  • This paper deals with a production line which consists of two production stages that are separated by a finite storage buffer. The inventory level in the storage buffer controls the production rate of the preceding stage. That is, the production rate becomes high (low) when the buffer inventory is low (high). We analyze the system characteristics utilizing the Markov process theory and then find an optimal control policy which maximizes a given system profit function. Also, a sensitivity analysis is made to examine the effects of various system parameters on the system performances.

  • In this paper, we present the effect of buffer storage capacity un two-stage transfer lines in such a way as to introduce the production rate to be reduced which is called a Slowed Down(SD) state. A Markov model is used to establish a formulation for the analysis of the delays associated with the stage to be starved or blocked. Operating policies are proposed by analyzing the effect of the decision variables such as the production rates, the failure rates, buffer capacities and SD rates through computer simulation experiments.

  • Effects of addition of Chinese chives into frozen noodle on retrogradation of the cooked frozen noodle were examined by enzymatic evaluation during the storage 3 days at $4^{\circ}C$. The retrogradation rate during storage was significantly reduced by addition Chinese chives. Thus we hypothesized that retarogardation and textural changes of frozen noodle might be linked to thermostable amylase in Chinese chives. The amylase isolated from Chinese chives was affected by temperature and pH of buffer used. The enzyme was mainly extracted 20 mM potassium phosphate buffer(pH 7.0). The enzyme was extremly stable at wide temerature and pH. Amylase activity was maximal at $50^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.5. The enzyme was not inactivated by heat treatment at $70^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. We suggest the enzyme was stable at high temperature. To investigate the effect of different storage packge on texture properties, color, sensory evaluation, parent-packged and unparent packaged frozen noodle was compared with control. As the storage passed, the frozen noodle packaged with parent showed a rapid decrease in the color. The hardness was gradually decreased during storage. It was found that unparent packged must be nessasry in the Chinese chives frozen noodle. In changes of sensory properties by traind panel, Chinese chives frozen noodle with 2% blanched Chinese chives got the highest score in overall acceptability, therefore we tried acceptance test by consumers with 2% blanched frozen Chinese chives noodle.

  • As the dependency to network system and demands of efficient storage systems rapidly grows in every networking filed, the current trends initiated by explosive networked data grow due to the wide-spread of internet multimedia data and internet requires a paradigm shift from computing-centric to data-centric in storagesystems. Furthermore, the new environment of file systems such as NAS(Network Attached Storage) and SAN(Storage Area Network) is adopted to the existing storage paradigm for Providing high availability and efficient data access. We describe the design issues and system components of SANiqueTM, which is the cluster file system based on SAN environment. SANiqueTM has the capability of transferring the user data from the network-attached SAN disk to client applications directly We, especially, present the protocol and functionality of the global buffer manager in our cluster file system.

  • In this paper, we propose a dynamic load distribution technique at the operating system level in mobile storage systems with a heterogeneous storage pair of a small form-factor and disk and a flash memory, which aims at saving energy consumption as well as enhancing I/O performance. Our proposed technique takes a combinatory approach of file placement and buffer cache management techniques to find how the load can be distributed in an energy and performance-aware way for a heterogeneous mobile storage air of a hard disk and a flash memory. We demonstrate that the proposed technique provides better experimental results with heterogeneous mobile storage devices compared with the existing techniques through extensive simulations.

  • The advent of large-scale web services has resulted in gradual increase in the amount of data used in those services. These big data are managed efficiently by DBMS such as MySQL and MariaDB, which use InnoDB engine as their storage engine, since InnoDB guarantees ACID and is suitable for handling large-scale data. To improve I/O performance, InnoDB caches data and index of its database through a buffer pool. It also supports multiple buffer pools to mitigate lock contentions. However, the multiple buffer pool scheme leads to the additional data consistency overhead. In this paper, we analyze the overhead of the multiple buffer pool scheme. In our experimental results, although multiple buffer pool scheme mitigates the lock contention by up to 46.3%, throughput of DMBS is significantly degraded by up to 50.6% due to increased disk I/O and fsync calls.

  • Video server which stores video streams should serve more users with the requested streams rapidly, satisfying their time constraints. For this objective, the storage system of the video server needs large disk bandwidth and buffer capacity. But, because given disk bandwidth and buffer capacity are limited, technologies that utilize effectively the given disk bandwidth and buffer capacity without waste might be needed. In this paper, we propose the policies that not only reduce the startup latency but also, support more users by utilizing the disk bandwidth and buffer efficiently, which also considering time constraint characteristics of video stream. In order to reduce the startup latency of the service requests, it inducts the effect of random access of disk head by moving asynchronously disk heads in multiple disk environments. Also, there are two technologies to support more users. First, the proposed policy reduces the seek latency by moving the disk head sequentially so that it saves the disk bandwidth. Second, it determines the segment size through considering both given buffer capacity and given disk bandwidth by heuristic approach in order to overcome the constraints of the number of streams supported due to limitation of buffer capacity. The segment size makes it utilize given buffer optimally with given disk bandwidth. The correctness of the proposed policies is not only analyzed theoretically but also evaluated through simulations.

  • On large-scale data analysis platforms deployed on cloud infrastructures over the Internet, the instability of the data transfer time and the dynamics of the processing rate require a more sophisticated data distribution scheme which maximizes parallel efficiency by achieving the balanced load among participated computing elements and by eliminating the idle time of each computing element. In particular, under the constraints that have the real-time and limited data buffer (in-memory storage) are given, it needs more controllable mechanism to prevent both the overflow and the underflow of the finite buffer. In this paper, we propose an auto regulated data provisioning model based on receiver-driven data pull model. On this model, we provide a synchronized data replenishment mechanism that implicitly avoids the data buffer overflow as well as explicitly regulates the data buffer underflow by adequately adjusting the buffer resilience. To estimate the optimal size of buffer resilience, we exploits an adaptive buffer resilience control scheme that minimizes both data buffer space and idle time of the processing elements based on directly measured sample path analysis. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides allowable approximation compared to the numerical results. Also, it is suitably efficient to apply for such a dynamic environment that cannot postulate the stochastic characteristic for the data transfer time, the data processing rate, or even an environment where the fluctuation of the both is presented.

  • Gel electrophoresis of DNA is a well known technique in molecular biology. This technique is simple, rapid to perform, and capable of adequately separating fragments of DNA. A number of mixtures of DNA fragments ("DNA size markers") are frequently employed in a purpose of extrapolating the sizes or the amount of DNA molecules during gel electrophoresis. DNA size markers are constructed by digesting plasmid DNA, bacteriophage DNA, or recombinant DNA molecules with one or more restriction enzymes. However, liquid suspension containing DNA size marker needs to be kept at a low temperature during storage and shipping. In an attempt to maintain the DNA samples at room temperature for extended period of time, lyophilization of DNA with addition of nuclease inhibitor was studied. Gel loading buffer was also added to the lyophilized DNA to provide additional convenience such that DNA size marker was the "ready-to-use" followed by simply reconstituting with distilled water.

  • Using SCM in storage systems introduce new potentials for improving I/O performance and reliability. In this paper, we study the use of SCM as a buffer cache that guarantees transactional unit writes. Our proposed method can improve storage system reliability and performance at the same time and can recover the storage system immediately upon a system crash. The Proposed method is based on the LINUX JBD(Journaling Block Device), thus reliability is equivalent to JBD. In our experiments, the file system that adopts our method shows better I/O performance even while guaranteeing high reliability and shows fast file system recovery time (about 0.2 seconds).
