  • This study was carried out to investigate the growth and branching pattern of stolons at Korean lawn(Zoysia japonica Steud.) in the field condition. The results were summarized as follows ; 1.About 80% of observed lawns had one primary stolon. Among the lawns with several primary stolons, 30% of them had two primary stolons, 63% had three, and 7% had four. 2.The angles between the primary stolon and the shoot were increased from 0˚ to 52˚ according to the node order from the terminal shoot apex, and reached maximum angle at the 7th node. 3.The internode length was the longest in the middle position of stolon, and its growing rate which depends on months was increased from May to September. 4.The branching angles between primary and secondary stolon were from 44˚ to 53˚ in each node. The average left branching angle was about 48.20, right branching angle 47.8˚, and the total average branching angle was 48.00. 5.The rate of initial brabch was the highest at the 10th node in May, the 7th node in July and the 5th node in September. But, the initial branching rate at the 7th node in July was higher than any other that at the 10th node in May and the 5th node in September. 6.The distribution rate of secondary stolon in each node of primary stolon was the highest at the 7th node. 7.when the terminal shoot apex of primary stolon was damaged mechanically, the branching rate at the first node after the damaged region was highly increased to 62%. The results of this study may be suggested that the secondary stolon begins to branch with the angle of 480 from the 7th node of the normal primary stolon, and those may be used as a basic data for the branching simulation in lawn.

  • A natural, tidal-flat clone of Zoysia sinica was studied to compare ramet growth properties in central area with in peripheral area. In new stolon and rhizome, internode length, weight, shoot height and weight, and spike production were monitored on July 25, 2004. The weight/height rate of shoot between stolon and rhizome, the shoot/stolon (or rhizome) rate in weight between central and peripheral area were not different. However, other properties differed in stolon from rhizome or between central and peripheral area significantly differed: 1. The rhizome in central area had a larger node number, shorter internode length, higher shoot height, larger shoot biomass, and higher rate of non-shoot nodes than that in peripheral area. 2. The stolon in central area had a smaller node number, shorter internode length, and smaller biomass than that in peripheral area. 3. In the same area, the rhizome had a larger node number (except for central area), shorter internode, higher shoot height, larger shoot biomass, higher rate of non-shoot node, and higher rate of node having over two shoots than the stolon. No relationship could be found between shoot size and spike production in shoot on vertical rhizome (lower node of old shoot).

  • Grass breeding starts with the process of selecting grass with good traits, and this operation consumes a lot of resources. Therefore, there is a need for an efficient screening method. Stolon is a unit for the storage of carbohydrates and vegetative propagation, which enhances grass growth and grass sod. Grass varieties with active production of stolons have excellent traits because they reproduce quickly and have a high density. To select grass with such a trait, the survival rate and the production rate of stolon after transplantation of 72 grass germplasms were investigated. After transplantation, the survival rate ranged from 75% to 100%. The majority of the grass cultivars showed a 100% survival rate. Therefore, the group was divided into two groups: A grass variety showing 100% survival and a grass variety that did not show 100% survival. The grass cultivar group, which showed a 100% survival rate after transplantation, included 61 turf varieties, and the rates of stolon production in these grass varieties ranged from 0 to 100%. In contrast, 10 varieties were included in the grass cultivar group that did not show 100% survival after transplantation. These cultivars had a stolon production rate of 0 to 33%. The results suggest that grass germplasms with a 100% survival rate should be selected.

