. For within-group evaluations, t-test was used to compare the strain values and for between-group comparisons, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used and Tukey test was used as post hoc comparisons. Results. The strain values of group 1 and 2 were tensile under loadings. In contrast, strain values of group 3 were compressive in nature. Strain values increased as the applied load in increased from 30N to 100N (p<.05) except for right side in group 1. Under 30N loading, in left side, group 1 showed higher strain values than groups 2 and 3 in absolute quantity (p<.05). And group 2 showed higher strain values than group 1 (p<.05). In right side, group 1 and 2 showed higher strain values than group 3 in absolute quantity (p<.05). Under 100N loading in left side, group 1 showed higher strain values than groups 2 and 3 in absolute quantity (p<.05). And group 2 showed higher strain values than group 1 (p<.05). In right side, group 1 and 2 showed higher strain values than group 3 in absolute quantity (p<.05). Under 30N loading, group 2 and 3 showed higher strain values in right side than in left side. Under 100N loading, right side strain values were higher than left side ones for all groups. Conclusion. Splinting of two isolated abutments by bridge reduced the peri-abutment strain in comparison with unsplinted abutments under unilateral loading. Bar-retained removable partial denture showed the lowest strain of three groups, and compressive nature.
