  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effect of Korean medicine (KM) treatment for Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP). Methods: Five HSP patients who demonstrated a Yin deficiency and who had a history of a previous upper respiratory tract infection were included in this study. Four patients had arthritis and three had severe stomachache. One of them appeared to have proteinuria and hematuria before starting KM treatment. Results: All patients were improved with only herbal medicine, Jarotang (JRT). Purpura in the lower extremities and abdominal pain, which were not treated by using a corticosteroid, disappeared and had not recurred after 6 months. Conclusion: These cases indicate that JRT may be effective in treating HSP in patients who demonstrate Yin deficiency, even though the number of cases was limited to five.

  • A general review is made on Insamyangwi-tang(인삼양위탕). Following conclusions are drawn from the clinical cases of Insamyangwi-tang in Hyungsang medicine. Insamyangwi-tang is composed of four different prescriptions of Huisaeng-san, Sakoonja-tang, Eajin-tang and Pyungwi-san. Huisaeng-tang is usually prescribed for the intestinal convulsion. Sakoonja-tang for the deficiency of Ki. Eajintang for retention of phlegm, Insamyangwi-tang is effective in strengthening the spleen, drying the dampness, warming the middle-warmer to stop vomiting, regulating the flow of Ki, and eliminating phlegm. Insamyangwi-tang is applicable to malaria caused by cold, intestinal convulsion, abdominal mass, edema, tympanites, Yin syndrome of exogenous febrile disease, distension, lack of appetite, stomachache, and diarrhea. Persons with the following characteristic in Hyungsang are more susceptible to Insamyangwi-tang ; Jung type, Hyul type, fish type, Taium meridian type, white fat damp constitution, person with big mouth, and woman rather than man.

  • It has long teen known in herbal medicine that the mugwort not only exerts a strong hemostatic and parasiticidal actions but also has therapeutic effects for stomachache and diarrhea. In recent pharmaceutical botany the mugwort is known to have antipyretic and astringent actions also. Among the major principles which have been found in the leaves and stems of mugwort are inulin, alkaloids, vitamines, and esestial oil. It is well known that santonin, one of the well known parasiticides, is one of the glucosides extracted from the limited species of mugwort. The present study was undertaken to investigate effects of mugwort(Artemisia asiatica Nakai) on the motility of isolated rabbit duodenum. The results obtained are as follows: At does of 0.2%, 0.5% and 1. 0% AAJ(Artemisia asiatica juice) markedly enhanced contractility of isolated duodenum and tonus of the intestine was also augmented with doses of 0.5% and 1.0%. The augmentative effect of AAJ on intestinal motility was not affected by pretreatment with epinephrine and avil while it was completely abolished by atropine. Therefore it is strongly suggested that augmentative action of AAJ on duodenal motility was exerted solely through muscarinic cholinergic receptors.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between adolescents' suicidal ideation and their physical health conditions to contribute to lower suicide rates among adolescents. Methods: Secondary analysis of 2108 high school students of $10^{th}$ grade was conducted using the Korean Child and Youth Panel survey in 2013. The association between suicidal ideation and socio-demographic and health characteristics were analyzed using Chi-square tests and regression models. Results: Adolescents' physical health conditions were significantly related to suicidal ideation. In particular, rhinitis and various symptoms such as feeling feverish, low appetite, feeling of nausea, stomachache while studying, and sleeping problem showed statistically significant relationships with suicidal ideation (P < .05). Furthermore, the higher frequency of diseases and body symptoms increases the rate of suicidal ideation. Considering socio-economic characteristics, family structure was also important. Conclusions: Physical health condition is a major contributor to adolescent's suicidal ideation. results suggest that improving social support system for adolescents' physical health conditions across family and school may be important in suicide prevention efforts.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop the Korean Somatization Scale for Children (KSS-C) and to evaluate the reliability and validity of this scale. Methods: Sixty-five children and adolescents with somatic symptoms were evaluated the KSS-C, Child Version, the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC). 65 parents of the subjects evaluated the KSS-C, Parent Version and Korean version of the Child Behavior Checklist (K-CBCL). Psychometric properties and associations with the internalizing symptoms were. Results: Three factors were extracted by factor analysis. KSS-C was significantly correlated with the CDI, the STAIC, and the internalization, externalization and somatization scale of the K-CBCL. The KSS-C, Parent Version was significantly correlated with the KSS-C, Child Version. Frequently reported somatic symptoms in children were fatigue, headache, low energy, stomachache, and nausea. Conclusion: Both KSS-C, Child Version and KSS-P, Parent Version were valid and reliable instrument assess somatic symptoms in Korean children and adolescents.

  • The purpose of this thesis was to understand the various kinds of Korean liquors. To do this, about fifty different kinds of liquors and wines presented in Yi-dynasty literatures were reviewed and classified into several categories. The findings of the study are as follows, 1, Liquors of Yi-dynasty can be classified into three groups; Chungju or Takju which is brewed from rice or glutinous rice, Jeungryuju(Soju) which is made by distillation of Chungju or Takju, and Hwahyangju that is made by addition of fruits, fragrance, or medicinal plants in Chungju, 2. The basic method of making these liquors is in general to make yeast first and fix a liquor base by mixing rice or glutinous rice and yeast, and then add more rice or glutinous rice into the liquor base, and finally ferment the mixture for certain periods. On fixing a liquor base, several methods of rice preparations were used; these were white rice cake, rice paste, boiled dough of rice powder, and steamed rice. 3. Duration of fermentation was in general one to three weeks. However, the shorter one was completed within 3 days and the longer one required even one year or more. 4. Of Hwahyangju the ones with medicinal plants can be divided into several groups according to their medical effects; wines for mental and emotional stability, making blood and active circulation, increase in body stamina, promoting health and living long-life, treatment of stomachache and bruise, and enhancement of the functions of body organs, especially eyes ana ears.5. These liquors and wines above were brewed for daily use or special occasions (Sesiju).

  • The rhizoma of Zingiber officinale has been used as antiemetic, expectorants, stomachache relieving drugs and digestive accelerators. From the observation of antigastritic action of the methanol extract of the rhizoma, it was fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol, followed by bioassay on antigastritic and antiulcerative activity. The hexane and the chloroform fraction reduced significantly HCl ethanol induced gastric lesion at the dose of 370 and 210 mg/kg, p.o., respectively. On the gastric ulceration and gastric secretion in pylorus-ligated rats, the hexane fraction decreased the volume of gastric secretion and acid output, and also increased pH at the dose of 370 mg/kg, i.d.. It showed considerable curative ratio of acetic acid induced ulcer without inhibition of indomethacin induced gastric lesion. The methanol extract showed low acute toxicity with minimum lethal dose of more than 3000 mg/kg, p.o. in mice. In conclusion, Zingiberis rhizoma exhibited antigastric and antiulcerative activity which might be attributable to inhibition of gastric secretion. It is revealed that the active component may be present in the hexane fraction.
