Earthquake response of reinforced concrete frame structures subjected to rebar corrosion

  • This paper investigates earthquake response of reinforced concrete regular frames subjected to rebar corrosion. A typical four-story reinforced concrete frame is designed according to Turkish Earthquake Code in order to examine earthquake response. Then different levels of rebar corrosion scenarios are applied to this frame structure. The deteriorated conditions as a result of these scenarios are included loss in cross sectional area of rebar, loss of mechanical properties of rebar, loss in bond strength and variations in damage limits of concrete sections. The frame is evaluated using a nonlinear static analysis in its sound as well as deteriorated conditions. The rebar corrosion effect on the structural response is investigated by comparing the response of the frame in each scenario with respect to the sound condition of the frame. The results shows that the progressive deterioration of the frame over time cause serious reductions on the base shear and top displacement capacity and also structural ductility of the corroded frames. The propagation time, intensity, and extensity of rebar corrosion on the frame are important parameters governing the effect of rebar corrosion on earthquake response of the frame.

Seismic performance assessment of steel building frames equipped with a novel type of bending dissipative braces

  • The seismic performance of steel frames equipped with a particular type of bending dissipative braces (BDBs) having U elements, which has recently been introduced and tested by the authors, is investigated. For this purpose, two structural systems, i.e., simple and dual steel building frames, both with diagonal BDBs and different number of stories, are considered. After providing a design method of this new BDB, the detailed structural models are developed in the OpenSees platform to perform nonlinear dynamic analyses. Seismic performance factors like ductility, overstrength, response modification and deflection amplification factors are calculated using incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). In addition, to assess the damage probability of the structural models, their seismic fragilities are developed. The results show high energy dissipation capacity of both structural systems while the number of U elements needed for the bracing system of each story in the moment frames are less than those in the corresponding non-moment (simple) frames. The average response modification and deflection amplification factors for both structural schemes are obtained about 8.6 and 5.4, respectively, which are slightly larger than the corresponding recommended values of ASCE for the typical buckling-restrained braces (BRBs).

필로티형 저층 내력벽주택의 내진설계 고려사항 (Considerations for Seismic Design of Low-Rise Residential Bearing Wall Buildings with Pilotis)

  • In this study, the results of an analytical investigation on the seismic behavior of two residential 4-story bearing wall buildings with pilotis, each of which has symmetric or unsymmetric wall arrangement at their piloti level, are presented. The dynamic characteristics and lateral resistance of the piloti buildings were investigated through linear elastic and nonlinear static analyses. According to the results, the analytical natural period of vibration of the piloti buildings were significantly shorter than the fundamental period calculated in accordance with KBC 2016. In the initial elastic behavior, the walls resisting in-plane shear contributed to the lateral stiffness and strength, while the contribution of columns resisting flexural moments in double curvature was limited. However, after the shear cracking and yielding of the walls occurred, the columns significantly contributed to the residual strength and ductility. Based on those investigations, design recommendations of low-rise bearing wall buildings with piloti configuration are given.

Seismic performance and design method of PRC coupling beam-hybrid coupled shear wall system

  • The seismic behavior of PRC coupling beam-hybrid coupled shear wall system is analyzed by using the finite element software ABAQUS. The stress distribution of steel plate, reinforcing bar in coupling beam, reinforcing bar in slab and concrete is investigated. Meanwhile, the plastic hinges developing law of this hybrid coupled shear wall system is also studied. Further, the effect of coupling ratio, section dimensions of coupling beam, aspect ratio of single shear wall, total height of structure and the role of slab on the seismic behavior of the new structural system. A fitting formula of plate characteristic values for PRC coupling beams based on different displacement requirements is proposed through the experimental date regression analysis of PRC coupling beams at home and abroad. The seismic behavior control method for PRC coupling beam-hybrid coupled shear wall system is proposed based on the continuous connection method and through controlling the coupling ratio, the roof displacement, story drift angle of hybrid coupled shear wall system, displacement ductility of coupling beam.

2017 포항지진에 의한 필로티형 내력벽건물의 구조손상 분석 (Investigation of Structural Damage in Bearing Wall Buildings with Pilotis by 2017 Pohang Earthquake)

  • In 2017 Pohang Earthquake, a number of residential buildings with pilotis at their first level were severely damaged. In this study, the results of an analytical investigation on the seismic performance and structural damage of two bearing wall buildings with pilotis are presented. The vibration mode and lateral force-resisting mechanism of the buildings with vertical and plan irregularity were investigated through elastic analysis. Then, based on the investigations, methods of nonlinear modeling for walls and columns at the piloti level were proposed. By performing nonlinear static and dynamic analyses, structural damages of the walls and columns at the piloti level under 2017 Pohang Earthquake were predicted. The results show that the area and arrangement of walls in the piloti level significantly affected the seismic safety of the buildings. Initially, the lateral resistance of the piloti story was dominated mainly by the walls resisting in-plane shear. After shear cracking and yielding of the walls, the columns showing double-curvature flexural behavior contributed significantly to the residual strength and ductility.

