  • Several techniques have been developed in the last years for energy conversion and aeronautic propulsion plants monitoring and diagnostics, to ensure non-stop availability and safety, mainly based on machine learning and pattern recognition methods, which need large databases of measures. This paper aims to describe a simulation based monitoring and diagnostic method to overcome the lack of data. An application on a gas turbine powered frigate is shown. A MATLAB-SIMULINK(R) model of the frigate propulsion system has been used to generate a database of different faulty conditions of the plant. A monitoring and diagnostic system, based on Mahalanobis distance and artificial neural networks have been developed. Experimental data measured during the sea trials have been used for model calibration and validation. Test runs of the procedure have been carried out in a number of simulated degradation cases: in all the considered cases, malfunctions have been successfully detected by the developed model.

  • With the globalization of economy, there is keen competition among rountries to be a logistics hub and companies are striving to be first in establishing logistics system centering on advantageous sites, especially airport and seaports, to perform supply, production and distribution. Korea competing with Northeast Asia countries is also working out strategies in order to make Korea peninsula a logistics center of Northeast Asia taking advantage of its geographical strength. Gwangyang port has designated as Free Economic Zone together with Pusan and Jinhae, Incheon from October 24th, 2003. However, the introduction of Free Economic Zone in Korea lagged behind other major countries and it has a lot of operational problems. Approximately 600 areas worldwide are designated and operated as a Free Economic Zone and Gwangyang port and its surrounding area has several points to be settled as one of FEZ. First one is its limited functions and related laws. Next is imperfection on development, investment and management system of the hinterland. Lark of promotion activities could be one of the problems. This paper analyzes the above problems and presents various measures to activate Gwangyang Port and Gwangyang Free Economic Zone as follows Benchmarking to promote Gwangyang Free Economic Zone as follows Benchmarking other countries' system, governmental support, introduction & logistics functions, early development of the hinterland, supply of effective one-stop service, investment attraction into the area and diversified promotion & marketing activities.

  • This paper present a method of meter-out flow control for overload protection valve in full-scale airframe test. Emergency stop, which results in dump state, can be happened during full-scale airframe test by several causes. Because servo valve can't control hydraulics actuator in the dump state, pressure in cylinder chamber may rise abruptly and overload can be acted to the test article. In this paper, the procedure and technology of orifice setting are investigated to protect the test article from unexpected loads by dump. The test results show that the presented methods decrease peak loads and improve unloading characteristics of hydraulic actuators in the dump state.

  • Previous studies have shown that Korean students have difficulty identifying some English consonants which are not in the Korean sound inventory. The aim of this study was to examine the accuracy rate of English consonants correctly identified by 130 college students in order to find out which English consonants were difficult for the students to perceive. The subject's task was to identify one of the minimal pairs played in a quiet laboratory classroom. 100 minimal pairs consisted of syllables with various onsets or codas: stops, fricatives, affricates, liquids and nasals. Results were as follows: First, the average score of the English major group was significantly higher than that of the non-English major group. Second, there was a similar distribution in the rank order of minimal pairs sorted by the accuracy rate between the two groups. Third, the accuracy rate systematically decreased as each score range decreased. Fourth, the students showed higher accuracy in the perception of liquids than that of the stop-fricative contrast. Fifth, the accuracy score in onset position was higher than in coda position. Finally, the students still had problem telling voiced consonants from voiceless ones, especially in coda position. It would be desirable to extend the present research to middle or high school students to fundamentally resolve those listening problems.

  • Non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), and to a lesser extent, the error-free pathway known as homology-directed repair (HDR) are cellular mechanisms for recovery from double-strand DNA breaks (DSB) induced by RNA-guided programmable nuclease CRISPR/Cas. Since NHEJ is equivalent to using a duck tape to stick two pieces of metals together, the outcome of this repair mechanism is prone to error. Any out-of-frame mutations or premature stop codons resulting from NHEJ repair mechanism are extremely handy for loss-of-function studies. Substitution of a mutation on the genome with the correct exogenous repair DNA requires coordination via an error-free HDR, for targeted transgenesis. However, several practical limitations exist in harnessing the potential of HDR to replace a faulty mutation for therapeutic purposes in all cell types and more so in somatic cells. In germ cells after the DSB, copying occurs from the homologous chromosome, which increases the chances of incorporation of exogenous DNA with some degree of homology into the genome compared with somatic cells where copying from the identical sister chromatid is always preferred. This review summarizes several strategies that have been implemented to increase the frequency of HDR with a focus on somatic cells. It also highlights the limitations of this technology in gene therapy and suggests specific solutions to circumvent those barriers.

