The seated stone Buddha(Bon5190) of National Museum of Korea initially consisted of some 90 fragments, making it difficult to guess its overall appearance. Under a restoration work which lasted four months, the fragments were joined together, giving shape to a seated Stone Buddha in Bhumisparsa(earth touching) mudra and an associated figure of Bodhisattva missing the face. The statue was made from a single stone block by digging out the center. Traces of lacquer coating and a gilded layer above the lacquer coat were found in various parts. Polarizing microscopy and XRD analysis revealed that the stone was zeolite, a mineral formed through diagenesis of volcanic glassy ashes from trachytic tuff (Nuldaeri) and dacitic tuff (Guryongpo). In Korea, zeolite deposit found mostly in Gyeongsangbuk-do, in places like Yeonil, Guryongpo, Gampo and Ulsan. The restored statue of seated Buddha proved very similar in appearance to the seated stone Buddha of Deoksa Temple in Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do (housed in Yeongsanjeon Hall). The scroll inside the statue, containing information about the background and circumstances of creation of this Buddhist sculpture, indicates that the monk Seung-ho took part in it as the head sculptor-monk.
This study focus on the suggestion of standard legend, the process system on making method of deterioration map, the development of crack index (CI), and the evaluation techniques of surface and 3D deterioration rate for stone cultural heritage. The standard legends of deterioration forms were made using a common graphic program after crack, blistering, scaling, break-out, granular disintegration, and perforation were subdivided. The deterioration map improved accuracy and reliability on deterioration range using 3D digital restoration and high resolution photograph mapping technique. Also, quantitative deterioration evaluation of stone cultural heritage was carried out developing the crack index, and the 3D deterioration rate of a break-out part was calculated by virtual restoration modeling. As a quantitative deterioration evaluation of Magoksa Temple stone pagoda based on the results described above, the north face showed high deterioration rate of bursting crack (1.70), hair crack (1.34), scaling (20.2%) and break out (13.0%), and the 3D deterioration rate of first roof stone was 6.7%.
The results of the inspection of the vase condition for April 29th, 2008 have stated the mineral-petrographic characteristic of the material, the character of the stone mechanical defects; its impurity and biological faults have been described; the results of ultrasonic sounding of the stone have been shown. Possible reasons and process of destruction of the stone vase have been analysed on January, 6 to 12th, 2008. Recommendations on restoration and preservation of the vase have been given.
The effect of seawater and air pollutants on the three-story stone pagodas on Gameunsa Temple Site have been studied in order to establish conservation basic plan. Also, an experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effect of seawater salt and air pollutants on the weathering of granite. The results could be summarized as follows. Because the three-story stone pagodas on Gameunsa Temple Site are located outdoors, the external appearance has been largely deteriorated due to natural and artificial factors such as typhoon, wind, microorganisms, moisture, extreme change in temperature, air pollutants, and seawater, etc. When G.J fresh granite was dipped into the seawater, dissolution rate of three minerals (Mg, Ca, and K) are increased linearly until about 40 days and then increased abruptly. After seawater dipping experiments, the mineral compositions of the granite surface were lower then that of the G.J fresh granite but Poisson's ratio and absorption ratio were slightly increased. Therefore, from these results we can say that stone cultural properties could be weathered by seawater and air pollutants and it's considered being a meaningful experiment to study the conservation method of stone cultural properties from seawater.
A stone cultural heritage often lacks design drawing and detailed geometric informations, thus it becomes more difficult to conservation and restoration. Even though there is active database of detail shape information and numerical measurement for stone monuments, most of the data is in hard-to-utilize two-dimensional images. The new technology developed to overcome this problem is three-dimensional image scanning system. The multi-storied stone pagoda of the Daewonsa temple was analysed with 3D scanning image data then survey map with orientation displacement was evaluated. The difference of each side became apparent with the members of the stone properties was measured, also horizontal and vertical displacement occurred. Horizontal displacement occurred in increasing severity from left to right and from body section to upper part. The 8th roof stones are leaning toward northwest direction due to lateral displacement. The evaluation and measurement of displacement could cause a little errors due to the characteristics uneven surface of stone monuments, computer program and mistakes from the researcher. In future, more precise measurement and stability studies should be done to suggest that accurate data for conservation and understanding of damage condition can be provided.