  • The increasing emphasis placed on the production of fine turf for lawns, golf courses, parks, and other recreational sites has led to many unsolved problems as to how such turf could be best established and mainteined. For this purpose, a series of experiments were conducted under con ditions of pot and field. The results obtained were as follows EXPERIMENT I. The effect of nitrogen fertilizer and clipping interval on Zoysia japonica. 1. Increasing the rate of nitrogen and frequent clipping increased tiller number of Zoysis japonica and the maximum number of tillers were obtained from 700 kg N application and freqnent clippings (10 days interval ) in October. Treatment of 350kg N with 10 days clipping interval increased tillers much more than those of 700 kgN with 20 and 30 days clipping intervals. 2. The average number of green leaves occurred during the growth period maximized by applying 700 kg N and clipping 10 days interval. 3. Increasing tiller numbers significantly decreased tops DM weight per tiller by clipping plants at interval of 10 and 20 days, irrespective of nitrogen applied, and with nil N, at the interval of 30 days. By applying 700 kg N, however, top DM weight per tiller increased as the number of tillers increased consistently. 4. The highest top DM weight was achieved from late August to early September by applying 350 and 700kgN. 5. During the growth period, differences in unders ( stolon + root ) DM weight occurred bynitrogen application were found between nil N and two applied nitrogen levels, whereas, at the same level of nitrogen applied, the increase in stolon DM weight enhanced by lengthening the clipping interval to 30 days. 6. Nitrogen efficiency to green leaves, stolon nodes and DM weight of root with high nitrogen was achieved as clipping interval was shortened. 7. By increasing fertilizer nitrogen rate applied, N content n the leaves and stems of Zoysiajaponica was increased. On the other hand, N content in root and stolon had little effect onfertilizer nitrogen, resulting in the lowest content among plant fractions. The largest content of N was recorded in leaves. Lengthening the clipping interval from 10 or 20 to 30 days tends to decrease the N content in the leaves and stems, whereas this trend did not appeared in stolon androot. 8. A positive correlations between N and K contents in tops and stolon were established andthus K content increased as N content in tops and stolon increased. Meanwhile, P content was not affected by N and clipping treatments. 9. Total soluble carbohydrate content in Zoysia japonica was largest in stolon and stem, and was reduced by increasing fertilizer nitrogen rate. Reduction in total soluble carbohydrate due to increased nitrogen rate was severer in the stolons and stems than in the leaves. 10. Increasing the rate of nitrogen applied increased the number of small and large vascular bundles in leaf blade, but shortened distance among the large vascular bundles. Shortening the clipping interval resulted in increase of the number of large vascular bundles but decrease ofdistance between large vascular bundles.EXPERIMENT II. Growth response of Zoysia japonica imposed by different plant densities. 1. Tiller numbers per unit area increased as plant density heightened. Differences in num ber between densities at higher densities than 120 D were of no significance. 2. Tiller numbers per clone attained by 110 days after transplanting were 126 at 40D,77 at 80D, 67 at 120D, 54 at 160D, and 41 at 200D. A decreasing trend of tiller numbers per clone with increasing density was noticable from 100 days after transplanting onwards. 3. During the growth period, the greatest number of green leaves per unit area were attainedin 90days after transplanting at 160D and 200D, and 100 days after transplanting at 40D, 80Dand 120D. Thus the period to reach the maximum green leaf number with the high plantdensity was likely to be earlier that with the low plant density. 4. Stolon growth up to 80 days after transplaning was relatively slow, but from 80 daysonwards, the growth quickened to range from 1.9 m/clone at 40D to 0.6m/clone at 200Din 200 days after transplanting, these followed by the stolon node produced. 5. Plant density did not affect stolon weight/clone and root weight/clone until 80 daysafter transplanting. 6. DM weight of root was heavier in the early period of growth than that of stolon, butthis trend was reversed in the late period of growth : DM weight of stolon was much higherthan that of root.EXPERIMENT Ill. Vegetative growth of Zoysia japonica and Zoysia matrella as affected by nitrogen and clipping height. 1. When no nitrogen was applied to Zoysia japonica, leaf blade which appeared during theAugust-early September period remained green for a perid of about 10 weeks and even leavesemerged in rate September lived for 42 days. However, leaf longevity did not exceed 8 weeks asnitrogen was applied. In contrast the leaf longevity of Zoysia matrella which emerged during the mid August-earlySeptember period was 11 weeks and, under the nitrogen applied, 9 weeks, indicating that thelife-spen of individual leaf of Zoysia matrella may be longer than that of Zoysia japorica. Clipping height had no effect on the leaf longevity in both grasses. 2. During the July-August period, tiller number, green leaf number and DM weightof Zoysia japonica were increased significantly with fertilizer nitrogen, but were not with twolevel of clipping height. This trend was reversed after late September ; no effect of nitrogen wasappeared. Instead, lax clipping increased tiller number, green leaf number and DM weight. Greenleaves stimulated by lax clipping resulted in the occurrance of more dead leaves in late October. 3. Among the stolons outgrown until early September, the primary stolon was not influencedby nitrogen and clipping treatments to produce only 2-3 stolons. However, 1st branch stoIon asaffected by nitrogen increased significantly, so most of stolons which occurred consisted of 1st branch stolons. 4. Until early September, stolon length obtained at nil nitrogen level was chiefly caused bythe primary stolons. By applying nitrogen, the primary stolons of Zoysia japonica waslonger than 1st branch stolons when severe clipping was involved and in turn, shorter than 1stbranch stolons when lax clipping was concerned. In Zoysia matrella, 1st branch stolons were muchlonger than the primary stolon when turf was clipped severely but in conditions of lax clippingthere was little difference in length between primary and 1st branch stolons. 5. Stolon nodes of both Zoysia japonica and Z. matrella were positively influenced by nit rogen, but no particular increase by imposing clipping height treatment was marked in Zoysiamatrella. Although the stolon of Zoysia japonica grew until late October, the growthstimulated by nitrogen was not so remarkable as to exceed that by nil N.

