The aim of the current study is to develop a nonlinear isoparametric layered frame finite element (FE) analysis of FRP strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beam or column members by a force-based FE formulation. In sections, concrete is modeled in the triaxial stress-strain relationship state and the FRP sheet is modeled as layered composite materials in two-dimension. The element stiffness matrix derived by the force-based FE has the force-interpolation functions without assuming the displacement shape functions. A lateral load test of RC column strengthened by GFRP sheets was analyzed by the developed force-based FE model. From comparative studies of the experimental and analysis results, it was shown to compare with the stiffness FE method that the force-based FE analysis could give more accurate predictions in the overall lateral load-deflection response as well as in nonlinear deformations and damages in the column plastic hinge region.
A framed structure may be composed of two sub-structures, which are linked by a hinged joint. One sub-structure is the primary system and the other is the secondary system. The primary system, which is subjected to the periodic external load, can give rise to an auto-parametric resonance of the second system. Considering the geometric-stiffness effect produced by the axially internal force, the element equation of motion is derived by the extended Hamilton's principle. The element equations are then assembled into the global non-homogeneous Mathieu-Hill equations. The Newmark's method is introduced to solve the time-history responses of the non-homogeneous Mathieu-Hill equations. The energy-growth exponent/coefficient (EGE/EGC) and a finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FLE) are proposed for determining the auto-parametric instability boundaries of the structural system. The auto-parametric instabilities are numerically analyzed for the two frames. The influence of relative stiffness between the primary and secondary systems on the auto-parametric instability boundaries is investigated. A phenomenon of the "auto-parametric internal resonance" (the auto-parametric resonance of the second system induced by a normal resonance of the primary system) is predicted through the two numerical examples. The risk of auto-parametric internal resonance is emphasized. An auto-parametric resonance experiment of a ${\Gamma}$-shaped frame is conducted for verifying the theoretical predictions and present calculation method.
This paper presented an integral design procedure for demountable bolted composite frames with semi-rigid joints. Moment-rotation relationships of beam-to-column joints were predicted with analytical models aiming to provide accurate and reliable analytical solutions. Among this, initial stiffness of beam-to-column joints was derived on the basis of Timoshenko's plate theory, and moment capacity was derived in accordance with Eurocodes. The predictions were validated with relevant test results prior to further applications. Frame analysis was conducted by using Abaqus software with material and geometrical nonlinearity considered. Variable lateral loads incorporating wind actions and earthquake actions in accordance with Australian Standards were adopted to evaluate the flexural behaviour of the composite frames. Strength and serviceability limit state criteria were utilized to verify configurations of designed models. A wide range of frames with the varied number of storeys and bays were thereafter programmed to ascertain bending moment envelopes under various load combinations. The analytical results suggest that the proposed approach is capable of predicting the moment-rotation performance of the semi-rigid joints reasonably well. Outcomes of the frame analysis indicate that the load combination with dead loads and live loads only leads to maximum sagging and hogging moment magnitudes in beams. As for lateral loads, wind actions are more crucial to dominate the design of the demountable composite frames than earthquake actions. No hogging moment reversal is expected in the composite beams given that the frames are designed properly. The proposed analysis procedure is demonstrated to be a simple and efficient method, which can be applied into engineering practice.