  • Structural optimization has been carried out in continuous or discrete design space. Methods for continuous design have been well developed though they are finding the local optima. On the contrary, the existing methods for discrete design are extremely expensive in computational cost or not robust. In this research, an algorithm using tabu search is developed fur the discrete structural designs. The tabu list and the neighbor function of the Tabu concepts are introduced to the algorithm. It defines the number of steps, the maximum number for random searches and the stop criteria. A tabu search is known as the heuristic approach while genetic algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm are attributed to the stochastic approach. It is shown that an algorithm using the tabu search with random moves has an advantage of discrete design. Furthermore, the suggested method finds the reliable optimum for the discrete design problems. The existing tabu search methods are reviewed. Subsequently, the suggested method is explained. The mathematical problems and structural design problems are investigated to show the validity of the proposed method. The results of the structural designs are compared with those from a genetic algorithm and an orthogonal array design.

  • Load/Unload(L/UL) technology includes the benefits, that is, increased areal density, reduced power consumption and improved shock resistance contrary to contact start stop(CSS). It has been widely used in portable hard disk drive and will become the key technology for developing the small form factor hard disk drive. The main objectives of L/UL are no slider disk contact or no media damage. For realizing those, we must consider many design parameters in L/UL systems. In this paper, we focus on the effect of the ramp profile. We can find out the lateral velocities in L/UL process through experiments and simulations for force of voice coil motor and friction force on ramp. And then, we will gain the optimal design of ramp slope to maintain the minimum clearance of suspension dimple and slider with FE model. In special, after finding the point at which air bearing breaks and designing the ramp, we will identify the results for improving unload performance.

  • Tooth impaction represents the stop of eruption by clinical and radiographical disturbance in eruption path or the dislocation of tooth germ. The most common factor in tooth eruption disorders are spacial deficiency with other causes reported to be odontogenic tumors, periodontal ligament injury, etc. Impaction of the mandibular second molar is relatively rare and reported in about 3 out of 1,000 people. Because the second molars tend to erupt in a mesial direction, this situation can lead to serious problems if untreated, including dental caries, periodontal disease and root resorption of the first molar. Treatment of this problem includes, surgical repositioning and orthodontic forced eruption. Because each procedure have the definite advantages and disadvantages, and influenced by circumferential environment, these have limits for successfu1 recovery as independent treatment. In a case at St. Mary's Hospital, we performed successful correction of a horizontal impacted mandibular second molar using a miniplate skeletal anchorage system. We introduce this treatment as a valid method for an impacted second molar and consider a oromaxillofacial surgeon's role in tooth movement treatment.

  • The metering systems in LPG vaporizers have been frequently exposed to severe conditions and resulted in many problems such as gauge malfunctioning and rupturing if the check-floaters fail to stop liquid outflow when the heat supply for the vaporization of LPG is interrupted. Therefore, to analysis the vaporizer system we carried out the vaporizer performance test and float bulb test by newly devised test equipments. Consequently, we determined the specific gravity of the float bulb and reasonable operating temperature ranges for the LPG and heating waters.

  • High temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) offer a clean, pollution-free technology to electrochemically generate electricity at high efficiencies. Solid oxide fuel cells in several different designs have been investigated; these include planar and tubular geometries. The tubular type cell is widely researched due to it have advantages about thermal expansion and sealing issues. Unfortunately, lab scale tubular cell for testing has thermal expansion and sealing problems. The previous Jig for lab scale tubular cell testing has many sealing problems. When we feed fuel gas to jig inlet, ceramic glue sealant has amount of gas expansion pressure, because temperature of feeding gas changes ambient temperature to high temperature ($700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$). Furthermore, when we carry out long time test, something like degradation test, crack of ceramic glue sealant due to weakness of mechanical properties can make stop working the test. Additionally, we reduce setting process for assembling, because micanite is not required drying or debinding process.
