This paper presents the results of analytical and numerical analyses of the effects of performing a pressuremeter test or driving a pile in clay. The geometry of the problem has been simplified by the assumptions of plane strain and axial symmetry. Pressuremeter testing or installation of driven piles has been modelled as an undrained expansion of a cylindrical cavity. Stresses, pore water pressures, and deformations are found by assuming that the clay behaves like normally consolidated modified Cam clay. Closed-form solutions are obtained which allow the determination of the principal effective stresses and the strains around the cavity. The analysis which indicates that the intermediate principal stress at critical state is not equal to the mean of the other two principal stresses, except when the clay is initially isotropically consolidated, also permits finding the limit expansion and excess pore water pressures by means of the Almansi finite strain approach. Results are compared with published data which were determined using finite element and finite difference methods.

This paper presents approximate in-depth residual stress and plastic strain profiles for laser-peened alloy 600 surface via FE analysis. In approximations, effects of the initial welding residual stress and the number of shots are quantified. Based on FE analysis results, residual stress profiles are quantified by two variables; the maximum difference in stress before and after LSP, and the depth up to which the compressive residual stress exists. Plastic strain profiles are quantified by one variable, the maximum equivalent plastic strain at the surface. The proposed profiles are validated by comparing with published LSP experimental results for welded plates. Effects of the initial welding residual stress and the number of shots on these variables are discussed. The proposed profile can be directly applied to predict the mitigation effect of LSP on PWSCC and to efficiently perform structural integrity assessment of laser peened nuclear components.
The present study focuses on the relation of the attitudes of university students to disabled by using modified disability factor scales(DFS, Siller). As for the attitude areas, it relies on the eight categories DFS provides. The 8 categories that specify each attitude area are: generalized rejection, distressed identification, inferred emotional consequences, imputed functional limitation, authoritarian virtuousness, rejection of intimacy, interaction strain, mainstreaming. This study is based on a series of questionnaire researches conducted on 322 students, over the period from October 19th to November 14th, 2001. The questionnaire carries 50 items, covering the 8 attitude areas and each item has 5 choices. The subjects' responses to each of the areas are examined in their relations to the four conditions, as they are analysed by t-test and one way ANOVA. The conclusion drawn from the research are as follows: 1. There is no significant difference between the students of the department concerned with the problem of disability, and those of the department unconcerned. But the responses are significantly different in the three areas of generalized rejection, rejection of intimacy and interaction strain(1st condition, P<.05). 2. The responses are significantly different in 6 areas except for the two, distressed identification and inferred emotional consequences, between the students who have volunteered services as helpers of the disabled and those who have no such experiences(2nd condition, P<.05). 3. the responses are significantly different between those who have volunteered long-time services and those who are far less experienced(3nd condition, P<.05). 4. There is no significant difference, whether the subjects have disabled persons around them or not. But generalized rejection, authoritarian virtuousness, rejection of intimacy, interaction strain & mainstreming show significant differences(4th condition, P<.05). 5. Generalized rejection, rejection intimacy and interaction strain show significant differences in every pair of the 4 condition. 6. Distressed identification and inferred emotional consequence show no significant difference between the two conditions in every pair of the 4 considerations.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure and compare the strain value exerted on the cervical area using different screw tightening protocols in implant-supported, screw-retained 3-unit prostheses. Materials and methods: Strain gauges were attached to four implants: two external and two internal. Thereafter, two study model were designed each type using acrylic resin. CAD-CAM was used to design hex and nonhex abutments for each group (EH, ENH, IH, and INH group) and Screw-cement-retained prostheses were also designed using a nonprecious base metal. Abutment was fixed with 10 Ncm torque, and the prosthesis was cemented. Screws were fixed with 30 Ncm torque using different three protocols. After 5 min, the strain gauge level was measured, and group analysis was performed (α=.05). Results: External group showed significantly lower strain values than internal group and the EH group showed significantly lower strain values than the ENH group (P<.05). There was no difference in strain value based on the types of screw tightening protocols in same group (P>.05). The IH group exhibited significantly higher strain values than the INH group and the IH group showed a significant difference in strain values based on the types of screw tightening protocols used (P<.05). Conclusion: There was no significant effect on the external type in the implant-supported, screw-retained prostheses. However, strain values were high in the internal type, and the types of screw tightening protocol significantly affected these implants.