Performance evaluation of RC bridge piers repaired by CFRP has been investigated. For this purpose, simplified CFRP stress-strain relationship has been proposed and use is made of inelastic time-dependent element developed by authors. Static time-history analysis has been carried out for a RC bridge pier repaired with CFRP. Analytical predictions shows a relatively good correlation with experimental results. In addition, in case of dynamic time-history analysis, effect of the CFRP repair intervention on shear has been evaluated. Comparative analysis reveals that a repaired member produces increased characteristics due to the repair intervention and may affect the overall response of a whole structure. Moreover, effect of shear significantly affect strength, stiffness and displacement response of the pier. In all, It is believed that the present analytical model and scheme enable a healthy evaluation of strength, stiffness and displacement capacities of a RC bridge pier being damaged and repaired.
This study investigates the structural characteristics of oil-free, gas beam foil journal bearings (GBFJBs) for use in high speed motors. Mathematical modeling was carried out, and reaction force modeling for static load was performed to predict the structural characteristics of the GBFJB. Mathematical modeling and reaction force modeling for static load are performed to predict the structural characteristics of GBFJBs. The reaction force of the test bearing against static loads was measured during experiments and compared with the predicted results. The measured experimental data reveal the nonlinear stiffness characteristics of the GBFJB against varying displacement and agree well with the predictions. Dynamic load tests using an exciter allow to identify the vibration characteristics of the GBFJB. Test results show that the vibration displacement, dynamic force, and acceleration measured on the test bearing are most dominant at the applied dynamic load (synchronization) frequency. Futhermore, the test results show that the hysteresis area recorded during the dynamic tests increases with the excitation amplitude and frequency, and that the beam stick phenomena occurr at high excitation frequencies. The single degree of freedom (DOF) vibration model aids to identify the stiffness and damping coefficient of the GBFJB, which decrease as the excitation frequency increases.
In this study a general Galerkin FE lubrication analysis method was utilized to analyze the complex lubrication performance of a spiral groove seal having an additional inner circular groove, which was designed for a chemical process mixer operating at a low speed of the maximum 500 rpm. Equilibrium seal clearance analyses under varying outer pressure revealed that the seal maintains a certain levitation seal clearance under the outer pressure of more than about 1.5 bar, regardless of a rotating speed. Also, under the normal outer pressure of 11 bar, the axial stiffness of the seal was predicted to have a high value of more than 7.0 e + 07 N/m, regardless of a rotating speed and thereby, the seal is expected to maintain a stable thickness of lubrication film under a certain external excitation acting. A seal levitation test rig was designed and constructed. Experimental results at 500 rpm agreed well with analytical predictions and the applied lubrication analysis method was verified.

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the shape control of plates via embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. An extensive body of literature proposes the use of SMA wires to actively modify the shape or stiffness of a structure; in most cases, however, the study focuses on modeling and little experimental data is available. In this work, a simple proof of concept specimen was built by attaching four prestrained SMA wires to one side of a carbon fiber laminate plate strip. The specimen was clamped at one end and tested in an environmental chamber, measuring the tip displacement and the SMA temperature. At heating, actuation of the SMA wires bends the plate; at cooling deformation is partially recovered. The specimen was actuated a few times between two fixed temperatures $T_c$ and $T_h$, whereas in the last actuation a temperature $T_f$ > $T_h$ was reached. Contrary to most model predictions, in the first actuation the transformation temperatures are significantly higher than in the following cycles, which are stable. Moreover, if the temperature $T_h$ is exceeded, two separate actuations occur during heating: the first follows the path of the stable cycles; the second, starting at $T_h$, is similar to the first cycle. An interpretation of the phenomenon is given using some differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements. The observed behavior emphasizes the need to build a more comprehensive constitutive model able to include these effects.
A stiffness model has been proposed to predict elastic constants of twisted yam composites. The model is based upon the unit cell structure, the coordinate transformation, and the volume averaging of compliance constants for constituent materials. For the correlation of analytic results with experiments, composite samples of various yam twist angles were tested, and strength and Young's modulus under tensile, compressive, and shear loading have been obtained. The sample was fabricated by the RTM process using glass yarns and epoxy resin. The correlations of elastic constants showed relatively good agreements. The model provides the predictions of the three-dimensional engineering constants, which are valuable input data for the analytic characterization of textile composites made of twisted yam.
In this short paper, an elasto-plastic repair and retrofit element is developed for the investigation of the seismic performance of damaged reinforced concrete members. The developed element is capable of reflecting the increased characteristics due to both repair and retrofitting for degraded strength and stiffness of the members. The element having both birth and death time can freely be activated within the user-defined time intervals during static and dynamic time-history analysis. Comparative studies are conducted for reinforced concrete members being repaired and retrofitted. Analytical predictions including the developed element display reasonable correlation with experimental results. In short, it is concluded that the developed element is capable of providing salient features for the healthy assessment of seismic performance of RC members being repaired and retrofitted.

A structural-acoustic coupling problem involving fluid in a cavity divided with flexible walls and porous materials is investigated in this paper. In many practical problems, the use of finite elements to discretize the fluid region leads to large stiffness and mass matrices. But, since the acoustic boundary element discretization requires to put elements only on the surface of structure, the size of matrices is reduced considerably. Here, we developed a numerical analysis program for the structural-acoustic coupling problems of the multi-region cavity, using boundary elements for the fluid regions and finite elements for the structure. By considering sound transmission through layered systems placed in a cavity, the accuracy of the coupled acoustical-structural finite element model has been verified by comparing its transmission loss predictions with analytical sloutions. Example problems are included to investigate the characteristics of the multi-region structural-acoustic coupling system with porous material.