Seismic performance evaluation of an external steel frame retrofit system

  • In this study a steel moment frame system to be installed on the exterior surface of an existing structure is proposed as a seismic retrofit device. The seismic performance of the retrofit system was investigated by installing it on the exterior of a single story single bay reinforced concrete frame and testing it under cyclic loading. The cyclic loading test results indicated that the steel frame significantly enhanced the strength and ductility of the bare structure. Finite element analysis was carried out to validate the test results, and it was observed that there was good agreement between the two results. An analytical model was developed in order to apply the retrofit system to an example structure subjected to seven mainshock-aftershock sequential earthquake records. It was observed that the model structure was severely damaged due to the mainshock earthquakes, and the seismic response of the model structure increased significantly due to the subsequent aftershock earthquakes. The seismic retrofit of the model structure using the proposed steel frame turned out to be effective in decreasing the seismic response below the given limit state.

  • 본 연구에서는 고등해석과 유전자 알고리즘을 이용한 강뼈대 구조물의 직접설계시스템의 최적화를 수행하였다. 본 연구에서 사용한 고등해석은 기하학적 비선형과 재료적 비선형을 동시에 고려한다. 직접설계 시스템의 최적화를 위해 유전자 알고리즘을 사용하였다. 목적함수로 구조물의 중량을 사용하였으며, 제약조건식은 구조시스템의 하중-저항능력, 처짐, 층간 수평변위 및 연성요구 조건을 고려하였다. 제안된 방법에 의해 나타난 결과를 다른 방법에 의한 것들과 비교해서 그 효율성을 증명하였다.

  • 본 연구에서는 2차 비탄성해석과 단면점증법을 이용한 평면 강골조 구조물의 최적설계 방법을 제시하였다. 2차 비탄성해석은 구조시스템과 그에 속한 부재들의 기하학적 비선형과 재료적 비선형을 고려하기 때문에 2차 비탄성해석에 바탕을 둔 설계법에서는 해석 후 개별부재의 강도검토가 필요 없다. 본 논문에서 제안한 단면점증법을 최적화 기법으로 사용하였으며 목적함수로 구조물의 중량을 사용하였다. 제약조건식은 구조시스템의 하중-저항능력, 처짐 및 층간 수평변위 등을 고려하였으며 제안된 방법에 의한 설계결과를 다른 방법에 의한 것들과 비교하여 그 효율성을 증명하였다.

중력하중 설계된 1:5 축소 3층 철근콘크리트 골조의 지진모의실험 (Earthquake Simulation Tests of A 1:5 Scale Gravity Load Designed 3-Story Reinforced Concrete Frame)

  • 이 연구의목적은 여러 수준의 지진에 대한 비내진 상세를 가진 저층 모멘트 저항 골조의 실제 반응을 관찰하기 위한 것이다. 우선 모델에 대한 축소율은 사용된 진동대의 용량을 고려하여 1 : 5 로 결정하였으며 상사성의 법칙에 따라 모델을 제작하였다. 그 다음에 이 모델에 대해 Taft N21E 지진가속도 기록의 최대 지진가속도를 0.12g. 0.2g, 0.4g로 조정하여 진동대를 이용한 지진모의실험을 수행하였다. 각 층별 횡방향 가속도와 변위, 그리고 구조물의 취약부위에서 국부변형이 측정되었다. 밑면 전단력은 손수 만든 로드셀을 이용하여 측정하엿다. 각 지진모의실험 전과 후에는 고유주기와 감쇠비의 변화를 살펴보기 위해 자유진동실험을 수행하였다. 전체거동과 국부거동에 대한 실험결과를 분석한 결과, 이 모델은 우리나라의 현행 내진 설계 기준에서의 설계지진 즉, 0.12g의 최대 지진가속에 대해서는 선형탄성으로 거동하였다. 최대 밑면 전단력은 1.8tf 로 설계 밑면 전단력의 약 4.7배로나타났다.이 실험모델은 높은 수준의 지진모의실험에서도 양호한 성능을 나타내었다. 높은 수준의지진에 대한 저항의 주요요소는 1)높은 초과강도, 2)기본주기의 증가, 그리고 3)비탄성 변형에 의한 얼마간의 에너지소산이다. 이 실험에서 모델의 층간변위는 대략 허용한계 내에 있었다.

유효횡구속압력 감소계수를 사용한 RC 기둥의 횡보강근량 평가 (The Volumetric Ratio of Transverse Reinforcement of R/C Columns Considering Effective Lateral Confining Reduction Factor)

  • 본 연구는 고축력과 반복횡력을 받는 초고강도 RC 띠철근 기둥의 실험적 연구를 수행하였다. 콘크리트 압축강도 100 MPa 초고강도 RC 띠철근 기둥의 횡보강근의 양을 제안하는 것이다. 철근콘크리트 구조물의 실제 보를 스터브로 이상화한 1/2개 층의 기둥 실험체를 계획하여 1/3 크기의 19개 실험체를 제작하였다. 주요 변수는 축력비, 횡보강근의 형상 및 체적비로 하였다. 실험 결과, 띠철근 기둥의 강도와 연성은 횡보강근의 형상과 체적비의 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났으나, 무엇보다 축력비에 가장 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 나타나 초고강도 콘크리트 기둥의 횡보강근량 설계를 위해서는 축력비에 따른 적절한 횡보강근의 형상으로 보다 합리적인 설계가 이루어져야 할 것으로 판단된다. 또한, 초고강도 철근콘크리트 기둥의 충분한 연성확보를 위하여 최소한의 변위연성능력 4이상을 확보할 수 있도록 설계식을 제안하였다. 따라서 이는 축력비와 함께 횡보강근의 형상, 간격 및 주근의 개수 등을 고려한 유효횡구속감소계수 (${\lambda}^c$)를 적용한 것이므로 횡보강근량 산정시 보다 합리적일 것으로 판단된다.