  • Several benefits provided by white clover (Tnifoliurn repens L.) can be elevated as relationship between its morphological and physiological characteristics is clarified. The experiment was done to analyze the relationship between them in the clover with different leaf size. Individual plants of Osceola (large leaf), Grasslands Huia (medium leaf) and Aberystwyth S184 (small leaf) were grown in 15m plastic pot containing a 1:2:1 soil:sand:Promix mixture for 55 days, and then clipped to remove all fully expanded leaves every 7, 14 or 28 days. To measure the cultivar response, plants were sampled for morphological and physiological parameters on the date (0) after final harvest and 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days after the final harvest and then their relationship was analyzed. Osceola had greater leaf area per trifoliolate but less no. of leaves per plant to result in similar total leaf area per plant of all cltivars. Stolon length and no. of growing tips per plant declined with smaller leaf size although the result in biomass was reverse. Stolon of all cultivars showed the greatest fluctuation in total nonstructud carbohydrate during the regrowing period but nitrogen concentrations of all their fractions and dinitrogen fixation did similar patterns. Stolon and root of Osceola, moreover, were the highest ones. Biomass, stolon length and total leaf area per plant of all cultivars were positively correlated to carbohydrate concentration of all frauions and dinitrogen fixation. In Osceola relationship between nitrogen concentration of stolon and the characters showed in Osceola was positively done.

  • Tiller numbers per Unit area were increased as plant density heightened followed by little difference in tiller number in 110 days after transplanting(ll0DAT), this being caused by the immediate increment of tiller since' 90DAT During the growth period, the greatest number of green leaves per unit area was attained in 90DAT of both 160-density and 200-density plots, and in l00DAT of 40-, 80-, and I 20-density plots. Thus, the period to reach the maximum green leaf number with the high plant density was earlier than with the' low plant density. The increment of plant density increased the DM weight of ahoveground part and, with 40-densitytreatment. DNI weight was increased 6.1 times as much up to 110DAT as up to 7ODAT but 2 to 2.9 times with other ehe'nsity treatments. The' rate of increase in stolon length was greatest at the period between 80 and 90DAT when DM weight of stolon showed a large increment. Meanwhile, the average number of stolon was 1.7 at 70DAT but was increased up to 10 at 110DAT probably due to accelerative appeance of Ist stolon branch since 8.0DAT. DM weight of stolon was found to exceeded that of root after 90DAT Thus it was concluded that, when turfs is estahlished from sprig. it may be desirable for first mowing practice to be made at least within l00 days after planting.

