  • The increasing of wind power penetration level presents challenges in classical optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) which is usually formulated as a deterministic optimization problem. This paper proposes a two-stage stochastic programming model for ORPD by considering the uncertainties of wind speed and load in a specified time interval. To avoid the excessive operation, the schedule of compensators will be determined in the first-stage while accounting for the costs of adjusting the compensators (CACs). Under uncertainty effects, on-load tap changer (OLTC) and generator in the second-stage will compensate the mismatch caused by the first-stage decision. The objective of the proposed model is to minimize the sum of CACs and the expected energy loss. The stochastic behavior is formulated by three-point estimate method (TPEM) to convert the stochastic programming into equivalent deterministic problem. A hybrid Genetic Algorithm-Interior Point Method is utilized to solve this large-scale mixed-integer nonlinear stochastic problem. Two case studies on IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 118-bus system are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Increasing traffic and bandwidth requirements bring challenges to the next generation wireless networks (5G). As one of the main technology in 5G networks, Ultra-Dense Network (UDN) can be used to improve network coverage. In this paper, a radio over fiber based model is proposed to solve the load balancing problem in ultra-dense network. Stochastic differential game is introduced for the load balancing algorithm, and optimal load allocated to each access point (RAP) are formulated as Nash Equilibrium. It is proved that the optimal load can be achieved and the stochastic differential game based scheme is applicable and acceptable. Numerical results are given to prove the effectiveness of the optimal algorithm.

  • Stochastic molecular dynamics simulation is a variation of standard molecular dynamics simulation that basically omits water molecules. The omission of water molecules, occupying a majority of space, enables flow simulation at microscale. This study reports our stochastic molecular dynamics simulation of particles diffusing in rectangular microchannels. We interestingly found that diffusion patterns in channels with a very small aspect ratio differ by dimensions. We will also discuss the future direction of our research toward a more realistic simulation of micromixing.

  • The purpose of the synthetic generation of monthly river flows based on the short term observed data by means of stochastic models is to provide abundant input data to the water resources systems of which the system performance and operation policy are to be determined beforehand. In this study, a multivariate autoregressive model has been applied to generate monthly flows of the multi sites considering the correlations between each site. The model performance was examined using statistical comparisons between the historical and generated monthly series such as mean, variance, skewness and correlation coefficients. The results of this study showed that the modeled generated flows were statistically similar to the historical flows.

  • In this study a stochastic rainfall generation model is used to analyze the structural variability of rainfall events since it has limitations in the traditional approach of measuring rainfall variability according to different durations. The NSRPM(Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulse Model) is a stochastic rainfall generation model using a point process with 5 model parameters which is widely used in hydrologic fields. The five model parameters have physical meaning associated with rainfall events. The model parameters were estimated using hourly rainfall data from 1973 to 2011 at Seoul stations. The variability of model parameter estimates was analyzed and compared with results of traditional analysis.
