Many researches have been conducted to achieve improvement in distributed system that connects multiple computer systems via communication lines. Among others, the load balancing and file migration are considered to have significant impact on the performance of distributed system. The dynamic file migration algorithm common in distributed processing system involved complex calculations of decision function necessary for file migration and required migration of control messages for the performance of decision function. However, the performance of this decision function puts significant computational strain on computer. As one single network is shared by all computers, more computers connected to network means migration of more control messages from file migration, causing the network to trigger bottleneck in distributed processing system. Therefore, it has become imperative to carry out the research that aims to reduce the number of control messages that will be migrated. In this study, the learning automata was used for file migration which would requires only the file reference-related information to determine whether file migration has been made or determine the time and site of file migration, depending on the file conditions, thus reflecting the status of current system well and eliminating the message transfer and additional calculation overhead for file migration. Moreover, mathematical model for file migration was described in order to verify the proposed model. The results from mathematical model and simulation model suggest that the proposed model is well-suited to the distributed system.

The guided wave technique is commonly used in structural health monitoring as the guided waves can propagate far in the structures without much energy loss. The guided waves are conventionally generated by the surface-mounted piezoelectric wafer active sensor (PWAS). However, there is still lack of understanding of the wave propagation in layered structures, especially in structures made of anisotropic materials such as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. In this paper, the Rayleigh-Lamb wave strain tuning curves in a PWAS-mounted unidirectional CFRP plate are analytically derived using the normal mode expansion (NME) method. The excitation frequency spectrum is then multiplied by the tuning curves to calculate the frequency response spectrum. The corresponding time domain responses are obtained through the inverse Fourier transform. The theoretical calculations are validated through finite element analysis and an experimental study. The PWAS responses under the free, debonded and bonded CFRP conditions are investigated and compared. The results demonstrate that the amplitude and travelling time of wave packet can be used to evaluate the CFRP bonding conditions. The method can work on a baseline-free manner.
VIC (Vortex-In-Cell) method for viscous incompressible flow is presented to simulate the wake behind a modified NACA16 foil. With uniform rectangular grid, the velocity in field is calculated using streamfunction from vorticity field by solving the Poisson equation in which FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) is combined with 2nd order finite difference scheme. Here, LES(Large Eddy Simulation) with Smagorinsky model is applied for turbulence calculation. Effective viscosity is formulated using magnitude of strain tensor(or vorticity). Then the turbulent diffusion as well as viscous diffusion becomes particle strength exchange(PSE) with averaged eddy viscosity. The well-established panel method is combined to obtain the irrotational velocity and to apply the no-penetration boundary condition on the body panel. And wall diffusion is used for no-slip condition numerical results of turbulent stresses are compared with experimental results (Bourgoyne, 2003). Before comparing process, LES(Large Eddy Simulation) SGS(Subgrid scale) stress is transformed Reynolds averaged stress (Winckelmans, 2001).

A settlement prediction method based on shear wave velocity measurements and soil nonlinearity was recently developed and verified by means of centrifuge tests. However, the method was only applicable to heavily overconsolidated soil deposits under enlarged yield surfaces. In this study, the settlement evaluation method was refined to consider the stress history of the sublayer, based on an overconsolidation ratio evaluation technique, and thereby incorporate irrecoverable plastic deformation in the settlement calculation. A relationship between the small-strain shear modulus and overconsolidation ratio, which can be determined from laboratory tests, was adopted to describe the stress history of the subsurface. Based on the overconsolidation ratio determined, the value of an empirical coefficient that reflects the effect of plastic deformation over the elastic region is determined by comparing the overconsolidation ratio with the stress increment transmitted by the surface design load. The refined method that incorporate this empirical coefficient was successfully validated by means of centrifuge tests, even under normally consolidated loading conditions.