There are three designs of thread form in screw type implants: V-thread, Reverse buttress thread and Square thread. The purpose of this study was to find out how thread form designs have an influence on the equivalent stress, equivalent strain, maximum shear stress and maximum shear strain and which design of thread form generates more maximum equivalent stress and strain. 3-D finite element analysis was used to evaluate the stress and strain patterns of three tread types. The results of this study were as follow. 1. Under the 200N of axial load, the value of maximum equivalent stress is smallest in square thread and there is no significant difference between that of V thread and reverse buttress thread. 2. Under the 200N of axial load, the value of maximum equivalent strain is largest in V thread and smallest in square thread. 3. Under the 200N of axial load, the value of maximum shear stress is smallest in square thread and there is no significant difference between that of V thread and reverse buttress thread. 4. Under the 200N of axial load, the value of maximum equivalent strain is largest in V thread and there is no significant difference between that of square thread and reverse buttress thread. 5. Above results show that the square thread has special advantages in stress and strain compared with other thread types, especially in shear stess which is most determinant to implant-bone interface. Considering the superior biomechanical properties of square form implant, we presume that square form implant has better clinical results than the other types of implants in the same clinical conditions.
This study evaluated the usefulness of the elasticity score and strain ratio in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant nodules in thyroid elastography. We performed a retrospective analysis based on the results of fine needle aspiration cytology. The Chi-square test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used to analyze the difference between the five degrees of elasticity score and strain ratio according to the benign and malignant thyroid nodules. ROC curve analysis was used to determine the elasticity score and the best cut-off value of the strain ratio for the prediction of malignant nodules. There was a statistically significant difference (p=0.000) between the homogeneity of the elasticity score and the difference of the strain ratio between the benign and malignant nodule groups. On the ROC curve analysis, the elasticity score and the srain ratio for predicting benign and malignant nodules were determined as AUC 0.842, 0.700, cut-off value 3, 2.49 (p=0.001). Therefore, the elasticity score and strain ratio may be useful in the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules.

This paper reports a potential problem in the electrical performance of the silicide film to silicon contacts with respect to the scaling trend in integrated circuit (IC) devices. The effects of elastic strain on the agglomeration of the coherent silicide film embedded in an infinite matrix are studied employing continuum linear elasticity and finite-difference numerical method. The interface atomic diffusion is taken to be the dominant transport mechanism where both capillarity and elastic strain are considered for the driving forces. Under plane strain condition with elastically homogeneous and anisotropic system with cubic symmetry, the dilatational misfit and the tetragonal misfit in the direction parallel to the film thickness are considered. The numerical results on the shape evolution agree with the known trend that the equilibrium aspect ratio of the film increases with the elastic strain intensity. When the elastic strain intensity is taken to be only a function of the film size, the flat film morphology with a large aspect ratio becomes increasingly unstable since the equilibrium aspect ratio decreases, as the film scales. The shape evolution results in a large decrease in contact to silicon area, and may deteriorate the electrical performances.

Tensile strength (stress) of bar splice is important in the research of mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete structures-beam, column etc.- with bar splice. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the flexural behavior - deflection of beam specimens, strain of main bars - of reinforced concrete beam with Lock Joint Coupler. To make a comparative research, reinforced concrete beam specimens with normal deformed bar and lap splice are tested and analyzed. Test results, Comparing a deflection of three types flexural specimens, a flexural specimen with Lock Joint Coupler is 40% greater than the other flexural specimens. At the center of flexural specimen, the strain of main bar(D29) with lock joint coupler is 50% less, and vice versa, at the point of 14cm far from the center of flexural specimen, the strain of main bar(D29) with lock joint coupler is 9% larger than the strain of main bar(D29) which calculated using the classical flexure theory. A discords, between a deflection behavior of the flexural specimens and a strain of the main bar, are caused by the difference of strain between the lock joint coupler and main bar, near the lock joint coupler. So, additional research is need to verify as stated above discords.

The mechanical properties of ferrite-martensited dual phases steels are affected by the microstructural factors, such as martensited volume fractions, ferrite grain size, strength ratio, connectivity, etc. Two phase alloys are technologically important. However, there is a lack of understanding as to stress-strain behavior of dual phase alloy in terms of stress-strain behavior of each component phases. The lack of the understanding stems from the complex deformation behavior of two phase alloys. The aim of this study is to rationalize stress-strain behavior of dual phase alloy in terms of the stress-strain behavior of component phase by systematically considering all the factors listed above. It was found that for a given martensite volume fraction, the calculated stress-strain curve was higher for a finer particles size than for a coarse particle sized within the range of the strains considered, and this behavior was seen for all the different volume fraction alloys considered. The calculated stress-strain curves were compared with corresponding experimental curves, and in general, good agreement was found. The maximum difference in flow stress between the calculated and the experimental results occurs at the nearly beginning of the plastic deformation.
To investigate the dynamic strain aging (DSA) behavior of Alloy 617, high-temperature tensile tests were carried out with strain rates variations of $10^{-3}/s$, $10^{-4}/s$, and $10^{-5}/s$ from $24^{\circ}C$ to $950^{\circ}C$. Five flow relationships, Hollomon, Ludwik, Swift, Ludwigson, and Voce, were applied to describe the tensile true stress-strain curves, and the DSA region was defined. In describing the tensile curves, Ludwigson's equation was superior to the other equations, and the DSA region was adequately defined by this equation as plateaus at intermediate temperatures from $200^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$. It was identified that Alloy 617 is dominated by three types of serrations, known as Types D, A+B, and C. The activation energy values for each serration type were obtained by the Arrhenius equation. By using the obtained activation energy values, the serrated yielding map and the DSA mechanism were drawn and manifested. In addition, the relationship between the tensile strength and strain rate at higher temperatures above $700^{\circ}C$ was found to be closely related to the amounts of slip lines. In the scanning electron microscope (SEM) fractographs, there was a significant difference at the low, intermediate, and high temperatures, but almost the same to the three strain rates.
