  • This work presents a direct integration scheme, based on a fourth order finite difference approach, for elastodynamics. The proposed scheme was chosen as an alternative for attenuating the errors due to the use of the central difference method, mainly when the time-step length approaches the critical time-step. In addition to eliminating the spurious numerical oscillations, the fourth order finite difference scheme keeps the advantages of the central difference method: reduced computer storage and no requirement of factorisation of the effective stiffness matrix in the step-by-step solution. A study concerning the stability of the fourth order finite difference scheme is presented. The Finite Element Method and the Boundary Element Method are employed to solve elastodynamic problems. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed scheme, two examples are presented and discussed at the end of this work.

  • The rapid development of IT, many conventional passive jobs have been automated. This automation increases the leisure time of many people and various services are being developed for them. In addition, with the advent of smart devices that are compact and portable, it is possible to use various internet services without any time and place discretion. Various studies based on virtualization are under way to efficiently store and process large data generated by many devices and services. Desktop Storage Virtualization (DSV), which integrates and provides users with on-premise-based distributed desktop resources during these studies, uses virtualization to consolidate unused resources within distributed, legacy desktops. This DSV is very important for providing high reliability to users. In addition, research on hierarchical structure and resource integration for efficient data distribution storage processing in a distributed desktop-based resource integration environment is underway. However, there is a lack of research on efficient operation in case of server failure in on-premise resource integration environment. In this paper, we propose Non-disruptive Server Management (NSM) which can actively cope with the failure of desktop server in distributed desktop storage environment based on on-premise. NSM is easy to add and remove desktops in a desktop-based integrated environment. In addition, an alternative server is actively performed in response to a failure occurrence.

  • This paper presents a method of seismic analysis for a 2-D fluid-structure-soil interaction systems. With this method, the fluid can be modeled by spurious free 4-node displacement-based fluid elements which use rotational penalty and mass projection technique in conjunction with the one point reduced integration scheme to remove the spurious zero energy modes. The structure and the near-field soil are discretized by the standard 2-D finite elements, while the unbounded far-field soil is represented by the dynamic infinite elements in the frequency domain. Since this method directly models the fluid-structure-soil interaction systems, it can be applied to the dynamic analysis of a 2-D liquid storage structure with complex geometry. Finally, results of seismic analyses are presented for a spent fuel storage tank embedded in a layered half-space and a massive concrete dam on a layered half-space.

  • Finding publications that propose alternative methods to animal experiments is an important but time-consuming task since researchers need to perform various queries to literature databases and screen many articles to assess two important aspects: the relevance of the article to the research question, and whether the article's proposed approach qualifies to being an alternative method. We are currently developing a Web application to support finding alternative methods to animal experiments. The current (under development) version of the application utilizes external tools and resources for document processing, and relies on the PubAnnotation ecosystem for annotation querying, annotation storage, dictionary-based tagging of cell lines, and annotation visualization. Currently, our two PubAnnotation repositories for discourse elements contain annotations for more than 110k PubMed documents. Further, we created an annotator for cell lines that contain more than 196k terms from Cellosaurus. Finally, we are experimenting with TextAE for annotation visualization and for user feedback.

  • In case of inspection on aluminum castings, traditional RT (Radiographic Testing) method have been utilized for its advantages in interpretation, cost and perpetual storage. But it has disadvantages like time consumption in film processing, low efficiency in storage and environmental pollution. In this thesis, a DRS (Digital Radiography System) utilizing X-Ray TDI Camera (Time Delay and Integration Camera) is developed. Inspections on aluminum castings are performed using the developed Digital Radiography System, DRS and reviewed if newly developed system can substitute for the traditional method.

  • The VBC(Voltage Bus Conditioner) is a bidirectional DC-DC converter with the energy storage for damping the instability and any transients of bus voltage in the DC DPS(Distributed Power System). This paper presents the PI(Proportional Integration) controller for the VBC. The PI controller is not only damping the bus transient, but also keeping the storage voltage level. Matlab Simulink simulation and experimental results are presented by validity of the proposed control technique.

  • In this study, sliding response analysis of free standing structure such as multi-purpose nuclear spent fuel storage cask is peformed. The governing factors of sliding response are aspect ratio of structure and ground acceleration. The vertical acceleration component is very important factor in the sliding response of the structure. Based on the mathematical model, computer program is developed using direct forward integration method to predict the sliding response. Using the program, several parametric studies were made for sinusodial ground motion and for El Centre 1940 earthquake and Mexico 1973 earthquake. From the results, it is known that the frequency content and duration of strong motion affect the sliding of the structure.

  • SiOB is an essential part of slim optical pickup, where the silicon mirror, LD stand, silicon PD are integrated and LD is flip chip bonded. SiOB is fabricated with bulk micromachining. Especially the fabrication of silicon wafer with stepped concave areas has many extraordinary difficulties. As a matter of fact, experiences and knowledges are rare in the fabrication of the highly stepped silicon wafer. The difficulties occurring in the integration of PD and SiOB, and highly stepped patterning, and silicon mirror roughness and how-to-solve will be discussed.

  • The machine locking system is an important device for the safety of persons using the machine. In this study, a locking system using electromagnetic fields is proposed to decrease the defects and the cost for repairing and maintenance of the existing locking system using structural mechanism. We analyze the electromagnetic locking system and calculate the generated force considering direction by the finite element method. Also, we set up two design domains for the topology optimization; first domain is optimized to reduce the volume and the other is optimized to maximize the generated force keeping the volume, especially. The optimal design is obtained by integration of the two optimized results. An improved design is obtained by the optimal topology and it is confirmed by comparison with the initial locking system.