Values of process parameters in sheet metal forming can be estimated by various one-step inverse methods. One-step inverse methods based on deformation theory, however, cause some amount of error. The amount of error is generally increased as the deformation path becomes more complex. As a remedy, a new three dimensional multi-step inverse method is introduced for optimum design of blank shapes and strain distributions from desired final shapes. The approach extends a one-step inverse method to a multi-step inverse method in order to reduce the amount of error. The algorithm developed is applied to square cup drawing to confirm its validity by demonstrating reasonably accurate numerical results. Rapid calculation with this algorithm enables easy determination of an initial blank of sheet metal forming.

Wire drawing process of the high carbon steel with a high speed is usually conducted at room temperature using a number of passes or reductions through consequently located dies. In multi-stage drawing process, temperature rise in each pass affects the mechanical properties of final product such as bend, twist and tensile strength. Also, this temperature rise during the deformation is the reason that the wire in drawing process is broken by the embrittlement due to rapid strain aging effect. This paper presents the estimation of the wire temperature for the multi-stage wire drawing process. Using the proposed calculation method of wire temperature, temperature rise at deformation zone as well as temperature drop in block considering the heat transfer between the block and wire were calculated. As these calculated wire temperatures were applied to the real industrial fields, it was known that the calculated results were in a good agreement with the measured wire temperature.

Thick-walled cylinders, such as a cannon or nuclear reactor, are autofrettaged to induce advantageous residual stresses into pressure vessels and to increase operating pressure and the fatigue lifetimes. As the autofrettage level increases, the magnitude of compressive residual stress at the bore also increases. However, the Bauschinger effect reduces the compressive residual stresses as a result of prior tensile plastic strain, and decreases the beneficial autofrettage effect. The purpose of the present paper is to predict the accurate residual stress of SNCM8 high strength steel using the Kendall model which was adopted by ASME Code. The uniaxial Bauschinger effect test was performed to decide BEF, then this constant was used in calculation. There were some differences between theoretical solution and modified solution.

The drawbead is used to control the material flow into the die and increase the forming quality during the binder wrap process and the stamping process in the sheet metal forming. Drawbead restraining force (DBRF) is controlled by geometrical parameters and influenced by process parameters such as friction coefficient and blank thickness. In order to inspect the effect of process parameters, parameter studies are performed with the variation of parameters using finite element model of drawbead which is utilized reliably for the calculation of the drawbead restraining force. Drawbead analysis is carried out with 2-D plane-strain element and 3-D shell element. After the verification of the accuracy of the drawbead model with 3-D shell element, it is utilized to the prediction and the investigation of the effect of process parameters. The result of parameter studies can be utilized to the die design in the tryout stage.

The formula to calculate a variation of optical path length of single crystal by the electric field was derived by this study. The formula was applied to $Bi_{12}SiO_{20}$ single crystal. The results are as follows. In case of the applied electric field in the body diagonal direction and the passing light along the same direction, the variation of optical path length had the largest value. The symmetry of the space distribution of optical path length satisfied $E3C_2\;8C_3$, the set of elements of the symmetry of $Bi_{12}SiO_{20}$ single crystal. The property which gave the largest influence to the variation of optical path length is the strain of length by the Inverse piezoelectric effect. The second influence, is the variation of the refractive index by the electro-optic effect. The variation of optical path length by the inverse piezoelectric effect and by the electro-optic effect have a reverse sign each other.

Multiple surface crack distributed randomly along a weld toe influences strongly on the fatigue crack propagation life of welded joint. It is investigated by using statistical approaches based on series of systematic experiments. From the statistical results, initial crack numbers and its locations follow the normal distribution, and the probability of initial crack depths and lengths can be described well by tile Weibull distribution. These characteristics are used to calculate the fatigue crack propagation life, in which the mechanisms of mutual interaction and coalescence of the multiple cracks are considered as well as the Mk-factors obtained from a parametric study on the crack depths and lengths. The automatic calculation is achieved by the NESUSS, where the parameters such as the number, location and size of the cracks are all treated as random variables. The random variables are dealt through the Monte-Carlo simulation with sampling random numbers of 2,000. The simulation results show that the multiple cracks lead to much shorter crack propagation life compared with those in single crack situation. The sum of the simulation and tile fatigue crack initiation life derived by the notch strain approach agrees well with the experiments.