  • This study was investigated to elucidate the growth characteristics and the contents of glycyrrhizin and free sugars of Glycyrrhiza plants, i. e. G. glabra var. glandulifera, G. uralensis, and G. pallidiflora. The growth of G. glabra var. glandulifera and G. pallidiflora was better in plots planted with stolon and stem over 2cm in diameter compared to that of below 1cm and $1{\sim}2cm$. G. glabra var. glandulifera didn't bloom in Suwon but produced stolon, while G. pallidiflora bloomed but did not produce stolon. Total root weight of six-year-old G. glabra var. glandulifera consisted of stolon (73.2%) and primary root (26. 8 %). The contents of glycyrrhizin and free sugars were highest in stolon, followed by tap root and leaf. The glycyrrhizin contents in Glycyrrhiza plants were 7.38% in G. glabra var. glandulifera, 5.29% in G. uralensis and 0. 15% in G. pallidiflora.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics of warm-season turfgrasses and to find out suitable turfgrass species on Saemangeum reclaimed land. Twenty native zoysiagrass(Zoysia sinica, Z. matrella, Z. japonica, Medium-leaf type zoysiagrass(hybrid zoysiagrass)) and bermudagrass(Cynodon dactylon) collected from Korea were used in this study. Total stolon length and the number of stolon per square meter, relative growth rate of shoot and stolon, and coverage rate were analyzed for 2 year. C. dactylon showed not only the most growth response with high relative growth rate of shoot and stolon, which were 19.9% and 66.3%, but also resulted in higher level of turf visual quality compared to others. Whereas Z. japonica showed the least growth response with low relative growth rate of shoot and stolon, which were 2.4% and 0.7%. Although all warm-season turfgrasses took root and grew up well, there were different growth rates between the interspecies. Z. sinica 'Z2034', Z. matrella 'Z4091', Z. japonica 'Z1064', Medium-leaf type zoysiagrass 'ZN6019' and C. dactylon 'BN7014' were the greatest growth rate of shoot and stolon. These results will be useful for selecting salt tolerant breeding lines and also used to develop a turfgrass cultivar with strong salinity tolerance through continuous monitoring.

  • This study was carried out to induce and maintain callus from 59 zoysiagrass lines, to know the effective disinfestation method for zoysiagrass stolon as explant and the difference in the response of callus induction among 59 lines, and to investigate the effect of medium, growth regulators, light, temperature, stolon part and internode position on callus induction and emhryogenic callus(E.C.) formation. The treatment of 0.lmg/L $HgCl_2$for 15 min resulted in no contamination and the highest callus induction(46.6%). Callus was induced from the 59 zoysiagrass lines. The callus growth of Z. japonica and Z. sinica was generally better than Z. matrella Ten cell lines whose callus and stolon grow fast in culture and in field, respectively were selected to he used for breeding. Callus induction was the most effective at 2.0mg /L of both 2, 4-D and picloram in MS medium. MS medium was the best for callus induction and growth while LS medium was the best for embryogenic callus and shoot formation. Callus induction and growth was better at 28, 31$^{\circ}C$. than 25$^{\circ}C$. and dark condition was better than light condition in MS me-dium containing 2mg/L 2,4-D. While callus induction was better with node part as explant than with internode part, callus growth and embryogenic callus formation was better with internode part. In 'Japonica 1', the first internode was the most effective in callus induction, but third internode was the best in '$M_2$ X $S_2$'.

  • Growth differences in Caulerpa okamurae thallus parts and the effects of apex removal on growth were examined. Erect fronds, stolons, and erect fronds with stolons (erect+stolon) were grown for 14 days, whereas erect fronds without and with apex removal (-A and +A fronds, respectively), were grown for 25 days. The relative growth rates (RGR) of C. okamurae thallus parts ranged from 1.91% to 4.93% day-1 with maximal and minimal RGR for the stolon and erect+stolon treatments, respectively. Over the 25 days in culture, the -A fronds showed a higher RGR (2.48% day-1) than the +A fronds (1.96% day-1). More new erect fronds and stolons were produced by -A fronds than those by +A fronds. In addition, basal cutting of erect C. okamurae fronds resulted in a greater plant length increase than that obtained from top cutting. These findings indicate that vegetative growth is common in C. okamurae, which has excellent wound healing ability, and cutting damage to erect fronds may stimulate enhanced vegetative growth. Thus, we suggest that stolons and erect fronds of C. okamurae could be used as seeding materials for large scale cultivation. Furthermore, this edible species could be a potential seaweed resource for rapid skin regeneration cosmetics.
