  • The bow wave breaking and the viscous interaction of stern wave are studied by simulating the free-surface flows. The Navier-Stokes equation is solved by a finite difference method in which the body-fitted coordinate system, the wall function and the triple-grid system are invoked. After validation, the calculations are extended to turbulent flows. The wave elevation at the Reynolds number of $10^4$ is much less than that at $10^6$ although the Froude number is the same. The numerical appearance of the sub-breaking waves is qualitatively supported by experimental observation. They are also applied to study the stern flow of S-103 for which extensive experimental data are available. Although the interaction between separation and the stern wave generation are not yet clear, the effects of the bow wave on the development of the boundary layer flows are concluded to be significant.

  • In this paper, generation mechanisms of ocean freak waves are briefly introduced in the context of wave-current interaction phenomena. As an accurate and efficient numerical tool, the spectral element method is presented with general features and specific treatment for the wave-current interaction problem. The present model of the fluid motion is based on the Navier-Stokes equations incorporating a velocity-pressure formulation. In order to deal with the free surface motion, an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) description is adopted. As an intermediate stage of development, solution procedure and characteristic aspects of the present modeling and numerical method features are addressed in detail, and numerical results for wave-current interaction is left as further study.

  • In this paper we study numerically the shock-vortex interaction in the shear layer generated by moving shock waves above and below a flat plate. The faster normal shock is diffracted at the tip of the flat plate, producing a starting vortex. The slower normal shock below the flat plate arrives soon later to run across the vortex and make interaction. The two shocks are merged together and reflected back at the closed end of the shock tube to impinge on the shear layer developing multiple vortexlets. The computational simulation based on Euler and Navier-Stokes equations shows good prediction.

  • The full incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are numerically integrated to solve the unsteady channel flow using a new numerical scheme of second-order accuracy developed by the authors. It is well known that in spite of the symmetry in the boundary condition and geometry, asymmetry can develop with time-dependency in a channel with sudden expansion. The instability of the shear flow and the cross-channel pressure contribute to such asymmetric flow. In this paper, we successfully generated a channel flow in which vortex waves were propagated downstream due to the harmonically oscillating inlet flow. The structure of the eddies and wall vorticity are parametrically investigated.

  • This study presents numerical solutions of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for supersonic unsteady flow in a convergent-divergent nozzle with heat addition. The TVD scheme in generalized coordinates is employed in order to calculate the moving shock waves caused by thermal choking. We discuss on transient characteristics, start and unstart phenomena, fluctuations of specific thrust caused by thermal choking and viscous effects. We prove that the control of separation of boundary layer is the most important key problem to prevent the thermal choking.

  • Shock wave boundary layer interactions can make flows around a vehicle be very high pressure and temperature due to pass shock waves in small areas of the hypersonic vehicle. These phenomena can affect a critical problem in the design of hypersonic vehicles. To research the effect of shock wave boundary layer interactions, comer flows were studied in this paper using numerical studies with the NSMB (Navier-Stokes Multi Block) solver and then comparing corresponding numerical results with experimental data of the Huston High Speed Flow Field Workshop II. The mach number of flows is 12.3 in comer flows. The comparison with the computational result is presented based on diverse numerical schemes. Good agreement is obtained.

  • When supersonic flow is through an internal duct, there forms a flow structure called pseudo-shock. Pseudo-shock is a result of shockwave-boundary layer interaction(SBLI) and to simulate pseudo-shock correctly, one needs to correctly anticipate not only the strength of the shock but also the boundary layer behavior as well. In this study, pseud-shockwave structure at a rectangular duct will be numerically simulated using dedicated inlet boundary conditions to obtain accurate solution in terms of its structure and pressure rise pattern.

  • In thus paper we validate a numerical model for wave-structure interaction by comparing numerical results with laboratory data. The numerical model is based on the Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations for an incompressible fluid. The N-S equations are solved by a two-step projection finite volume scheme and the free surface displacements are tracked by the volume of fluid (VOF) method The numerical model is used to simulate solitary waves and their interaction with a group of slender vertical piles. Numerical results are compared with the laboratory data and very good agreement is observed for the time history of free surface displacement, fluid particle velocity and wave force. The agreement for dynamic pressure on the cylinder is less satisfactory, which is primarily caused by instrument errors.