The West Stone Pagoda at Gameunsaji Temple Site constructed in the 7th century is mainly composed of dark grey dacitic tuff bearing small numerous dioritic xenoliths. These xenoliths resulted in small holes due to differential weathering process from the host rocks. Physical strength of the pagoda was decreased due to weathering and damage caused by petrological, biological and coastal environmental factors. The southeastern part of the pagoda was extremely deteriorated that the rock surface showed exfoliation, fracture, open cavity, granular decomposition of minerals and salt crystallization by seawater spray from the eastern coast. The stone blocks were intersected by numerous cracks and contaminated by subsequent material such as cement mortar and iron plates. Also, the pagoda was colonized by algae, fungi, lichen and bryophytes on the roof rock surface and the gaps between the blocks. As a result of ultrasonic test, the rock materials fell under Highly Weathered Grade (HW) or Completely Weathered Grade (CW). Thus, conservational intervention is essentially required to prevent further weakening of the rock materials.
Disassembly and restoration work of Janghang-ri Stone Standing Buddha in the outdoor exhibition hall of Gyeongju National Museum were conducted for safe management of the collection due to problems like weathering of bonding materials by the outer environment, fixation of pollutants on the surface, and cracks by unidirectional load of rocks. A drawing was made through three-dimensional precise actual measurement, basic material research was conducted, and cement mortar and resin of the weathered part were removed. The restored part was bonded and restored by new stones using the same kind of rock. In addition, in order to prevent damages from microorganisms, fumigation treatment was made. It is under continuous observation.

The stone artifacts in Bronze age from the Hyocheon sites in the Gwangju, Korea were studied on the basis of material characteristics and provenance presumptions. The use and rock names of the artifacts are a stone shovel by andesite, the stone grinding pestle by pyrophyllite, the stone sickle by schist and four stone semifinished artifacts by slates. Andesitic stone shovel could be observed easily around the Hyocheon relic site. But, rocks of the stone grinding pestle, the stone sickle, the stone arrowhead and the stone semifinished artifacts could be confirmed typical occurrences of the all kinds of rocks around the Hwasun coal mine area above 10km from the site. These are made the coupled samples with each stone artifact to the same kinds of raw material rocks based on analysis of the lithology and geochemistry. As a result a geochemical evolution trends of both a stone artifact and the rock showed very similar patterns based on normalization using the behavior, enrichment, compatibility and incompatibility of the elements. Therefore, the source rock of the stone shovel was convey from Mudeung mountain possible interpreted that the domestic-type artifacts are distributed in the vicinity of the Hyocheon site. On the other hand, the stone grinding pestle, the stone sickle, the stone arrowhead and the stone semifinished artifacts were convey from the Hwasun coal mine area possible foreign-type stone artifacts interpreted that the source rocks. Consequently, in the foreign-type stone artifacts are should archaeologic research which it can examine various possibilities clearly that the possibility to coming the introduction with the mankind migration, diffusion to dealings of tribe, the captured enemy equipment through the war and the trade with the behavior of the materials.
Physicochemical properties of HBA epoxy resins were controlled by varying hardener mixture and reactive diluent to improve applicability for stone conservation. The epoxy risen comprises hydrogenated Bisphenol-A based epoxide (HBA), fast curing agent (FH), slow curing agent poly(propyleneglycol)bis(2- aminopropylether) (SH) and difunctional polyglycidyl epoxide (DPE). Talc was used as an inorganic additive. The changes in viscosity and temperature during curing reactions depending on the composition of the epoxy resins were investigated. Additionally, bending, tensile and adhesive strengths were measured to identify the effective mechanical strength in stone conservation. Finally various compositions of epoxy resin/inorganic additives were developed for stone conservation by controlling cure kinetics and mechanical properties.
