  • Three-story Stone pagodas in Gameunsa Temple site, one of the early staged stone pagodas, has been known as a standard of Silla stone pagodas. A stone pagoda is not only a stone art work and but also a stone architecture. In understanding the stone pagoda it is very important to be approached with technological side in which we can investigate the stone pagoda deeply and as well as to have been approached with art historical view. Also it needs that we should see the stone pagoda in view of structural safety. We can get many high technique from our ancestors who made Gameunsajiseoktap. 1. To reduce any deformation such as relaxation and sinking of members which is caused by a heavy load the members such as the lower tier of the base is made up of the foundation stone and side stone in each, comprising one stone. 2. A special construction method for connection between wall stone and column stone in stereobates was invented. It is to make column stone projected partially and wall stone be caved in that two members should be jointed well. This unique method is not used any longer after the three-story Stone pagodas in Gameunsa Temple Site. 3. In each side upper and lower member are not engaged as the size of roof stones and support stones of roof stones are different. It can be done for a distribution of perpendicular load and a prevention for relaxation of members. 4. It makes sure that to make upper ends of support stones 10mm lower was to be avoid upper loads to it judging from survey in disassemblying east pagoda. It proves that ancestors who made this stone pagoda had a technique to understand the structural matters to make small members as big as possible, not to engage in joint, to avoid in ends of members from upper load.

  • A series of shaking table tests were conducted to estimate the seismic performance of soft ground deposits improved by stone column. The amplification of acceleration, shear strain, and shear wave velocity were evaluated to compare the seismic response of unimproved ground deposits with that of improved ground deposits. From the test results, it was shown that the stone column can prevent large shear deformation in ground deposits. However, it was also found that the acceleration of improved ground deposits may be amplified more than that of unimproved ground deposits when it was subjected to short periodic seismic wave. The results suggest that it is necessary to perform the ground response analysis with model experiments for both unimproved and improved ground deposits to evaluate the effect of stone column on the seismic performance of improved ground deposits.

  • This paper presents the results of a research performed to investigate the finite element modeling approach for GESC (Geogrid-Encased Stone Column) method in soft ground within the framework of stress-pore pressure coupled analysis. GESC reinforcement mechanism and construction method was first examined and model verification of stone column on the results of FE analysis was identified. The results indicate that the 3D FE analysis and membrane elements play the most important role in the soft groung using GESC. Based on the results, a modeling method was suggested for stress-pore pressure coupled finite element modelling of GESC in soft ground.

  • This paper presents the results of numerical investigation on support mechanism of geogrid-encased stone columns for use in soft ground. A number of cases were analyzed using a axial- and 3D stress-pore pressure coupled model that can effectively model construction sequence and drainage as well as reinforcing effects of geogrid-encased stone columns. The results indicated that the geogrid encasement tends to significantly improve the load carrying of a stone column. Also revealed was that such a confinement effect depends on encasement length and stiffness of geogrid. It is also shown that there exist critical encasement length and stiffness of geogrid for a given condition.

  • An integrity testing for stone columns was attempted using crosshole S-wave logging. The method is conceptionally quite similar to the crosshole sonic logging (CSL) for drilled piers. The critical difference in the logging is the use of S-wave rather than P-wave, which is used in CSL, because swave is the only wave sensing the stiffness of slower unbounded materials than water. An electro-mechanical source, which can generate reversed Swave signals, was utilized in the logging. The stone column was delineated using the S-wave travel times across the stone column, the S-wave velocity profile of the crushed stone($V_{cs}$-profile) and that of surrounding soil($V_s$-profile). In the calculation of $V_{cs}$-profile of the crushed stone, its friction angle and Ko (coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest) are recommended to be used. The calculation of the column diameter is not much affected by the values of friction angle and Ko.

  • Column is usually floating on the stone base directly with or without positioning tenon in traditional Chinese timber structure. Vertical load originated by the heavy upper structure would induce large friction force and compression force between interfaces of column foot and stone base. This study focused on the mechanical behaviors of column foot joint with consideration of the influence of vertical load. Mechanism of column rocking and stress state of column foot has been explored by theoretical analysis. A nonlinear finite element model of column foot joint has been built and verified using the full-scale test. The verified model is then used to investigate the mechanical behaviors of the joint subjected to cyclic loading with different static vertical loads. Column rocking mechanism and stress distributions of column foot were studied in detail, showing good agreement with the theoretical analysis. Mechanical behaviors of column foot joint and the effects of the vertical load on the seismic behavior of column foot were studied. Result showed that compression stress, restoring moment and stiffness increased with the increase of vertical load. An appropriate vertical load originated by the heavy upper structure would produce certain restoring moment and reset the rocking columns, ensuring the stability of the whole frame.

  • This paper presents the results of investigation on the influencing factors for GESC(Geogrid-Encased Stone Column) method in soft ground. A parametric study was then conducted on the influencing factors such as replacement ratio, geogrid stiffness and thickness of soft ground using stress-porepressure coupled analysis. The results indicate that the relationship between these parameters and settlement ratio, and the relationship between these parameters and stress concentration factor can be identified.

  • This study presents a modeling approach for geogrid-encased stone column(GESC) method which is widely used in Europe as an alternative to conventional pile foundations. Several benefits of using the stone column method include sound performance, low cost, expediency of construction, and liquefaction resistance, among others. Recently, geosynthetic-encased stone column approach has been developed to improve load carrying capacity through increasing confinement effect. The aim of this research is to establish a systematic approach for modeling of GESC and to form a database for the fundamentals of GESC. This paper presents details of 3D modeling of GESC together with the general behavior of GESC.

  • This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation on construction method of geogrid encased stone column (GESC). In order to analyze effects of load carrying capacity and geogrid deformation characteristics of GESC, a series of medium scale unconfined compression tests with different overlay methods and reduced model tests were performed. The test results show that the method of overlap provides a simple and effective method of encasement construction. It is also found that geogrid encasement construction using method of overlap has important factor which can be applied to field tests. The geogrid encasement method related to effect of reinforcement is presented by laboratory test results.

  • This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation into a study on undrained characteristics of a geogrid-encased stone column (GESC) installed in soft clay under cyclic load. In order to analyze behavior of settlement, pore water pressure, stress concentration ratio and strain of the GESC compared to a stone column, a series of reduced-scale laboratory tests were performed. The model tests show that GESC provides a simple and effective method of deformation resistance and settlement restraint when a short-term cyclic load is applied. The maximum strain of geogrid occurred at 1.2D and 1.5D from the top of the column. This paper highlights the importance of considering overlay effect and replacement ratio on cyclic load supporting GESC.
